Methods: Data obtained from the 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 645 postmenopausal and 663 premenopausal women were analyzed by means of a chi-square test and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. The primary factors of the investigation were metabolic syndrome and the community periodontal index (CPI). Results: The incidence of a CPI of 3 and 4 increased (p<0.001) with the prevalence of periodontal disease in the postmenopausal group (p<0.001). The incidence of periodontal disease was significantly higher (p<0.001) in postmenopausal women who did not use dental floss (2.69 times) and those with hypertension (1.60 times) and in premenopausal women with higher blood glucose levels (1.67 times). According to a multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, smoking, and alcohol consumption, significant risk factors of periodontal disease included not using dental floss (odds ratio [OR]=1.83, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.26-2.67), being in a postmenopausal state (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.22-2.41), and an increase in the number of metabolic syndrome components (1–2, OR=2.22, 95% CI=1.50-3.29; ≥ 3, OR=2.22, 95% CI=1.58-3.13). Conclusions: We identified an association between menopausal status and the prevalence of periodontal disease. Therefore, oral health programs should be considered for women older than middle age, taking into account menopausal state and metabolic syndrome to improve oral health-related quality of life.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dental implants have become increasingly common for the management of tooth loss. In the late 1970’s, a Swedish orthopedist named Per-Ingvar Branemark introduced what he termed osseointegrated implants to dental practice [1]. A dental implant is a titanium screw which is placed into bone to replace missing teeth. The implant mimics the root of a tooth in function. It is not only biocompatible, but actually fuses to bone by osseointegration. The growth of osseointegrated implants symbolizes one of the most significant breakthroughs in current dental practice in the oral rehabilitation of partially or fully edentulous patients [2]. As with most treatment procedures in dentistry today, dental implants not only involve scientific discovery, research and understanding, but also application in clinical practice. Dental plaque represents a classic example of both a biofilm and a microbial community, in that it displays emergent properties, i.e., plaque displays properties that are more than the sum of its constituent members [3], and microbial communities are ubiquitous in nature and usually exist attached to a surface as a spatially organized biofilm. Pathogens of the subgingival microbiota can interact with host tissues even without direct tissue penetration, and the subgingival microbiota accumulate on the oral cavity to form an adherent layer of plaque with the characteristics of a biofilm. Dental biofilm forms via an ordered sequence of events, resulting in structured and functionally organized species rich microbial community and modern molecular biological techniques have identified about 1000 different bacterial species in the dental biofilm, twice as many as can be cultured. Peri-implantitis is a sitespecific infectious disease that causes an inflammatory process in soft tissues, and bone loss around an osseointegrated implant in function. The aetiology of the implant infection is conditioned by the status of the tissue surrounding the implant, implant design, degree of roughness, external morphology, and excessive mechanical load. The microorganisms most commonly associated with implant failure are spirochetes and mobile forms of Gram-negative anaerobes, unless the origin is the result of simple mechanical overload. Diagnosis is based on changes of color in the gingiva, bleeding and probing depth of periimplant pockets, suppuration, X-ray, and gradual loss of bone height around the tooth. Treatment will differ depending upon whether it is a case of peri-implant mucositis or peri-implantitis. The management of implant infection should be focused on the control of infection, the detoxification of the implant surface, and regeneration of the alveolar bone [4].","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70291345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study attempts to calculate the prevalence of WP use and discover the awareness level regarding its effect on oral health in a sample collected from Riyadh City. Method: A total of 602 residents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were selected by cluster sampling from the five largest shopping malls in Riyadh. Data were collected using an Arabic questionnaire with demographic characteristics. Results: The majority of the participants were aware that WP smoking is a risk factor for oral cancer, periodontal diseases, bad taste, tooth and oral tissue staining, and bad breath. However, the prevalence rate of WP use was 16.9% with 95% confidence intervals (14.03% - 20.18%). WP use was more prevalent among the male gender (22.3% in males vs. 10.2% in females, P-value = 0.001), cigarette smokers (38.0% in cigarette smokers vs. 13.8% in non-cigarette smokers, P-value = 0.001), and people who avoided dental visits (31% never visited a dentist, 25.9% had 1-5 visits vs. 13.2% who had 5 or more visits, P-value = 0.001). Conclusion: The primary WP usage in Saudi Arabia came from the male gender, cigarette smokers, and people who avoided dentist visits. Anti-WP smoking interventions that target the male gender and cigarette smokers are needed to prevent WP use among these subjects. Future study may be warranted to move beyond oral health, thoroughly grasp the motives of WP users relative to cardiovascular risk, and lead the way toward creation and implementation of a CVD intervention program.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Determining the magnitude and extent of this phenomenon is essential to construct an effective strategy to counter and prevent it. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in SA over the past 15 years (2000-2015). Studies were gathered by reviewing published papers in the Medline and Google Scholar databases reporting the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in SA over the past 15 years. In 2007, the prevalences of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect in previous studies were 70%, 15%, and 15%, respectively. Between 2000 and 2008, the prevalence of child physical abuse and neglect was greater than other forms of abuse. Additionally, the annual report of the National Family Safety Registry noted the same findings. In 2014, a study in Al-Kharj found that psychological abuse was most prevalent among teenagers. In conclusion, child physical abuse and child neglect were the most prevalent forms of abuse over the last 15 years, whereas the recognition of emotional abuse started late compared with other forms of abuse. Awareness of the phenomenon of child abuse and neglect is improving in SA. Consequently, the detection and reporting of such cases are growing across the nation.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"2015 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, there is a vast choice of products to overcome it. The aim of the present observational study was to compare the efficacy of three prophylaxis pastes in occluding dentinal tubules from in an in vitro setting. \u0000Methods: Longitudinal mesio-distal sections were obtained from a sample of ten extracted teeth. Morphological analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) assessed the penetration of three different prophylaxis pastes in dentinal tubules: Nupro by GSK, Stomyprox by Biorepair, Colgate Pro-Sollievo. The use of the Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX probe) allowed assessing the exact composition of each product. \u0000Results: The SEM analysis revealed that only Stomyprox by Biorepair could penetrate the dentinal tubule due to its low crystallinity. Its small sized particles (˜1.60 μ) fit better the tubules lumen if compared to the other two pastes with higher sized granules. The small sample size and the lacking of a quantitative evaluation of tubules filling limit this result. \u0000Conclusion: The occlusion of dentinal tubules is one of the possible ways to reduce dentine hypersensitivity in a professional setting. Small sized particles fit better the lumen of tubules. In conclusion, there is a biological rationale in preferring prophylaxis pastes characterized by a low crystallinity. It is worthy to investigate furthermore, and in a clinical setting, the efficacy of the prophylaxis paste made by small sized particles of Hydroxyapatite.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A series of 29 OSSC-diagnosed patients and their clinical and demographic data were collected. In order to identify invasive process, Hematoxiline and Eosin (HE) staining of all cases were analysed and CD31, CD34, S100 and PGP9.5 protein expression were performed by immunhistochemistry. Results: All data were statistically assessed by Kappa test and McNemar’s. We identified vascular and perineural invasions in 17.2% and 31% of cases, respectively, by HE staining analysis. We found intense peritumoral microvascular density in 82.8% of cases, by CD31 immunostaining. The CD34 antibody was recorded only 6.9% of cases with vascular invasion. Perineural invasion was detected in 44.8% of S100 protein immunostained cases, and 58.6% of cases were immunostained by PGP9.5 protein. Conclusion: According to our H/E and immunohistochemistry analysis, regarding the presence of perineural invasion, PGP9.5 protein was more effective than the others. It was concluded that the identification of vascular and perineural invasions is a useful tool for the prognosis of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, thus histopathological and immunohistochemistry methods should be combined for an effective analysis for this tumor.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"2015 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
