The achievement of optimum oral health can however be limited by certain disabilities. Oral diseases can also have an impact on quality of life, affecting chewing, eating, speaking, self-esteem, social interactions and relationships. The aim of this study was to determine the OHRQOL of physically challenged patients attending the physiotherapy clinic at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja (LASUTH) using the Oral Health Impact Profile -14 (OHIP-14). This cross-sectional study was conducted at the physiotherapy clinic of LASUTH. A simple random sampling technique was utilized to recruit the respondents and an interviewer administered questionnaire was employed to obtain socio-demographic information, clinical status, OHRQOL and to record the findings of the oral examination by trained examiners. Sixteen (20%) of the subjects attended the physiotherapy clinic due to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), 14 (17.5%) had lumbar spondylitis while 10 (12.5%) had cervical spondylitis. The highest mean OHIP-14 impact score (1.67) was observed in the subdomain of discomfort on chewing. There was a strong association between the total OHIP-14 scores of the subjects and their clinical indicators. Using the overall mean OHIP-14 scores, the educational level and the nature of disability of the subjects was significantly associated with OHRQOL with patients with CVA reporting the highest impact. Improving the levels of oral health in those with impairments or disabilities is a major issue for the dental care services. The physiotherapy clinic can be an avenue for aggressive oral health promotion activities in this group of patients.

In the oral cavity, diabetes mellitus may lead to salivary dysfunction, increased susceptibility of oral tissues to trauma and periodontal disease. There is a possibility that oral health education and oral prophylaxis may have a positive impact on the OHRQOL of diabetic patients. The purpose of this study therefore, was to evaluate the impact of Oral Health Education and oral prophylaxis on the OHRQOL of diabetic patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja (LASUTH) using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). The study subjects had an interviewer-administered questionnaire employed to obtain information on their biodata, baseline OHIP-14 scores and periodontal/glycaemic parameters. They then received oral prophylaxis and oral health education and were reviewed at one, three and six months respectively. After 6 months, the periodontal and glycaemic parameters of the subjects were recorded again and the OHIP-14 form was used to evaluate the impact of the interventions on their OHRQOL. At baseline, subjects reported moderate and high impacts on their quality of life in the sub-domains of discomfort, pain, self-consciousness and embarrassment. The prevalence of moderate and severe periodontitis in this study population was 37.5%. At the 6 months review, there was a significant reduction in the Fasting Blood Sugar and 2 hours Post Prandial glucose of the subject was compared to baseline scores. There was also a significant mean reduction in the periodontal parameters and an improvement in the OHRQOL of the subjects. The greatest improvement in OHRQOL was in the subdomain of discomfort, pain, self-consciousness and embarrassment. This study demonstrated that oral prophylaxis and oral health education may result in an improvement in the OHRQOL of the diabetic subjects. Further studies using a randomized controlled trial design are however recommended to validate these findings.

Occult caries/ hidden carious lesions are very challenging for detection as far as dentists are concerned. However, the nature of these lesions, their etiologies & the reasons of why they have eluded early, clinical diagnosis are still unclear. Till date only a very few microbiological studies have been conducted to obtain an insight into the bacteriological profile of these lesions which can also be an etiological factor. The aim of this case report is to present one such case of occult caries which also includes a microbiologic analysis of the lesion. It also includes a novel approach using revascularization for the management of the affected immature tooth.

There has been considerable research performed on this material since it’s launching; however, there is scarce number of review articles that collates information and data obtained from these studies. The purpose of this article was to review the clinical applications and advantages of biodentine in the pediatric dental practice. Electronic search of English scientific papers from 1992 to 2015 was accomplished using Pub Med search engine. The following search terms used were clinical applications, biodentine, pediatric dentistry, children, advantages, dentin substitute, pulp therapy, root filling, and tooth repair. Due to its major advantages and unique features as well as its ability to overcome the disadvantages of other materials, biodentine has great potential to revolutionize the different aspects of managing both primary and permanent in endodontics as well as operative dentistry.

However, there remains a risk of extrusion of these irrigants beyond and into the surrounding tissues which causes severe complications. \u0000Conclusion: This article discusses the use of sodium hypochlorite with its inadvertent effects. Complications with the use of sodium hypochlorite can be avoided by the use of specialized needles, avoiding excessive pressure, not wedging the needle tip in the canal. Early recognition and management of advertent effects of sodium hypochlorite remains vital for the patient’s safety.

Baseline periodontal examinations were performed for each patient, including: gingival inflammation (GI), plaque (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), periodontal probing depths (PD), recession, furcation, and mobility. These periodontal parameters were evaluated at six weeks and at twelve weeks for each patient. Patients were instructed to strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each toothbrush, and to refrain from all other oral hygiene measures. \u0000Results: \u0000Although not statistically significant, the Hydrabrush/30 Second Smile toothbrush showed a greater reduction of GI and BOP when compared to the control brush. In addition, the Hydrabrush/30 Second Smile toothbrush was able to further reduce PD, BOP, and plaque over time thus displaying an additive effect that was statistically significant at 12 weeks compared to 6 weeks. \u0000Conclusion: \u0000Concomitant with periodontal therapy provided to gingivitis and slight periodontitis patients, using the Hydrabrush/30 Second Smile toothbrush twice daily for only 30 seconds, can be equally effective as a conventional electric toothbrush used twice daily for 2 minutes, in improving gingival health over time. Clinical significance: \u0000This study demonstrates that improved gingival health can be achieved in shorter brushing time using the Hydrabrush/30 Second Smile toothbrush. This may improve oral hygiene compliance for all patients, especially those with dexterity issues.
