Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Study participants were dentists working in clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Results: Dentists reported low confidence in caring for patients with SHCNs. A relationship existed between the quality of dental education and the dentists’ perception of their patient care. A great proportion of respondents were willing to attain educational activities to enhance their knowledge and skills. Conclusion: Extensive efforts for curriculum needs assessment should be adopted to include core skills that are transferable through the entire dental curriculum and encourage a patient-centered approach in learning. The proposed curricula should also adopt the development of joint medical and dental curricula modules that focus on the care of individuals with SHCNs. These efforts should be expanded to include a national strategy to disseminate these curricula to all Saudi medical and dental schools.

Facial appearance of a person contributes to his self-confidence and thereby provides social recognition to a person. The present study was conducted with the aim to assess the prevalence of malocclusion using Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), aesthetic self – perception using Oral Aesthetic Subjective Impact Scale (OASIS) and to evaluate the correlation between these two scores among 18 to 24 years old college students in Chennai. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study employing cluster random sampling was conducted among the college students in Chennai. Students aged between 18 to 24 years were clinically examined for assessing prevalence of malocclusion using (DAI) followed by assessment of self-perception of aesthetics using (OASIS) with a self-administered questionnaire. Correlation between the scores was assessed using Pearson’s correlation. Results: 573 study subjects participated in the present study, 73.8% study subjects had normal occlusion or slight malocclusion 18.2% study subjects had definitive malocclusion 6.3%) study subjects had severe malocclusion and 1.7% study subjects had very severe malocclusion. N=173 (30.2%) of the study subjects were very concerned about the appearance of their teeth. A significant positive correlation (r=0.287), (p<0.05) was observed between the DAI score and OASIS score among the study subjects. Conclusion: 8.2% of the study subjects had severe malocclusion, there is no significant difference in the prevalence of malocclusion across gender, mean OASIS score was high among female compared to males and a significant positive correlation observed between DAI and OASIS, and hence OASIS measure can be used to assess the self-perception of malocclusion.

Methods: Inclusion/exclusion criteria included children (≤ 12 years and younger) who received ART on asymptomatic carious primary teeth without history of previous restoration (N=178). For this longitudinal study, data collection included demographics, health status, initial date of ART placement, date of ART re-placement, and baseline dmft/DMFT. Variables collected at follow ups included appointment dates, dmft/DMFT, final restorative treatment, pulp therapy, and extraction. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all variables while Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to summarize overall treatment success. Unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (HR) from Cox Proportional Hazard Regression with robust standard error were used to compare survival rates for variables of interest (P<0.05). Results: The overall 5-year survival rate of primary teeth receiving ART restorations was 69.5%. While age, gender, baseline dmft/DMFT, tooth type, and number of ART surfaces were not associated with tooth survival time, child’s health status had a significant association (p=0.02). Conclusion: Among this pediatric rural population, a significant tooth survival rate was observed following treatment with ART. Replenishing ART was successful in extending survival tooth until their natural exfoliation or placement of a definitive restoration.

Methods: We recruited 23 subjects with gingival recession who received regular periodontal maintenance care at Western University of Health Sciences Dental Center, and who did not exhibit signs of acute dental and systemic disease, occlusal discrepancies and para-functional habits. We randomly assigned these subjects to two groups, one using a soft nylon-bristled tooth brush, and the other group using the experimental tooth brush that contains a brush head with short, soft, rubbery cones. Both groups received regular periodontal maintenance and periodontal exams by blinded examiners every 3-4 months measuring probing depth, bleeding on probing, plaque indices. Tooth brush use was monitored by phone follow-up and measuring tooth brush wear of the tooth brushes assigned to subjects. Gingival recession was assessed clinically and through use of a stent on diagnostic casts obtained at each visit. Results: Average probing depths, plaque levels, and the number of sites with bleeding on probing did not change over one year. Subjects were compliant with tooth brush use as tooth brushes showed consistent wear patterns, but with much less tooth brush damage in the bristle-less brushes. There was a small, but statistically significant improvement of gingival recession (0.4 mm, p<0.01) at sites with gingival recession in the experimental tooth brush group compared to the control group and compared to baseline gingival level. Conclusion: A bristle-less brush appears to be more suitable in preventing additional gingival recession in patients with a history of aggressive tooth brushing.

Control of oral diseases of postnatal mothers depends on the availability, readiness and accessibility of oral health systems, but any reduction of risk to diseases is only possible if services are oriented towards Primary Health Care (PHC). \u0000107 cases (postnatal mothers who were present users of oral health services in the dental unit at the time of their interviews) and 107 controls (postnatal mothers who were present non-users of oral health services in the postnatal and immunization unit at the time of their interviews) were included in the study. Age matched non-users of oral health services who were fulfilling the same inclusion criteria for users of oral health services were selected for comparison. A closed ended questionnaire was specifically designed for the study in English, and together with the information sheet and consent forms translated into the vernacular. Questionnaires were administered by a trained researcher from December 2010 - February 2012. The questionnaire was divided into four categories, namely, sociodemographic factors, socio-economic factors, access factors and utilization factors. Bivariate (Chi-square test) and multivariate (logistic regression) analyses were carried out to find associations between the factors and use of oral health services. \u0000Results: The study revealed that the majority of postnatal mothers were less than 29 years old (61% were cases and 47% were controls); were biological mothers (93% cases and 78% controls); were unemployed (93% cases and 84% controls); were on social grants (68% cases and 66% controls) and had a secondary school education (80% cases and 79% controls). In the control group, 64% reported that they had dental problems compared to 36% in the case group, but only 51% of the controls reported that they had previous visits at Sisters of Mercy dental clinic compared to 64% of the cases. Bivariate analysis revealed significant differences in 14 variables. Logistic regression revealed the strongest predictors for present use of oral health services to be: the number of household children and travelling time. Participants in the dental unit had to travel for 30 minutes who were found to be more likely to utilize oral health services (OR= 1.38; CI=1.01-1.90; P ≤ 0.05) compared to those from the postnatal unit who had to travel longer (more than 1 hour). Participants with fewer children in the postnatal unit were found to be less likely to utilize oral health services (OR= 0.53; CI=0.305-0.924; P ≤ 0.05) compared to those with more children (>5) in the dental unit. \u0000Conclusions: Despite having fewer children, most postnatal mothers in the postnatal unit did not make previous use of oral health services. One of these abnormalities is; cleft lip and palate. Such a condition when occur, it can affect the child and provoke physiological and psychological consequences. One of the desired and sparkling line of treatment is stem cells engineering. There are many different types of stem cells. The most popular stem cells used in craniofacial treatment are; bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs). Although both showed positive results, still there are few comparative studies that evaluate the effectiveness of AT-MSCs over BM-MSCs. The purpose of this review was to provide an overview of stem cells and their clinical uses, and to compare the effectiveness of BM-MSCs and AT-MSCs in cleft lip and alveolus patients. Electronic search of English scientific papers from 2000 to 2017 was accomplished using PubMed, Cochrane Database and Google Scholar search engines. The following search terms used were, Cleft Lip and Palate, Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Clinical Applications in Dentistry, Animal Studies. Stem cells offer a new era for craniofacial reconstruction. Both of adipose and bone marrow derived stem cells show effective results in the level of restoring function and esthetic. However, the AT-MSCs were easier to obtain without any harm to the patients.

The morphological variations of the maxillary first molar have been the subject of many studies, with most studies focusing on multiple canals within the mesiobuccal root, but maxillary molars may also have fins, isthmi, lateral canals, and in this case, additional palatal canals. Identification and treatment of all canals and anatomical variations is vital for a successful endodontic outcome. Methods: A maxillary first molar with pulpal necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis due to a deep carious lesion was accessed for root canal treatment under a dental operating microscope. Four canals were minimally instrumented to an apical size #20 and treated with the GentleWave® Procedure. The GentleWave Procedure involves Multisonic Ultracleaning™ that creates cavitation with activated distilled water, sodium hypochlorite and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). After the GentleWave Procedure, a fifth canal, not previously realized, was detected in the palatal root. The fifth canal had been visibly cleaned of debris. Five canals were obturated utilizing gutta-percha and warm vertical condensation with an epoxy resin based sealer. Results: Post-operative radiographs show 5 root canals: 2 palatal canals, 2 mesiobuccal canals, and 1 distobuccal canal. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan shows a three-dimensional fill and obturation of complex anatomy. Three-month follow-up evaluation shows radiographic and clinical healing, resolution of periapical lesions, and complete resolution of the clinical symptoms. Conclusion: This case reports describes successful endodontic treatment of a rare maxillary molar with 5 canals, one of which was uninstrumented, utilizing an advanced technology, the GentleWave Procedure. This report highlights the importance of identifying and cleaning complex anatomy to increase successful outcomes.
