Materials and methods: This study is a collaborative work between King Abdulaziz University with, Cairo University, Egypt. A split-mouth design was used in 6 healthy male dogs. Four teeth were selected per dog (total, 24 teeth). The immature upper left second and third permanent incisors were designated as group A (experimental group), and contralateral teeth were designated as group B (control group). Periapical periodontitis was induced in both groups. After disinfection, group A received AD-MSCs and growth factors within a chitosan scaffold, whereas group B received growth factors within a chitosan scaffold. Periradicular healing, root-wall thickening and lengthening, and apical closure were blindly monitored radiographically for 4 months. The animals were euthanized and the teeth examined histologically for healthy pulp/dentin complex-like tissue. Results: Group A showed significantly higher increase in radicular thickening, root lengthening, and apical closure than group B. However, there was no significant difference in apical healing. Histologically, the teeth of group A, but not group B, showed regeneration of pulp/dentin-like tissue. Conclusion: AD-MSCs in conjunction with growth factors incorporated into a chitosan hydrogel scaffold regenerated pulp/dentin-like tissue and facilitated complete root maturation of non-vital immature permanent dog teeth with apical periodontitis.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"2017 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2332-0702.1000217","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45734315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The determination of the occlusal plane can have profound effect on the short and long term success of a restorative case. To determine the appropriate occlusal curve for individual patients and to compare the deviation of the clinical occlusal curve with the ideal ones, we have fabricated customized BOPA. The inclination of occlusal plane straightly governs the balance of occlusion in complete denture. Consequently, it is necessary for dental hygienists to obtain a basic knowledge of halitosis. To achieve this, we must improve the motivation of dental hygienist students to acquire such knowledge. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire survey to assess the awareness and knowledge of the problem among dental hygienist students and compared the results of the survey for students in the first and third grades. The percentage of students who perceived the oral malodor of patients was higher in the third grade group. The third graders also placed a greater importance on the participation of dental hygienists in halitosis treatment. Most students in both grades believed that demand for halitosis treatment would increase, although there were students in the first grade that did not hold this view. A similar percentage of students in the two grades were willing to study halitosis, although some first grade students were not at all interested. Many more students in the third grade wanted to take part in halitosis treatment. Student knowledge of halitosis was approximately the same in both grades, but, surprisingly, the third graders gave some incorrect answers in this area. From the results of this study, the third grade students appeared to have higher motivation to study halitosis treatment than the first graders. However, the upper grade students seemed to lack some knowledge, which may be due to the extended time since they had studied the topic at school. It is necessary for us to improve student motivation for studying halitosis and for maintaining their knowledge in order to better perform the treatment of halitosis after the students become dental hygienists.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2332-0702.1000211","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, we have been assumed that the reconstruction of optimal vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) with complete dentures could reduce symptoms of mild to moderate sleep apnea in edentulous patients who have not worn dentures or have used inadequate ones. The aim of this study was to determine how the prosthetic treatment of edentulous patients with OSAS can extend the upper airways, reduce the accompanying day and night symptoms of sleep apnea and reduce the value of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI/h). Methods: The study comprised 9 edentulous patients with OSAS (AHI/h 5.70 to 26.30). The complete dentures with optimal VDO reconstruction were made for all patients. For the purposes of this study, the following were used: Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) polysomnographic registration (PSG) of AHI/h, the diagnosis of the diameter of the upper respiratory tract by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and 3 months after the prosthetic rehabilitation. Results: Prosthetic treatment of edentulous patients reduces day and night time symptoms of OSAS. Sagittal and axial tomograms of the pharynx in edentulous patients with OSAS before and 3 months after the treatment indicate significant differences in the diameter of the upper airways, which are correlated with reduced AHI/h (49.93%). Conclusion: The complete dentures prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients, with optimal VDO reconstruction, increases the diameter of the upper respiratory tract which is reflected in a significant reduction of OSAS symptoms and AHI/h.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2332-0702.1000212","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same important issue to the development of therapy for decreased function is study on prevention of aging-dependent functional decline. Early prevention of the oral stereognostic ability decrement might be the better option while investigation of the issues should be considered during the early onset of the conditions in aged patients. This study was conducted to understand the efficiency of tongue’s stereognostic characteristics for middle-aged people with a comparative understanding with young adults. This analysis related to tongue was conducted in 78 young adults (mean age: 24.5 years) and 33 middle-agers (mean age: 50.5 years). The method applied in this study contained 20 varied shaped test pieces in the oral cavity of the subjects. The observations revealed that most of the young adults were able to identify different shaped test pieces compare to the older participants (mean correct number of responses: 16.8 and 15.2, respectively; p<0.001). Depending on the shapes the test pieces were divided into six groups. It was found that misidentification of a piece by the young participants lead to selection of similar piece belonging to the same group. Selection of pieces from other group was almost nil. On the other hand, the older participants (middle-agers) also identified test pieces less often from separate groups. Differences in degree of decrease in the stereognostic ability between middle-agers and seniors whose ability was reported previously were also discussed.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2332-0702.1000210","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years its use has expanded to include versatile applications in the field of pediatric dentistry. The purpose of this article was to conduct an updated review on mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and on its applications in the practice of pediatric dentistry. Sources and data: Electronic databases, “PUBMED”, “Cochrane Database” and “Google Scholar”, were used to identify relevant English-language studies and literature published in the period from 1993 to 2016. The scientific papers were then screened for their relevance to the intended objectives. A combination of the key search terms mineral trioxide aggregate, MTA, pulp therapy, clinical applications, and pediatric dentistry were used. Study Selection: Abstracts and full text articles were used to identify studies describing the composition, manipulation, properties, types, and clinical features. In addition, controlled clinical trials of clinical applications and relevant laboratory research on its properties and safety were also included. Conclusions: MTA is a unique material with various advantages. It has been used successfully by pediatric dentists in a variety of clinical applications. However, its drawbacks especially its high cost, discoloration potential, difficulty in handling, and long setting time cannot be overlooked. With the emergence of other novel tricalcium silicate based materials that overcome MTA’s key limitations, they are competing to be the next potential dentin substitutes for the various clinical application in which MTA has been used. Nevertheless, with the recent introduction of new improved MTA products, MTA-based materials are likely to yet remain at the heart of good pediatric dental practice for many years to come.","PeriodicalId":90904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral hygiene & health","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2332-0702.1000209","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
