Problems with reproduction accuracy also occur because of thickness differences resulting from a variety of effects during fabrication. Therefore, we suspected that an MG with a high level of reproduction accuracy can be fabricated through digital technology to solve these problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether high elastic rubber MG can be manufactured using a 3D printer and its accuracy. Materials and Methods: In this study, the same ready-made plaster model was used as the master model. We used a dental scanner to scan a plaster model, and obtained an STL data of the plaster model. Then, we used software to design an MG which has 2.5 mm thickness onto the STL data, and fabricated high-elastic silicone rubber MGs (Digital-MGs) using a 3D printer. We made Conventional Mouthguards (CMGs) which were made from 4 mm thickness EVA sheet as controls. We measured the thickness of the left and right medial-tooth labial side and occlusal surface, first molar buccal side, and occlusal surface, totaling eight places. Each thickness was expressed as mean ± standard deviation (mean ± SD) and statistical analysis carried out in each group. Results: The result of measurement was 2.49 ± 0.22 mm in CMGs group, 2.51 ± 0.04 mm in Digital-MG group. We found area-specific significant differences in the CMGs group, but there was no difference in the Digital-MG group. Digital-MGs were shaped as designed. Discussion and Conclusion: Due to the problem of model storage and re-impression, application of digital technology such as optical impression and 3D printer to MG fabrication is considered to be useful, and it seems that there is no problem with fabrication accuracy. We believe this will enable the fabrication of MGs with high reproducibility and lead to greater accuracy in MG research.","PeriodicalId":90816,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry (Sunnyvale, Calif.)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70613426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term, Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums or gingiva. Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease if left untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. Thus it can eventually lead to loss of teeth. It is a well-known fact that all periodontitis are initiated by gingivitis. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of 5% propolis mouth wash in chronic generalized gingivitis and also to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of 5% propolis mouth wash with respect to the chlorhexidine mouth wash. Method: A total of 45 randomly selected patients (lottery method) between the age group of 18-70 years were selected for the study and grouped as follows: Group I with 15 patients who were treated with 5% propolis mouth wash. Group II with 15 patients were treated with chlorhexidine mouth wash controlled group and Group III with 15 patients were treated with normal saline (placebo). Result: The results indicated that there was a significant improvement in clinical parameters (p<0.05) in group 1 at the end of the study. Conclusion: Our study data showed that propolis mouthwash is more effective than other mouth washes on plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. The study suggests that propolis can be used as a natural mouthwash, an alternative to chemical mouthwashes, e.g., chlorhexidine.","PeriodicalId":90816,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry (Sunnyvale, Calif.)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70613176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following case series highlights four cases of gingival enlargement, one being Phenytoin-induced, second Amlodipine induced combined with inflammatory enlargement, third inflammatory gingival enlargement and the fourth being inflammatory gingival enlargement combined with mouth breathing. Management per case is different due to different etiologic factors. Hence, for all the cases first, a non-surgical approach was carried out and depending upon the enlargement resolution further surgical procedures with electrosurgery or gingivectomy were performed. Thus, a proper diagnosis with a thorough treatment plan can lead to effective case management.","PeriodicalId":90816,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry (Sunnyvale, Calif.)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70613141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oral health status in the elderly can be one of the PEM indicators. We aimed to assess the correlation between changes in posterior occlusal support status and the incidence of PEM over a 5-year period in the Japanese community-dwelling elderly. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and seventy-two subjects aged 75 years in 2003 were followed up in 2008. Posterior occlusal support without dentures in 2003 and 2008 was categorized into one of three groups based on the number of occlusal support zones (OSZ) present. According to the Eichner’s Index and changes in the values over 5 years, five groups were defined for the main exposure variables: 1) Complete: four OSZ remaining, 2) Moderate: one to three OSZ remaining, 3) Lost support: no OSZ remaining, 4) Early change: change from four to one to three OSZ, and 5) Late change: change from one to three to no OSZ. For the outcome variables, the rates of changes in protein intake, total energy intake, and BMI over 5 years were calculated and divided into two groups. The nutrition status for malnutrition was defined as A) IPE: the rates of changes in protein and total energy intake were less than or equal to the median and B) IPEB: the rates of changes in the three items were less than or equal to the median. Results: Male subjects whose posterior OSZ decreased from four to one to three over 5 years had a significantly higher risk of IPE and IPEB than those in other groups (odds ratio: 4.0 for IPE and 4.3 for IPEB). Conclusion: Male elderly participants who lost posterior occlusal support zones over 5 years experienced a decrease in protein intake and had an increased risk of PEM.","PeriodicalId":90816,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry (Sunnyvale, Calif.)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70613226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, augmentation of multiple edentulous atrophic segments usually necessitates the use of extraoral donor sites. This chapter introduces the Wedge Technique, as a new bone augmentation method that can augment multiple edentulous ridges with intraoral cortical bone grafts. Patients with moderate to severe ridge atrophy in different regions of the jaws were treated with the wedge technique (WT). Patients received a panoramic radiograph immediately after the surgery, and they were examined clinically and radiographically (periapical radiograph) every 2 weeks. At four months, CBCT was performed to evaluate the bone gain. Reentry was performed after 4 to 5 months to evaluate the new bone volume and quality and to insert implants. The follow-up period ranged from 30 to 120 months. The healing process was uneventful, with minimal morbidity. The success rate was 95%, the bone gain average was 3–6 mm vertically and 3–9 mm horizontally. The wedge technique can augment multiple segments of atrophic ridges with a small amount of autogenous graft. The achieved bone volume was satisfying, especially that the majority of the augmented areas were at posterior mandibular defects.","PeriodicalId":90816,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry (Sunnyvale, Calif.)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70658418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
