Protection motivation theory and multinomial regression model were applied to estimate the mode choice behavior during the pandemic, compared to the pre-COVID period. Results indicated that public transport modes are the dominant modes before and during the pandemic but the choice of these modes declined during the pandemic by about 33 percent. Respondents placed more priority on pandemic-related risk, cleanliness, social-physical distancing, good airflow, and travel cost when deciding mode choice during the pandemic, compared to the pre-COVID period. Pandemic-related factors, gender, income, distance of residences, and travel cost are the significant predictors of mode choice. Passengers are also likely to choose a lesser amount of public transportation whereas more choice for alternative modes. The reasons are the passengers’ perception of travel risks, greater exposure to infections; shortage of infection prevention services; unaffordable service fees; disruption of services, being made out of work and working from home. Overall, the study could inform that COVID-19 pandemic is really impacting the mode choice behaviors of urban people. It will imply policymaking to prepare pandemic-sensitive and adaptive transport systems during & post-pandemic period.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75258710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Road users who believe that building cycle lanes will take away their road space may object because they believe there is not enough space to do so. This study aims to address the visual perception of road space by exploring the relationship of the road users’ country of residence with how they perceive road space. Through an online survey distributed in three countries (n = 1591) with different levels of implemented cycle lanes this study demonstrates that the road space context significantly influences the visual perception of road space. Residents in the Netherlands, where cycle lanes are a common element of the road space, demonstrate 10% more recognition of having space to implement cycle lanes than the respondents in the UK and Australia, where cycle lanes are not as common. The implications of this research into the recognition by the public of having space (or not) to implement cycle lanes demonstrate the importance of context and provide evidence to policymakers to address a persistent problem.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"143 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73027210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The implementation of the P&R system requires careful consideration of diverse criteria related to private vehicles and public transport, which must be evaluated by transportation planners with expertise in transportation, road safety, and mobility. When determining the optimal location for the P&R system, transportation planners specializing in transportation, road safety, and mobility must take a number of criteria into account. This paper discusses the use of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for establishing a P&R system. In addition, the multi-criteria method permits consensus on the primary criteria for the location of the P&R system in an intermediate city. The result shows that accessibility to public transportation has been identified as the most important criterion for establishing a P&R system by transportation planners. In conclusion, the AHP is a multi-criteria method that allows transport planners to evaluate the location of the P&R system.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88334358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a reflection of the socio-demographic and permeability factors. This paper aims to integrate socio-demographic crime factors with street permeability to find the association with residential burglary spots. We first find the residential burglary hotspots area related to socio-demographic factors of the study area, then identify potential residential burglary risk areas based on the factors of street permeability and find the association of residential burglary with socio-demographics and street permeability factors in Akure. The methodology employed includes the Inverse Distance Weight factor analysis, space syntax, and the Poisson regression analysis. The findings showed hotspots of burglary within neighbourhoods, confirming the relationship between the factors. Issues identified herein denote some logical starting points for criminological engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals. In the conclusion, we discussed the implications for the statistical output.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74253291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Footbridges are recent countermeasures deployed to improve pedestrians’ safety in Ghana. The main objectives of the research were to: (i) identify the lapses on the footbridges and their effects on pedestrian crossing behavior in the vicinity of the edifices, (ii) explore the reasons why pedestrians do not use the footbridges and, (iii) evaluate the road safety impact of the footbridges on pedestrian safety. Naturalistic observations and peak-hour pedestrian counts on the footbridges and within the vicinities of the facilities were carried out. Focus group discussions were also conducted to understand pedestrian crossing and walking behavior at the footbridges. Lastly, pedestrian casualties were analyzed for 3 years before and after the bridge construction. There were 165 pedestrian casualties along the highway section. Of these, 29% were fatal while 40% of the victims were hospitalized for at least 24-hours. Many pedestrians still cross the multilane-highway at grade. The main reasons for non-use of the bridges include heights, lengths, security, poor illumination and hawking. Pedestrian injuries have significantly declined during the after period compared with the before period. Findings have implications for road safety education and siting of future footbridges.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"54 1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78312600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aimed to assess the construction site layout planning (CSLP) practice and the classification of space requirement variables for inner-city building sites. Thus, the study adopted a triangulated study approach and the data was collected through a sequential mixed method that includes case studies: semi-structured interviews, document evaluation, and site visits observation followed by a two-round Delphi survey. The study has identified the space requirement variables, classification, and relationship for CSLP of inner-city sites; classified under three categories: Micro-space (four), Macro-space (18), and Paths (five); and have significant to strong associations with each other. The current practice shows the CSLP is overlooked or fragmented which causes a congested site condition. So, the provided insight on the strong relationship between space requirements will be a basis for shifting from the temporary-facility-centered planning methods towards an integrated CSLP approach to overcome contractors’ problems in the continued redevelopment demand of the inner city.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"2016 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88449656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering this aspect of economic development, this study investigates the mediating role of logistics performance in determining the effects of export and transportation on the economic growth of the panel data of 35 emerging upper-middle-income countries over the period 2008–2018. By employing the economic growth model and considering essential indicators, this investigation addresses key aspects of development in the examined economies. The empirical results show that logistics performance, exports, human capital, and population have a statistically significant impact on economic growth with respective elasticities of 0.28, 0.36, 1.25, and negative 0.05. Importantly, the study reveals that logistics performance moderates the effect of export and transportation on economic growth, thus aiding the sustainable development of upper-middle-income countries by increasing export-economic growth elasticity from 0.36 to 1.26. Although transportation services do not influence economic growth independently, its economic importance became significant with elasticity of 1.113 when logistics performance is improved. Therefore, policy makers in upper-middle-income countries should maintain strict macroeconomic policies that could effectively engineer the sustainable export of goods and services and ensure high-quality logistics performance even in the transport sector. Highlights The study examined the development aspects of 35 upper middle-income countries. Logistics performance, transport services, exports, and human capital positively triggers economic growth with respective elasticities of 0.28, 0.023, 0.34, and 1.25. Meanwhile, population inhibits the economic expansion of the region with an elasticity of 0.05. Logistics performance moderates the effect of export and transportation on economic growth.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80660801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Addis Ababa, the majority of the transit service was provided by municipally owned public bus transportation companies such as Anbessa and Sheger Transport Service Enterprises. This study examined the operators’ operational and financial performance in comparison to industry standards. The ratio analysis approach was utilized to examine secondary data from 2016/17 to 2021/2022, which was employed in the study. The overall findings indicate that, despite differences in operational safety and employee productivity, the Anbessa city bus outperforms the Sheger city bus in some parameters, such as fleet utilization, vehicle usage, and service utilization. However, Sheger city bus outperforms its competitor in terms of operational safety and bus staffing levels. Finally, a majority of the data indicates that the operators’ performance fell short of industry standards. To improve their financial and operational performance and continue offering services that fall short of those provided by other companies in the city, bus transit companies, which receive government subsidies to operate their services, must significantly improve how they use their resource. Furthermore, the municipality should offer subsidies and other incentives based on the genuine company’s performance.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73246050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristic of population, type of generation, and each city characteristic were first investigated for deciding MUP. Next, TH was investigated by analysing preferred housing sizes and prices based on MUP. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted by an exploratory approach on textual and internet sources with a combination of quantitative online surveys with a statistical approach. As a result, the MUP was still firmly dominated by the stereotype of living in a big house with a large land area. In contrast, the realistic housing sizes and prices were narrowed down to a small house with a limited facilities compared to the stereotype-preferred house. Using Chi-square, TH that fits the MUP resulted in a combination of the price under 500 million Rupiah (approx. 33,695 USD) with a size of 60–80 m2. Preferably a below 80 m2 property size, limited space in urban areas is able to be optimized as a settlement by applying the TH concept in Indonesia. By having such a house in urban areas, TH supports millennial’s modern cultural habits resulting in a high quality of living for productive generation of Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75059171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Empirical material from Puolanka is used to illustrate the key tensions of this constellation. We ask: Does the concept of ‘smart shrinkage’ resonate in the context of a shrinking municipality? Is it possible to operationalise shrinkage at the local level? A group of artists has been experimenting with a very peculiar approach by branding their local pessimism (!) and thereby sympathetically ridiculing the growth orientation of a locality that shrinks fast by numbers. What about ‘multilocality’? Is it a true opportunity to increase the quality of life in depopulating regions? Like many rural municipalities, Puolanka hopes that the holiday homes and e-work will contribute to local vitality. We propose that other somewhat surprising forms of multilocality may be even more significant. Those include the global multilocalities of the entrepreneurs with immigration background that keep the last restaurant business up and running, as well as the seasonal workers in agriculture and tourism. Also, the pessimistic artists can be seen as multilocals. The peculiar connectedness that these young people have with Puolanka is of high symbolic value.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"16 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78328432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
