Besides, the possi- bility of security breach increases substantially due to the frequent motion of clients across cells, which gives rise to novel forms of covert channels. In this paper, we first investigate to what degree this breach may occur and we also assess the suitability of existing protocols for avoiding the appearance of covert channels in mobile database access. Based on the discovery of certain vulnerabilities in these protocols, we propose an optional multi-granularity locking protocol that en- sures secure access to shared data in mobile environments without compromising their consistency or the atomicity of transactions.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"19-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent advances in Internet technology allow physically dispersed groups to bypass the obstacles raised by geographical distances, so the development of Internet based groupware may extend collaboration to a global scale. As groupware applications grow larger and more diverse, however, it becomes difficult to anticipate their correctness. In this paper, we address this difficulty within the context of group awareness, which we regard both as a communication issue and a user-interface one. The main contribution of our research is the use of symbolic model checking for verifying group awareness in collaborative work across the WWW. This involves the specification of two related protocols with temporal logic and the development of a methodology for encoding temporal formulae into the language of a symbolic model checker, which eliminates the need to draw state-transition diagrams. Taking then advantage of the model checker's ability to produce counterexamples, we discover drawbacks in these protocols and propose thereon a number of improvements, which aim to transform the WWW into a reliable collaborative environment.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three innovation diffusion models, the interactive model, the linked-chain model and the emergent model, are used to develop an analysis that describes the essential knowledge that each model produces. Rather than develop conflicting stories, each model leads to distinctly different, but complementary, knowledge about the case setting. More generally, the analysis enables us to circumscribe the distinct conceptual domain of each model. These domains define the scope of research questions that can be addressed by each of the innovation diffusion models. In addition to the theoretical implications, the paper also describes the practical indications and actions of the case subjects.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"181-212"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84513574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to fulfil the organizational goals and objectives, its members must understand their responsibilities and authorities, and must act co-operatively. The key to this organization and co-ordination lies in norms, which define responsibilities and authorities for each human agent, and establish regularities of behaviour. In the context of co-operative work, where ‘intelligent’ software agents are involved, to understand the norms of behaviour of various human agents becomes critical. Software agents can perform some tasks autonomously on the user’s behalf. Such delegation involves a set of complicated philosophical and legal issues. After discussion on delineation of various boundaries of responsibility and authorities, this paper addresses norms and normative behaviour of human agents within an organization. It discusses the taxonomies of norms and a method of norm specification, with examples. Finally it presents an approach of norm-based agency for designing collaborative information systems and a case study of an insurance claim for illustration.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"141 1","pages":"229-248"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73063537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
