At present, three common technologies can be used to store and retrieve XML documents, i.e., native XML database, Object oriented Database (OODB) and Relational Data- base (RDB). This paper describes a general method for mapping XML documents to relational database. The method does not need a DTD or XML schema. It uses global label approach for identifying each token in XML document. Three label are added to each token; parent labels, left sibling and right sibling; to facilitate insertion and update process and makes this cost constant, in contrast of previous approaches that need to relabelled following or descendants tokens. The method can also be used for data-centric and document-centric documents. Experiments on this method show its ability to main- tain document structure at a low cost price and building of the original document is straight forward.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"108-122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term spam refers to unsolicited bulk e-mail that people do not want to receive. Today, it is gradually becoming a serious problem that results in significant costs both to e-mail recipients and to ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Furthermore, spam may open the door to security and privacy threats. More and more people have become concerned about the issue and are making efforts to develop various anti-spam approaches, some of which are in-process proposals, while others are currently in use. In this article, we analyze key anti-spam approaches, including filtering, remailers, e-postage, Hashcash, and sender authentication. We discuss their advantages and disadvantages in various aspects. Furthermore, we define our evaluation criteria and compare the anti-spam approaches based on those criteria. These include: cost to adopt, cost for standards and infrastructures, robustness, effectiveness in reducing spam, user convenience and transparency, and e-mail transferring performance. We believe that this paper can serve as a basis for improving existing anti-spam techniques and for exploring the optimum solutions to combating spam in the future. Technical details of each anti-spam approach are not discussed in-depth in this article because of space limitations. Keyword: Anti-spam, junk e-mail, spam.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"36-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68053072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Random sampling is generally not the most effective approach for choosing documents to be la- beled. Active learning selects useful examples for labeling to improve the efficiency of learning. We consider two factors in order to measure the usefulness of a document for labeling. Such a document should be 1) largely unknown to the cur- rent learner 2) influential by being close to many other documents. These factors are stated from a document-centric viewpoint. A similar analysis can be made from a term-centric viewpoint. It is the purpose of this paper to present this term-centric approach to active learning using a naive Bayes classifier. We study both document-centric and our new term-centric active learning methods. We find good performance of the term-centric methods on numerous data sets with different characteristics. In addition, a genetic algorithm is employed to compare our results with estimated optimal per- formance at fixed training set size and our results are between 84% and 99% of the estimated optimum.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"54-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application area involves assessment of each fishing vessel's risk for acting irregularly with regard to re- lease of caught fish, and then combining these risk assessments to suggest vessels on which to concentrate. The knowl- edge underlying the Bayesian model developed is acquired through extensive communication with the domain experts. Following the approach of information systems design research, we have developed a software tool and an understanding of the organisation's needs in order to effectively realise use of the tool. The prototyping development process used is model-centric in the sense that development of the Bayesian networks drives the other activities in the project, such as es- tablishing data sources and overall system requirements. Through further investigations and development of the Bayesian modelling approach presented here, including applying it to other risk areas, we have the potential to make both the opera- tional practices in Norwegian fisheries surveillance more efficient as well as to improve the quality of their operational decisions. In our continuing efforts we will apply, evaluate and further improve on the work processes established during the development of this prototype.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"26-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68053058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of the project directly influences the performance and the survival of the organisation. Recent research has me- thodically collected plausible data in the field of critical success factors (CSFs) within ERP projects. This article describes how the collected publications were used to identify the main CSFs and how they can be ranked according to the impor- tance of success or failure through a literature review. Because of the influence of CSFs to ERP-projects in general, the term \"ERP project\" is used in the further parts of this paper. The second part of this paper proposes how CSFs can be in- tegrated into classical ERP project phases. Past researches did nearly not investigate how CSFs which were mentioned in different publications can influence the ERP-project phases. At the end of the paper the trend of CSF in relation of the publication year and the origin of the author are shown.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"14-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analysis of the type of information required for such a task has given rise to four main areas of research: information retrieval, document annotation, summarisation and visualisation. The first stage of the research has focused on information retrieval, and a new algorithm, “Windmill Expansion” (WE) has been proposed to do this. The algorithm uses retrieval feedback techniques for automated query expansion in order to improve the effectiveness of information retrieval. WE is based on the extraction of human–generated written phases for automated query expansion. Top and Second Level expansion terms have been generated and their usefulness evaluated. The evaluation has concentrated on measuring the degree of overlap between the retrieved URLs. The less the overlap, the more useful the information provided. The Top Level expansion terms were found to provide 90% of useful URLs, and the Second Level 83% of useful URLs. Although there was a decline of useful URLs from the Top Level to the Second Level, the quantity of relevant information retrieved has increased. The originality of SEMIOTIKS lies in its use of the WE algorithm to help non–domain specific experts automatically explore domain words for relevant and precise information retrieval.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, images are usually segmented into a number of regions, and then low-level image features are extracted from the segmented regions for annotation. As the extracted image features may contain some noisy features, which could de- grade the recognition performance when the number of keywords assigned to images is very large, image feature selection needs to be considered. In this paper, a Pixel Density filter (PDfilter) and Information Gain (IG) are used as the feature se- lection techniques. By using Corel as the dataset, 10, 50, 100, 150 and 190 keywords annotation are setup for compari- sons. The experimental result shows that PDfilter and IG can increase the precision of image annotation by colour or tex- ture features. However, they do not enhance the annotation performance by the combined colour and texture features.","PeriodicalId":90365,"journal":{"name":"The open information systems journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"9-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68052970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
