Its prevalence is about 2% among school aged children and it represents 5% of children’s referrals because of a suspected pediatric mental disorder. School refusal is not a diagnosis but an alarming manifestation of many problems involving the child, family, and or school. After detailed physical and mental evaluation, intervention must be tailored individually and it entails a combination of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Family Therapy, Pediatric Mental Health Education liaison, and the intake of appropriate medications for any discovered associated pediatric mental disorder. The success rate of proper management of school refusal is about 70%. The younger the child, the milder the associated symptoms, and the earlier the intervention, the better the prognosis.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"122 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73981360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Method: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out in three schools of some parts of rural areas of Odisha with 125 students of class VIII with less than 35% aggregate marks. Parents, Class teachers and Head of the schools were interviewed through questionnaires and interview schedules. Results: All the students belong to age group of 12-16 years. The ratio of males (85) to females (40) is 2.1:1. Parental illiteracy and no contribution in academics in 88% of the students is one of the important factors in their underperformance. 41.2% of the fathers are alcoholic and 7.2% students face domestic violence. Other causes of academic underperformance are attendance <40% in 44%, visual acuity <6/18 in 8.8%, acute illness (12%), dental caries (28%), worm infestation (21.6%) and other chronic ailments (9.6%). 72% of the students had previous history of academic underperformance. 8.8% of them had history of suicidal and depressive thoughts. Conclusion: Social and family factors have influence on the academic functioning of children. A wholesome approach including finding the etiology and counseling for the students, teachers and parents individually can give a proper direction towards solution for repeated underperformance.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"84 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83886163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A main objective was to examine whether children who slept in the streets although they had parents they could go home to had been victimised more from domestic violence than children working in the street by day but spending the nights at home. A sample of 197 children found in the streets of Juba and Yei, including 8 children who were sex-workers, filled in a questionnaire. In the sample, 43.7% slept in the street. Among children who slept in the street, 81% had one or both parents alive, and among children who had enough food at home, 31.1% anyway chose to sleep in the street. Children who slept in the streets although they had parents had been hit with the hand at home significantly more often, and their mothers had hit their fathers significantly more often in comparison to those who slept at home. Their parents also had significantly more alcohol problems. Of the children who slept in the street, 48% had severe injuries, and 10% had extremely severe injuries. Domestic violence, including physical aggression between parents, and physical punishment of children, as well as alcohol problems of parents were found to be associated with children not only working but also ending up sleeping in the streets of South Sudan.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"112 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79336387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: One thousand and one (1001) adolescents from Iran and 2205 adolescents from Finland (age range 13-15 years) filled in a questionnaire consisting of the following scales: the Mini Direct and Indirect Aggression Scale (Mini-DIA), the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (SEQ-C), the School Burnout Inventory (SBI), and the Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support Assessment (MSPSSA). Results: Iranian boys scored highest on Aggression, Victimization, and School Burnout, and lowest on Social Support, Academic Self-Efficacy, and Interpersonal Self-Efficacy. The Finnish boys scored highest on Interpersonal Self-Efficacy and Emotional Self-Efficacy, and lowest on School Burnout and Victimization. Finnish girls had the highest scores on Social Support and Academic Self-Efficacy, but the lowest on Aggression and Emotional Self- Efficacy. The Iranian girls did not have any highest or lowest scores in this sample. Conclusion: Clear differences due to culture and gender were found. It appears that Iranian boys, despite their higher societal status than girls, experience their school environment as more stressful than Iranian girls do, and than Finnish boys do as well. The findings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80331209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of delays in development and growth among children aged 1-5 years and to explore their association with maternal age. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Northeast of Thailand during April-September 2014. Seventy Thai mothers aged less than 34 years who were admitted to the postpartum ward of a regional hospital and their first child were included. Developmental delay among their first children was assessed by the Denver II, Thai version. Results: Among the 70 children, 22.9% were suspected to have delayed development with delays in language (14.3%), gross motor (10.0%), personal-social (5.7%) and fine motor (2.9%) skills being the most common domains detected. A higher prevalence of language delay was found in boys (21.4%) compared to girls (9.5%) but the difference was not statistically significant. Children aged 36-62 months showed a higher delayed development, especially in the gross motor domain. The prevalence of underweight and stunting were common among children aged 12-35 months (6.2% and 15.6%, respectively) and wasting was higher among those aged 36-62 months (5.3%). Hyperactivity and showing anger when displeased were common. Conclusion: A high prevalence of suspected delay was found among children aged 36-62 months. Suboptimal growth was common among those 12-35 months. Early identification of developmental delay and early interventions may have a substantial impact on financial, educational, and social costs in the future.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"23 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84962555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: Psychiatric disorders in which psychosis may be found such as; schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic-depressive) and personality disorders, studies assess either fathers or mothers as parents experiencing psychosis and samples of children or adolescents aged until 18 were included in the review. As the search strategy; PsycINFO, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Maternity and Infant Care, PsycARTICLES and Cochrane databases were searched from the beginning of databases. Seven studies were reviewed. Results: Overall, studies portray consistency on the fact that having parents with psychosis induces chaotic, ambivalent communication; severe impairments in the ability of parenting; parenting stress; disorganized, disrupted parenting as well as maladjusted relationship; parents experiencing burden of nurturing and features of permissive, neglectful and authoritarian parenting styles. Conclusion: In families where parental psychotic disorder disrupts parenting and parent-child relationship, the more family functioning and parents are supported, less possible negative outcomes and disorganization occur. There is a significant lack of psychological support for parents with psychotic disorders, so that necessity for treatment and support is indisputable.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"167 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72788414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Sustained release methylphenidate (CONCERTA) is commonly used to treat such condition in children. It has a great efficacy in ADHD children. A lot of reports have documented the relationship between MPH and sleep bruxism. However, there is a paucity of reports in the literature that documented awake bruxism as a side effect of sustained release MPH. Up to our knowledge there is only one report of its kind showing such relationships. We report the case of a 10-year - old girl who presented with awake bruxism after her third dose of sustained release MPH. It is a serious side effect of a sustained release methylphenidate (CONCERTA) that might affect health of oral cavity. So, it is important to pick it up early to prevent serious complication and improve quality of life for them.","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"42 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85093757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has sucked the blood of the innocent members of the communities and nations involved and the members of international peace keeping forces and moreover, has placed an enormous burden on the economy of the nations involved as well as the United Nations as a global body concerned over the affairs of the entire globe. Of great importance here is the threat of this form of violence to the right and lives of women and children who are usually the most vulnerable in this situation. Many factors are suspected as the culprits and accomplices to this phenomenon, however, beyond the socio-economic analysis, this study focused on the youth exposure to media violence and attitude towards the phenomenon focusing on the University of Nigeria Undergraduates as the study population. The study involved 150 students from various faculties and departments (From first year to fifth year) between the ages of 17-35. The hypotheses that guided the study were tested using Pearson-r and Spearman Rank correlation co efficiency. According to the findings, there is a positive correlation between exposure to media violence and positive attitude towards ethno-religious and communal conflict (rho=0.14, p<0.001), there a positive correlation between exposure to media violence and negative attitude towards peaceful conflict resolution (rho=0.12, p<0.001), there is a negative correlation between age and regular exposure to media violence (r=0.002, p<0.001) and, there is a positive correlation between age and positive attitude towards ethno-religious and communal conflict (r=0.042, p<0.001).","PeriodicalId":90208,"journal":{"name":"Journal of child and adolescent behavior","volume":"24 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86082308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
