In contrast to rational-economic assumptions, this inquiry examines pricing as a problematic, processual, and negotiable activity. Consideration is given to the fundamental role buyers play in shaping vendors' prices.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"59 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89852412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our findings indicate that occupants of public bathrooms routinely perform a number of interpersonal rituals and engage in a variety of backstage behaviors. Analysis of these routine bathroom behaviors reveals the degree to which members of this society are oriented to certain shared values and behavioral standards. These shared values and behavioral standards are identified, and some suggestions regarding their broader sociological significance are advanced.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"292 1","pages":"33 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77615050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the staff are unable to observe whether their clients are actually looking for jobs, they use client attitude (as reflected in their demeanor in the office) as an indicator of the clients' probable behavior outside the office. Based on their assessments of client attitude, the staff make and justify decisions having important consequences for their clients' lives. Most of the staff's concern is with detecting and responding to clients with “bad” attitudes who, based either on human weakness or self-interested calculation, are treated as unlikely to fulfill their WIN assignments, particularly looking for jobs. The tests may be used to confirm the staff's initial assessments of client attitude or to develop new ones as well as to identify “appropriate” programs to assign clients. The article concludes by considering the organizational factors associated with the WIN staff's concern for client attitude.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"19 1","pages":"367 - 394"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85270536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study attempts to address this problem by examining the social world of one of the politically elite, that is, the occupational subculture of congressional staffs. Congressional staff work in a highly mobile, insecure environment in which current job success and future prospects depend upon development, cultivation, and maintenance of appropriate personal networks. They aspire to build job security and free themselves from feudal dependence on their bosses by developing reputations as influential but pragmatic persons who can be trusted to keep the process orderly and predictable. It is suggested that staff concerns and networking activities have a conservatizing effect upon national policy decisions.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"395 - 422"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76535311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It begins by examining how rookie police learn on the street to use and account for force in a manner that contradicts what they were taught at the academy. It then considers “normal force” and the accounting processes whereby police judge when and how much force is appropriate in specific situations and incidents. It concludes with a discussion of excessive force and peer reactions to those who use it frequently. The study is based on approximately one and one-half years of field work in a major urban police department in the United States.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"315 - 341"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82222671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clients are coerced by criminal justice agents into “volunteering” for treatment and are generally unwilling to make serious commitments to therapeutic objectives. Unable to establish either voluntary or involuntary treatment models, clients and treatment personnel must negotiate working agreements regarding the character of their relationships. Using ethnographic materials, this article examines factors influencing the outcomes of these negotiations and the resulting course of treatment. Claiming they do not need treatment, clients attempt to persuade treatment personnel to side with them against criminal justice agents. Counselors tend to cooperate with clients because they need every possible client due to financial circumstances. Although they intercede for clients with criminal justice agents, treatment personnel also pursue a secondary strategy aimed at enticing some clients to participate actively in therapy.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"343 - 365"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87865401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
