We explore the problem by describing and discussing Mario Brajuha's experiences in the legal system and at his research site when both federal and state prosecutors subpoenaed his testimony and field notes. After an account of the research and the long court battle over field note confidentiality that ensued, we discuss the impact of legal intrusion on Mario's fieldworker roles, scholarly identity, and social support network. The many temporary and lasting changes in the research wrought by legal intrusion are recounted, and the implications of the legal case for Mario, field researchers, and social scientists generally are discussed, with attention to issues of research practice, legal constraint, and ethical commitment.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"201 1","pages":"454 - 478"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78233365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The only way to gather data on social worlds focused around spiritualist or other highly subjectivist phenomena is to enter into them. In this work I explore the historical antecedents and epistemological justifications for “apprentice participation” and explore, through my research experiences, the benefits and problems associated with this methodological strategy.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"41 2 1","pages":"431 - 453"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90012311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using this premise as a point of departure, this article examines how different fieldwork roles facilitate and impede access to different types of information. The types of information considered include (1) direct experience, (2) observationally derived data, (3) members' narrations or their accounts and recounts of their practices and activities, and (4) the “hard data” variety associated with institutional record keeping and formal communication practices. Access to these varieties of information are analyzed in terms of four distinct fieldwork roles employed in studies of recruitment and conversion to a religious “cult,” decision making and intergroup competition and cooperation in the peace movement, and homelessness in a sun belt city. The analysis concludes with a discussion of a number of methodological implications regarding the relationship between different fieldwork roles and their relative informational yield.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"377 - 408"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73026088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article analyzes the research identities negotiated by a female researcher in her study of Chicano gang members and the girls who hung around with them at the park. It is argued that these identities are not only shaped by epistemological and ethical concerns, but by the data to be collected and the interaction of the characteristics of the researcher and those of the setting and its members. Negotiating multiple identities and relationships untypical of those in the research setting and awareness of the content and consequences of these identities allows the researcher to use the appropriate identity to collect different kinds of data and to avoid some difficult situations that membership might make necessary.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"117 1","pages":"409 - 430"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83478767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To the extent that aesthetics has been considered by sociologists, it has been within the world of fine art. Yet practitioners of many occupations use aesthetic criteria in judging the work of their colleagues. I examine how students (trainees) become socialized to the standards of cooking in trade schools. Although these cooking students are being trained for entry-level positions in “industry” (and not explicitly as artists), they are still expected to follow the aesthetic conventions of their occupation. Data on aesthetic socialization in trade schools and the limits of that socialization are based upon a two-year participant observation study of two trade school Hotel and Restaurant Training programs.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"3 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91063612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article focuses on the subjective conceptions developed by the aging themselves and the ways by which these “maps” help them plan, interpret, and evaluate their ties into society. Because of their emerging self-consciousness regarding their place in society, the aging may become everyday experts and practitioners of integrative strategies and tactics to a greater degree than many other people.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"5 1","pages":"117 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85203206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
