It may be an image of a healthy fit Russian astronaut using a vibration technology to counter the deleterious effects of minimal gravity in space, or that of an obese person lying supine on a machine, effortlessly simulating exercise. Today both of these versions of reality are attainable. Technological advances, combined with the race to claim a portion of the global fitness industry equipment market, have made whole body vibration units accessible to a wider proportion of the population. In this paper we highlight the main findings in the research literature regarding the core features and technological elements of whole body vibration. We discuss the major variables informing the evidence-base of whether whole body vibration provides appropriate stimulation to provide efficacious fitness and therapeutic benefits. We analyse whether whole body vibration could be simply considered another fitness ‘fad’, adding to other unwanted, obsolete fitness machines destined for storage in the shed such as Abtrainers. Finally, research on the use of whole body vibration as a therapy for aging adults and those suffering from diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary or airways disease is reviewed to ascertain if modern, affordable machines provide opportunities for achieving physical improvements.","PeriodicalId":89777,"journal":{"name":"International journal of applied science and technology","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78141361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Control of ticks requires the use of appropriate chemicals administered through most efficient methods. This paper focused on ‘assessing the causes of tick resistance to use of acaricides on cattle in Uganda, Kazo County in Kiruhura District.’ Participants targeted included: farmers, veterinary professionals, retail drug shops, suppliers and or importers of veterinary medicines thus giving a sample size of 125 respondents. Purposive and systematic sampling procedures were used to select the respondents. The data collection procedures used included: questionnaires and interviews, observations, and document review. The study findings shows that Acaricides are available and all farmers have access to them but the accessibility is however undermined by the price of acaricides, distance travelled to reach the drug shop, and use of inadequate methods for tick control thus culminating to tick resistance in use of acaricides. The inadequate regulatory framework exposes the farmer to adulterated acaricides instead of the original chemicals which has further enhanced tick resistance to acaricides. The study concludes that tick resistance to acaricides remains a challenge to management of cattle diseases in Kiruhura District due to inadequate regulation in the veterinary pharmaceutical sector which has resulted in penetration of adulterated acaricides in the market, use of outdated Essential Drug List (EDL) by stockists and influence of market forces of demand and supply. Subsequently, the paper recommends farmers to adopt the recommended Good Agricultural practices(GAP) since they result in reduced farm risks and expenses, Uganda government to increase farmers’ access to professional advice by recruitment and deployment of staff at the lower levels and further scientific research be done on the efficacy of acaricides for tick control.","PeriodicalId":89777,"journal":{"name":"International journal of applied science and technology","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87429673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such technology which has been widely successful in coal-fired boilers for power plants is Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR).In this paper, findings on the application of SNCR in preheater lime kilns are discussed. The main challenge for preheater lime kilns is finding a suitable location for injection of the reagent for the SNCR reaction. An SNCR trial in two preheater lime kilns sought to find out if SNCR technology can be applicable in the lime industry, how much NOx reduction can be achieved, which of the two reagents, urea and ammonia, would give better NOx reduction efficiency, the ideal location for injection and the best nozzle configuration. A reduction of 50-60% in NOx was achieved making SNCR technology an economically viable alternative for NOx reduction. Both urea and ammonia were found to be effective reagents for SNCR, but urea was more effective and therefore recommended for use. The ideal location was identified as the preheater cone with four nozzle configuration. No side effects like ammonia slip and loss of production was noted. Increase in specific heat consumption was negligible. Presence of carbon monoxide above 5000 ppm was found to reduce SNCR effectiveness by about 10% and therefore running SNCR in oxidized conditions is recommended.","PeriodicalId":89777,"journal":{"name":"International journal of applied science and technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81651367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been hypothesized that senescence-a dormant condition associated with increased age and apoptosismay play a role in the development of chemo resistance. We performed an in-vitro study with HOSE (carboplatin-sensitive), SKOV3 (chemo resistant ovarian cancer), and CAMA1 (chemo resistant breast cancer) cell lines, which were exposed to a variety of platinum-based treatments meant to model current cover clinically relevant scenarios in terms of tumor hypoxia. They were then stained for senescence in-vitro using B-gal, and analyzed for proliferation using the Cell Counting Kit 8, trypan blue dye exclusion, and survival plating, among other methods. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to determine relative levels of gene expression for classical apoptotic and senescent markers. Our results indicate that proliferation was temporarily halted in SKOV3 and CAMA1 after treatment. Cell proliferation later resumed in these cell lines while HOSE cell underwent apoptosis. Analysis of genetic tests (such as qPCR) also revealed that SKOV3 and CAMA1 had decreased gene expression of key genes that regulate apoptosis and senescence (such as p53 and CDK2). It can be concluded from this data that senescence was in fact a mode of chemoresistance and that future treatments may want to focus on disabling cancerous cells’ senescent stage.","PeriodicalId":89777,"journal":{"name":"International journal of applied science and technology","volume":"119 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76454852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data was collected from teachers and students in Colleges of Education in Ghana. Generally the analysis suggests that maintenance practices and orientation, both among students and staff is relatively low. A direct and related consequence of this problem is the delays in the execution of maintenance works. Also, the Colleges of Education do not have a fully equipped maintenance unit as well as qualified personnel. The implication is that the few tradesmen do the minor maintenance works sometimes with improvised equipment. It is recommended that the process through which maintenance requests and budget proposals go through should be revisited and reduced to the barest minimum in order to facilitate quick reactions to complaints when they are reported. Secondly, maintenance Clubs should be set up in the Colleges to do periodic inspection of buildings that is a post occupancy evaluation every quarterly. This will enable the maintenance needs of the buildings to be discovered in time before the situation gets out of hand. Officers should oversee and ensure that thorough periodic inspections of buildings’ conditions are done. Further, building inspection should be planned, because proper planning is a sure way to lessen cost of maintenance since doing so can provide perception into future maintenance needs and avoid unnecessary costs.","PeriodicalId":89777,"journal":{"name":"International journal of applied science and technology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82025389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
