Methods: Eighteen dyslexic subjects and nine controls [mean age 8.4 ± 1.4 years (range, 7-13 years)] were consecutively enrolled and underwent VF examination on a Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) Visual Field Instrument. Among the 19 locations of the right eye (RE) and left eye (LE) VFs, 7 topographic patterns were identified: central (CE), superior-temporal (ST), and outer superior-nasal (OSN), inner superior-nasal (ISN), inner inferior-nasal (IIN), outer inferior-nasal (OIN), inferiortemporal (IT). The default settings included measurements of both eyes separately at all 19 VF locations, exploring the central 30-degree radius of eccentricity. For each pattern indicated the thresholds of contiguous 5 point clusters of the VF in both eyes were averaged: the 7 threshold averages obtained were compared for each eye between the control and dyslexic groups. Results: For RE and LE there was non-statistically significant difference between control and affected cases for all patterns except for CE, IIN, IT patterns in the left eye (P<0.05). The two groups were comparable for loss of fixation, false positive error, and false negative error. These data indicate that the dyslexic reader's left eye presents less sensitivity to FD illusions in almost all inferior retinal hemifield. Conclusion: Dyslexics analyzed using FD illusions may be less sensitive in specific sections of the VF. This topographic failure may help to confirm that a deficit in the magnocellular visual pathway is correlated to reading difficulties.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100094","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68099878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Almost all patients with mental health disorders consulted their general practitioner in a single year. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and the socio-demographic factors associated with the mental health disorders encountered in general medicine in France. Method: The study participants were selected from the French national cross-sectional multi-centric ECOGEN study. The study was carried out with all of the patients who consulted with their general practitioner either at their medical practice or as a home visit in 128 medical centers, affiliated with 27 university general medicine departments. Data were collected from 28 November 2011 to 29 April 2012, based on the second version of International Classification of Primary Care. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using logistic regression analyses. Results: 20 613 patients were included in the study. The frequency of mental health disorders was 17.6% [CI 95% 17.1-18.1]. The main disorders were depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and substance abuse disorders. With children, the frequency of mental disorders was 0.2%. The most common disorder was in regard to \"specific learning problems\". Socio-demographic and medical factors were for the most part strongly associated with the presence of mental health disorders but in different ways. Conclusion: Mental health disorders are among the most common reasons for consultations in general practice.Efforts are needed to increase mental health evaluation in a bio-psycho-social approach.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100096","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68101138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Zambia the consumption of alcohol and other drug abuse is on the increase with the majority of youths starting to consume alcohol at an early age. Objectives: Aim of this paper is to explore the usage of alcohol and tobacco among University of Zambia students and factors contributing to this behavior. Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional quantitative survey method design. Approximately 800 undergraduate students were targeted and surveyed in classrooms selected through a stratified random sample procedure. Data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire using the Health and Behavior Survey and the Global School Health Survey. Results: The results suggest that consumption of alcohol was higher than that of tobacco. The prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use occurs across all years. However, the use of tobacco products was higher among first years and drinking alcohol was high among fourth years. Conclusions: It is prudent for institutions such as the University of Zambia who are looking after the youth and young adults for extended periods of time to put measures in place to curb such vices as regular and heavy consumption of alcohol.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100055","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68096069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Males are faced with hypogonadism, depression and anxiety, affecting their sexual arousal desire. Male intercourse may be impaired by erectile dysfunction, priapism, ejaculatory dysfunction, and/or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Female sexual arousal may be affected by depression, hormonal imbalance, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Female sexual intercourse may be disturbed by dyspareunia, vaginismus, and anorgasmia. Effects on sexual intercourse may also be seen at the gender neutral level due to cranial neuropathy and various autonomic neuropathies outside the genitourinary tract. Though specific treatments target most conditions, healthy diet and exercise are the best bets to avoid the long-term effects of diabetic complications on sexuality.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100057","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68096910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study determines the antibacterial activity of commercially available probiotic lactobacilli and the curd lactobacilli, alone and in combination, against clinical bacterial isolates. Methods and findings: Two curd lactobacilli (Lactobacillus animalis and L. gasseri) and two commercially available probiotic lactobacilli (L. acidophilus and L. rhamnosus) strains were tested for their antibacterial activity against the clinical bacterial isolates: Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, following agar-overlay method. The ‘R’ values (width of clear zones) due to their action against the indicator bacteria were recorded, and growth inhibitory indices (GIIs) were calculated from their combined action. The commercial lactobacilli strains, for which the ‘R’ values ranged 8-12 mm, from single action, had synergistic activity when used in combination against E. coli (GII: 0.56), while the curd lactobacilli strains having ‘R’ values 6.5-9.5 mm had synergistic activity against both E. coli and K. pneumoniae (GIIs: 0.65-0.74). The lactobacilli strains isolated were multidrug resistant. Conclusion: The current findings suggest the usefulness of natural curd lactobacilli as well as the commercially available lactobacilli strains, alone or in combination, or in combination with some conventionally used antibiotics, as therapeutics against bacterial infection to humans.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"104 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100061","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68097072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The triggers of cell-free mitochondrial DNA secretion are various impacts, i.e. microbial antigen stimulation, inflammatory cytokine, active molecules. It is speculated that the cell-free mitochondrial DNA might be a critical activator of inflammation, coagulation and the innate immune system linking mitochondrial dysfunction, cell death and target organ injury. There is evidence regarding that the cell-free mitochondrial DNA levels may elevate in healthy individuals depending aging and in cancer and non-cancer subjects at risk of CV diseases, as well as in persons with established CH disease. The results of several studies have shown that elevated circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA has associated with cardiovascular (CV) diseases, while diagnostic and predictive value of this biomarker in non-cancer individuals is not fully clear. The ideal test should achieve detection of certain types of microorganisms that are undetected by the pharmacopoeia-defined sterility tests and its accuracy should be confirmed by regulatory authorities. The use of pharmacopoeia sterility tests is limited since they can detect only microorganisms that are viable only in specified media. A rapid test that can detect viable bacteria and microbes that cannot be cultured and never fails in bacterial detection, should appeal to the regulatory authorities. In the agar mediumculture system employed in the pharmacopoeia-microbial test, the test results may be erroneously false negative when the viable bacteria fail to grow under the defined incubation conditions, when inhibitors are present in the test sample, or when scientific approaches are not available to differentiate negative from false negative results. On the other hand, rapid microbial tests with false positive results due to noise caused by detection principle, measurement device, or non-biologic positive substance, imposes huge industrial challenges. In this review, we discuss the rapid microbial tests classified according to various systems for detection of microorganisms and their application, and then introduce some commercial applications of existing devices for detection of microorganisms and provide details of microbial test features, and compare the purposes of the microbial tests.","PeriodicalId":89642,"journal":{"name":"Translational biomedicine","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21767/2172-0479.100087","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68099779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
