Researchers conducted interviews with Eight (8) women within a local rural Hispanic community. We interviewed in a semi-structured format using the participants' preferred language either English or Spanish. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and reviewed for accuracy. Data were analyzed using a phenomenological focus. Half of the participants reported experiencing some type of intimate partner violence in a past relationship. Participants described positive concepts such as fidelity, respect, and communication and negative concepts such as alcohol, fear, and machismo in describing healthy versus unhealthy relationships. There were four overarching themes: Essential characteristics of healthy relationships, operationalization, threats, and ideal relationships. This pilot study provides preliminary insight into rural Hispanic women's experiences in intimate relationships. More research is needed to examine providers' understanding of how Hispanic women define a healthy relationship. This can impact screening measures and facilitate interventions toward intimate partner violence.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135058028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The My Home Life Leadership Support program (MHLLS) is an innovative approach that enhances the culture of care in these settings. This study explored the findings of 298 participants who completed the program in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Data were analyzed from two questionnaires which are routinely completed, by participants on the MHL LSP, the Assessment of Workplace Schedule (AWES) and the Perceptions of Workplace Change Schedule (PoWCS). The results were categorized by factors identified by the exploratory factor analysis. This study focuses only on the quantitative findings from pre-and post-questionnaires. The study also provides an updated factor analysis of the AWES and POWCS. The results provide robust evidence of the overall positive impact of the MHLLS program across the three participating countries. The key areas in which MHL participants report significant change within their care homes are recognition and regard for them and their staff, workload, quality of care, and working relationships. Overall, this study has demonstrated a significant positive change in managers' leadership skills and their perceptions of the impact of this on staff, relatives, and residents.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44111936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is recognised that moving into a care home can be a complex and emotional experience for the individual and their families. Despite this there is a paucity of research that takes into consideration an individuals experiences of the move. An integrative literature review and a thematic synthesis supported the identification of themes describing the experiences and perspectives of older people making the transition. A systematic search was conducted in six English electronic databases (CINAHL complete, ProQuest health and medical collection, PyscINFO, and Scopus). The quality of the research papers selected were assessed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Four predominant themes emerged from the review: (1) Decision making and control, (2) Process of transition, adjustment, and adaptation, (3) Psychological reactions, and (4) Connectedness, support, and companionship. Within the current body of literature there is a lack of understanding of the processes older people undergo that describe their experiences during the day to day adjustment and adaptation to living in a care home. Furthermore, there is limited research into the psychological and/or social experiences of older people moving into a care home that takes into consideration the total relocation process, incorporating residents, early and ongoing experiences during the transition.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44016104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, few tools have been specifically designed to measure empathy concerning dementia training. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a psychometrically valid and reliable tool to measure empathy among health professionals. A mixed methods sequential exploratory design was adopted guided by Fields' theoretical structure. Phase 1-4 (development) of the instrument was based on (1) an extensive literature review, (2) qualitative research, and (3-4) the contribution of a variety of stakeholders and supported by an empathic theoretical framework. Phase 5 (validation) involved a quantitative study among a convenient sample of multi-health professionals ( n = 223) to evaluate validity and reliability and finalize the tool. Full ethical approval was acquired. A 19-item questionnaire that includes four constructions (Previous training α = 0.88, empathy α = 0.91; Understanding behavior α = 0.85; and Person-centered practice α = 0.91) emerged from qualitative findings and a strong theoretical basis. It was verified that the tool had acceptable psychometric properties, acceptable factor loadings, and internal consistency measures. The intervention had a significant impact on the empathy of the participants. The tool proved to be an effective measure of empathy, understanding, and empathy in the performance of health professionals concerning the care of a person living with dementia. It proved to be an effective measure of change over time as a result of an intervention. The intervention produced a significant change in empathy and understanding of the symptoms and impact of dementia. This difference was observed regardless of the health profession. The empathy and understanding in the dementia index are potentially useful took for estimating empathy among health professionals using virtual reality. The questionnaire demonstrated sufficient structural validity and internal consistency in empathy and understanding of the symptoms of health professionals and the impact on the person living with dementia. Further psychometric investigation including larger samples is recommended.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48390420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, there are studies which suggest that back-and-forth scrubbing could be a better technique. However, there is insufficient evidence to demonstrate which disinfection technique is better in reducing microbial load prior to invasive procedures. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of concentric circles painting and back-and-forth scrubbing skin disinfection techniques in reducing microorganisms’ Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) measured in Reactive Light Units (RLU). 293 participants were recruited in the quasi-experimental study. Before disinfection, the participants’ bilateral antecubital fossa was swabbed using the 3M clean-trace surface ATP test swab (3M Clean-Trace) to detect microorganisms’ ATP measured in RLU. Subsequently, on one antecubital fossa, using an assigned cleansing agent (0.9% normal saline or 70% isopropyl alcohol), it was disinfected by concentric circles painting. On the opposing antecubital fossa, using the same cleansing agent, it was disinfected by back-and-forth scrubbing. Thereafter, the participants’ bilateral antecubital fossa was swabbed using the 3M Clean-Trace to determine the amount of ATP present post-disinfection. The pre and post disinfection median RLU and median difference in RLU between the disinfection techniques were compared. Based on 146 participants after removal of outlying data, both concentric circles painting and back-andforth scrubbing disinfection techniques significantly reduced microorganisms’ ATP measured in RLU (p<0.05). However, between the two disinfection techniques, no significant median difference in RLU was observed (p>0.05). Both concentric circles painting and back-and-forth scrubbing disinfection techniques reduced microorganisms’ ATP on skin surfaces. However, no significant difference was observed between the two disinfection techniques, which could suggest that both are equally effective for skin disinfection.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46774484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Zambia, nurse leaders operate at all levels of the health system and can contribute significantly to alleviating the negative outcomes of diseases of epidemic potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity to strengthen nursing leadership efforts towards the reduction of morbidity and mortality from this outbreak. A cross-sectional survey of nurse leaders in six provinces of Zambia was conducted. The data was collected through telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires on roles and responsibilities, nursing leadership, involvement in policy advice and overall experience with the COVID-19 outbreak. Quantitative variables were analyzed for descriptive statistics while qualitative data were summarized into emerging themes. Nurse leaders played a key role in motivating nurses despite response hesitancy due to risk of infection. Ensuring compliance to infection prevention and control standards was a key responsibility for all nurse leaders. Challenges included their late involvement in planning for service delivery, lack of dedicated resources for performing supervisory functions and the absence of a nursing operational plan for COVID-19. The inability to provide for psychological needs of nurses and unclear incentives policy were important factors for the lack of motivation. Enhanced interprofessional collaboration, professional development in critical care nursing, change management and expanded partnerships with community organizations were among opportunities identified. The role of nurse leaders can be maximized by ensuring their early involvement in strategic planning. A funded operational plan inclusive of dedicated resources for monitoring and supervisory functions of the nurse leaders is indispensable. To sustain motivation, facilities for psychological support, medical care, mentoring and a clear policy on incentives are required, as well as, a continuous professional development programme that addresses competences in nursing leadership and critical care.","PeriodicalId":89572,"journal":{"name":"International journal of research in nursing","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44558603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
