Since D. Wilson's work has dealt intensively with salivary hormonal determinations, we illustrate what can be learned from longitudinal series obtained in health or from a patient suffering from adynamic depression episodes recurring twice a year and lasting 2-3 months. The socially less unacceptable collection of serial salivary samples should be introduced more broadly into laboratory medicine for a more refined diagnosis and as a means to guide the optimization of any needed treatment by timing.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"89-104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68133182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His name was brought to my attention by my great Guru and Nobel Prize nominee Dr Franz Halberg and Dr Germaine Cornelissen who is a great scientist in her own right. While I was looking for a Statistical Consultant Referee for the World Heart Journal by Nova Science Publisher, NY, USA, I was very lucky to have him join our Editorial Board. I became closer to him because of his unassuming behavior, friendliness and readiness to help colleagues in conducting research, writing articles and sharing views on various original hypotheses. His views about prevention of diseases have a continuing influence on world research particularly related to chronobiology and clinical nutrition which prompts me to write this editorial.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"110 1","pages":"49-50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68133344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early studies in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and S.W. Australia demonstrated the po- tential value of oestrogen-like dietary constituents, viz. flavonoids and lignans, in treating menstrual dysfunction and act- ing as potential antioestrogens and anticarcingens, acting directly through oestrogen receptor mechanisms or even indi- rectly. This report also listed some international migrant studies. Chemopreventative strategies need to be undertaken, based on well-designed evidence-based information, which lead to the development of functional foods. A balance has to be struck which takes all major disease causes into account and, an affordable lifestyle strategy has to be developed for homo economicus, at different stages of human development, from the conceptus to old age, in which epigenetics must play a very significant role in disease prevention.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"76-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68133140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diet and lifestyle influence epigenetic changes that are heritable. However, a statement of reservation is needed here, viz. that it is often difficult to distinguish between epigenetic changes that are inherited from one generation to the next and true mutations, for instance in mitochondrial DNA. The last topic is a big one in its own right and will not be further dis- cussed in this article. Epigenetic changes induced by dietary nutrients ultimately culminate in changes of the expression of genes through transcription and translation. The interaction between dietary nutrients and nuclear receptors triggers the signaling pathway, leading to modulation of epigenetic change and gene expression. Knowledge about nuclear receptors is important for explaining dietary modulation of transcription via recruitment of large protein complexes. These proteins are capable of causing modification of chromosomal components, can influence chromatin proteins, and affect the binding of proteins to particular parts of the DNA molecules controlling the expression of individual genes. Chromatin complexes between DNA and proteins can be destabilized by recruitment of transcriptional coactivators by histone acetylation. How- ever, in the presence of hormone antagonists or in the absence of relevant ligands, recruitment of other cellular core pro- teins may stabilize chromatin by their influence on histone deacetylases, thus antagonizing the effect of enzymes causing histone acetylation. This article reviews the current knowledge on nutritional modulation of bioactive molecules by epige- netic changes, if they can regulate genetic expressions. The molecular mechanism of action of various dietary nutrients on gene expression mediated by nuclear receptors is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"27-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68132968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In certain specific cases, the improvement in the quality and nutrition of foods by altering their composition were also monitored. However, the practice of biotechnology has also upraised concerns about its potential risks to the environment as well as human being. Genetic Engineering provides resources to host genes into plants via mechanisms, different in some respects from classical breeding. A number of genetically engineered variety of foods have been developed, which have become important nutraceuticals; most notably canola, cotton, maize and soybean, were de- veloped employing this modern technology, and at present the traits introduced are herbicide and/or pest tolerance. Gene technology leads to increase the production in plants, as well as the elevation of resistance to pests, viruses, frost, etc. Gene transfer technology is employed to alter the physical and chemical composition with nutraceutical worth. The pre- sent review article is the compilation of various physiological and biochemical studies reflecting both positive and nega- tive ecological concerns of genetically modified foods.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"18-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68132957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bovine Alpha Lipid colostrum, a proprietary formulation, induced stem cell associated cytokines and growth factor, GCSF, IL-6 and VEGF and also enhanced the differentiation of bone marrow stem cells in vitro. To boost colostrum activity, commercially available natural extracts of immune stimulatory carbohydrates were screened for their capacity to induce GCSF and IL-6. Combining selected extracts with colostrum, showed synergistic cytokine induction in vitro. In a mouse feeding study, a trial formulation of Alpha Lipid colostrum combined with selected carbohydrate extracts, was shown to increase the frequency of bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells to a greater extent that was seen with the colostrum alone, as assessed by CFU assay. Furthermore, a pilot human study showed there were alterations in circulating hematopoietic and mesenchymal/stromal stem cell numbers following consumption of the trial formulation compared to subjects receiving a placebo supplement. These data indicate that is possible to influence the endogenous stem cell niche by oral supplementation with a combination of colostrum and highly potent sources of immune stimulatory carbohydrates.","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0-0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68134062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Economic development and affluence may be associated with a decrease in the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids and significant increase in the intakes of carbohydrates, (mainly refined), fat (saturated, trans fat and linoleic acid) and salt compared to the Paleo- lithic period. The protein or amino acid intake was 2.5 fold greater (33 vs. 13%) in the Paleolithic diet Homo sapiens compared to modern Western diet consumed by Homo economicus populations. Approximately 10,000 years ago, prior to the Agricultural Revolution, our diet was based on an enormous variety of wild plants. However, today about 17% of plant species provide 90% of the world's food supply which is mainly contributed by grains produced by fertilizer based on rapidly grown crops which may result in a decrease in nutrient density and increase in energy. Wheat, corn and rice ac- count for three fourths of the world's grain production on which humans are dependent for their food supply. Grains are high in omega-6 fatty acids and carbohydrates and low in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants compared to leafy green vegetables. It has been estimated that diet of Homo sapiens was characterized by higher intakes by essential and non- essential amino acids, calcium, potassium, magnesium, flavonoids and w-3 fatty acids whereas modern Western diet of Homo economicus has excess of energy-rich refined carbohydrates, w-6, trans fat and saturated fat and low in protective nutrients. The consumption of such diets in wealthy countries in conjunction with sedentary behavior is associated with increased prevalence of morbidity and mortality due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).","PeriodicalId":89504,"journal":{"name":"The open nutraceuticals journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"6-17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68133507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
