Mobilizing local governments to build safe, healthy, and environmentally sound educational institutions for African children, however, has proven difficult at best. This paper discusses problems involved in improving the conditions for education in Nairobi, Kenya, and describes the process undertaken by children in one inner-city slum to envision a safe, healthy school made of quality, inexpensive local materials and designed for the community's unique environmental and social conditions. The purpose of the paper is to propose progressive, participatory ways to design, develop and deliver educational facilities in adverse environments, considering that the priorities of children, parents, local authorities, development agencies, and other groups often conflict.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"13 1","pages":"56 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42086297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These researchers claim that through participation in projects such as school ground greening initiatives, young people can learn skills related to democracy, responsibility, and citizenship. Much of the research on child and youth participation in school ground greening initiatives has been conducted within a single school, making it difficult to understand the nature of student involvement across a larger number of schools. This paper reports on a study of student participation in greening projects at a school board district level, based on two methods: 1) 149 questionnaires completed by administrators, teachers, and parents associated with 45 school ground greening initiatives; and, 2) 21 follow-up interviews with administrators, teachers, and parents at five of the schools. Respondents and interviewees reported that students were involved in selected aspects of the greening projects, notably the designing, planting and maintenance. Much room exists, however, for more authentic and meaningful student participation, particularly in the problem identification and visioning phases. This paper concludes with recommendations as to how school board administrators might facilitate such participation.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"14 1","pages":"130 - 152"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42407726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emerging evidence documents the deleterious impact of neighborhood poverty on children's and adolescents' well-being. This paper summarizes research on trends in neighborhood poverty, extant policies to remedy concentrated poverty, and results from experimental programs that have implemented such policies on low-income, minority families. As a supplement to the limited experimental work on neighborhood poverty deconcentration efforts, this paper reviews research examining school desegregation and residential mobility on children's well-being—two parallel shifts in children's lives. Potential mechanisms or pathways of neighborhood deconcentration efforts on children's and adolescents' outcomes including housing quality, neighborhood characteristics (e.g., resources, violence and disorder), family factors, and social networks and ties are also reviewed. The paper concludes with a synthesis and policy recommendations.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"14 1","pages":"1 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46254419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
