This study sought to understand children's environmental dispositions in the South Bay Region of Los Angeles County, California. We held focus groups with 109 third- and fourth-grade students across four public elementary schools. The young students in the South Bay conveyed largely positive eco-perspectives and suggested a lifelong interest in environmental sustainability. Placing their responses within the school's environmental context suggests that unfavorable local conditions do not hinder the development of eco-affinity or eco-awareness.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"17 2","pages":"127 - 151"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis primarily examines the Foundation's strategic use of murals to engage children, parents, community members, and other stakeholders, particularly in Duang Khae alley and during the annual Rong Mueang Rueang Yim Festival. Creation of these murals contributed to vibrant play spaces and child-centric activities. However, there remains a need to establish well-shaded activity zones on the streets through proactive international collaboration.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"15 6","pages":"184 - 194"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is considerable international interest in this initiative even today. However, many planners and built environment professionals feel the initiative has not done much to provide public spaces and independent mobility for children. This paper engages with such criticism and investigates the drivers and nature of public space interventions in recognized child-friendly cities in 24 countries and demonstrates how the initiative has promoted public spaces for children through policies, planning, and programming efforts.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"68 7","pages":"1 - 126 - 127 - 151 - 152 - 183 - 184 - 194 - 195 - 197 - 198 - 200 - 34 - 35 - 69 - 70 - 91 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The redesign mainly comprised construction and traffic organization measures. The evaluation is based on before-and-after surveys among parents. The results show significantly better ratings in terms of accessibility, quality of stay, and perceived social and traffic safety. While a positive mode choice tendency was observed for school trips of less than 500 m, there were no significant overall changes in mode choice or independent mobility.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"70 1","pages":"152 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored the coping mechanisms, activities, challenges, places visited, and sources of support that predicted teenagers feeling connected to others during COVID-19. Data come from surveys administered in the United States and Canada in summer 2022. Multivariate logistic regression showed that producing personal protective equipment, supporting siblings, getting involved in the local community, becoming more politically active, and taking language classes were positively associated with connectedness. In addition, teens in Canada were more likely to feel connected to others than teens in the United States. These findings can inform policies to enhance resilience in teenagers during protracted crises.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"50 8","pages":"126 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our research explores the connection between place-based cultural education and well-being among Native Hawaiian youth as they engage in restoring a royal Native Hawaiian fishpond, Loko Iʻa Pāʻaiau. We collected data from ten Native Hawaiian high school participants over six months including survey measures, pre- and post-on emotions and values after each weekly session at the fishpond, as well as pre-and post- focus group sessions. The quantitative data revealed gains in positive emotions and mental states, with happiness and focus being the most salient. Phenomenological coding of the qualitative results revealed five overarching themes in the values-emotion interface: 1) valuing the importance of Pāʻaiau; 2) valuing kuleana (reciprocal responsibility) and feeling a sense of accomplishment; 3) valuing sacred land and cultivating humility; 4) valuing and strengthening 'ohana (family) and feeling sense of belonging; and 5) valuing Pāʻaiau as a healing place and feeling peaceful and happy. Findings support providing Indigenous youth, especially Native Hawaiians, with place-based traditional ecological knowledge and biocultural opportunities to promote well-being, character, and identity development.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"27 8","pages":"35 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research sought to understand how sustainability practices take shape and unfold in historically excluded schools in California that had received sustainability awards. Using a multiple case study approach, this research highlights ways schools extended their educational practices into three domains of a sustainability-in-place model—community, compassion, and creativity—and also explores barriers to implementing these practices. Some teachers distinguished ideas of care and compassion for student wellbeing as distinct from the practice of sustainability, highlighting the persistence of mainstream, historical framing of sustainability systems. Research implications address opportunities to expand and strengthen green school research and practice.","PeriodicalId":89337,"journal":{"name":"Children, youth and environments","volume":"41 23","pages":"70 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
