This method facilitates a reduction in microbial load, triggers an elicitor effect, and prolongs the shelf life of fruits. In this study, UV-C was applied to rangpur red lime, Tahitian lime, and sweet orange cv. 'Sweety,' which are the primary citrus varieties cultivated in the northeastern region of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The citrus fruits were exposed to UV-C irradiation for 5 min using a lamp positioned 11 cm above the work area. Subsequently, the fruits were stored in plastic baskets for 21 days at 26 °C with a relative humidity of 70%. Positive and negative control treatments were also implemented. The positive treatment involved samples treated with a 150 mg/L sodium hypochlorite solution for 5 min, while the negative treatment comprised samples without any postharvest treatment. The results revealed that UV-C application effectively delayed maturation, prevented granulation, and maintained the physicochemical parameters, morphology, and surface color of citrus fruits. In conclusion, UV-C shows promise as a technology for treating citrus fruits during the postharvest stage, offering a means to mitigate losses, and assuring food availability.","PeriodicalId":8876,"journal":{"name":"Biotecnia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141715322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the availability of commercial drugs, populations, including those in Mexico, continue to integrate herbal medicine into their healthcare practices. This study on Hermosillo, city in Northwest Mexico, exploring the prevalence and patterns of herbal medicine use. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to September 2023, surveying 441 residents through a structured questionnaire. Demographic characteristics, awareness, and experiences with herbal medicine were assessed. Most participants were female (67.57 %), aged 30 years old or younger (67.57 %), and urban residents (90.70 %). The family was the primary source of knowledge for herbal medicine (73.92 %), emphasizing cultural continuity. Most participants (93.65 %) used herbal medicine when regarded as necessary, with 57.59 % reporting partial success. Despite reservations about safety (41.59 %), concurrent use with conventional treatments was common. The study underscores the persistent cultural connection to herbal medicine in Mexican families. Awareness campaigns emphasizing responsible herbal medicine use, especially in vulnerable groups, are crucial. The findings contribute to a broader understanding of herbal medicine trends and practices, emphasizing the importance of local perspectives.","PeriodicalId":8876,"journal":{"name":"Biotecnia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141701336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of Beauveria bassiana (Bb) combined with diatomaceous earth (DE) in a polyvinyl alcohol flask (Bbl), as well as the combination between them (Bb+DE, BbI+DE) on P. brassicae and Galleria mellonella larvae inoculated by aspersion and immersion was evaluated. Prior to the experiment, the viability of B. bassiana was assessed and one of three commercial brands of diatomaceous earth was selected based on the shape and damage caused to G. mellonella. Radial shapes with and without edges were more common in the diatomaceous earth types, but these did not define efficacy on cuticle damage. The result showed that the Bb+DE treatment had greater damage, followed by the Bbl+DE treatment applied by aspersion. Higher mortality in G.mellonella was 70.1 % with Bb at 120h after sprinkled, while in P. brassicae, mortality reached 42.1 % with Bbl+DE; thus, it is important to highlight the importance of the inoculation method and larvae types used when effectiveness bio-trials were performed.","PeriodicalId":8876,"journal":{"name":"Biotecnia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2024-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140984974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Los tratamientos fueron: B+3 (1 mL L-1), Mn+2 (2 mL L-1), Mo+6 (1.5 mL L-1), sus interacciones (B+3+Mn+2, B+3+Mo+6, Mn+2+Mo+6 y B+3+Mn+2+Mo+6) y un testigo cada 15 d después del trasplante. Se utilizo un diseño de bloques completos al azar con ocho tratamientos y 10 repeticiones. Los tratamientos no modificaron el rendimiento, sin embargo, B+3+Mo+6 mejoró el diametro ecuatorial del fruto. Para altura de planta los tratamientos superaron al control a excepción de B+3 y Mn+2, y el número de hojas se incrementó con Mn+2 y Mo+6. El tratamiento de Mo+6 aumentó el peso seco total. En fruto, Mn incrementó las proteínas, B+3+Mo+6 y Mn+2 +Mo+6 disminuyeron los fenoles, B+3, Mo+6 y Mn+2+Mo+6 aumentaron los flavonoides y B+3+Mn+6 y Mn+3+Mo+6 disminuyeron el glutatión. B+3+Mo+6 incrementó licopeno, pero disminuyó el β-caroteno. Para capacidad antioxidante lipofílica, B+3+Mn+2 la incrementó y B+3+Mo+6 la disminuyó.
