In-depth interviews were employed to examine how men conceptualized masculinity and class identity within the context of their rural community, as well as the impact of this conceptualization on men’s perceptions of health and healthcare-seeking behavior. In unpacking the local understanding of masculinity and class identity it was found that respondents utilized “defense othering” to position their lifestyle choices in relation to others within the community. The categories of “reliefer” and “non-reliefer” were employed by respondents to discuss both masculinity and class identity. Men used these categories as a reference to delineate a hegemonic masculinity within the community, and to explain their health beliefs and practices.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69860133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of several proposed externalizing variables to predict masculine depression in a sample of men (n = 169). A stepwise multiple regression process was used, in which three models were analyzed. The analysis indicated that hostility and anger were the only variables predictive of masculine depressive symptoms. Additional implications for clinical assessment, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are addressed.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69860383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-seven boys and thirty-one girls (grades 1-6) participated in small focus groups. Boys were more likely to say nutrient data informed their healthy choices compared to girls. Boys also equated “meatiness” with health, in contrast to girls’ choice of vegetables. Both genders were positively persuaded by the term “organic.” Previous research documenting boys’ “less healthy” food choices may not be due to their lack of knowledge but due to gendered interpretations of healthy packaged food options.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69859874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Largely unexplored are ways masculine norms are positively aligned with healthy practices like diet, exercise, and doctor’s visits. Hence, we explored how men described their masculine norms in the context of their physical health practices. Data from 4 focus groups and 16 interviews was analyzed for how masculine norms shape healthy intentions and behaviors. Contrary to models of masculinity as just a barrier, considerable health motivation is related to masculine roles of providers, workers, and protectors of family. In particular, work and family were central motivators of healthy behaviors. Better recognition of the role of family and work could help inform policy aiming to support healthier men.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69859818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For men dissatisfied with their circumcised state, foreskin restoration, especially of the do-it-yourself, nonsurgical variety, offers an opportunity to reconstruct the altered body. The aim of this paper is to explore the body politics and aesthetics of men who pursue foreskin restoration, the organizations that support them, and the tools they use. Ultimately, I hope to lay bare what restoration really is and does for the men who practice it.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69859976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following article examines why young men, despite being largely free from ill-health, might take nutritional supplements. It is argued that the advice provided in the popular journal Men’s Health magazine does not unduly bias the evidence base for using nutritional supplements or take a particular stance. Instead, the choice to use supplements may be seen as part of a wider culture concerned with the role of scientific evidence in making health choices, body imagery and body dissatisfaction among men, and the merging of health risk preoccupation with the growing desire to “maximise” health and wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69859650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examined data on prevalence of eating disorders (EDs - which are often characterised as 'female') among males in: scientific literature; readily-accessible web-based information; and UK newspaper articles (published 7/12/2002-7/12/2012). This revealed conflicting statistics. Academic papers suggest men comprise around 25% of community-based samples, but much lower proportions (10% or less) of clinic samples. Websites and newspapers present widely differing statistics both on prevalence overall (numbers with EDs in the UK ranged from 60,000 to 2.7 million), and in men (generally suggesting they constituted 10-25% of those with EDs), rarely distinguishing between diagnosed and non-diagnosed samples. By 2011, newspapers were more consistent on overall numbers with EDs in the UK (1.6 million) and the proportion who were men (20%), drawing on one website as the authoritative source. Conflicting statistics may confuse men searching for ED (or other) health-related information, lead to underestimations of male susceptibility to EDs and/or reinforce inappropriate stereotypes of EDs as confined to adolescent girls.</p>","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/jmh.1402.86","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"34003877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If we assume that reproduction happens in relationships of one kind or another between males and females, then missing men is a considerable oversight. Although there is now much research on fatherhood, merely focussing on this end-stage assumes that women take care of all of the foreplay, leaving unanswered questions in relation, inter alia, to men’s desires for parenthood, men’s involvement in planning or lack of planning to have children, the way men struggle or cope with infertility, their encounters with new reproductive technologies and surrogate mothers, their experiences of foetal screening, their involvement in abortion decision-making, and their experiences of becoming or not becoming a father. In this article I argue that men have compelling experiences throughout the reproductive trajectory deserving of more attention. I offer a profeminist theoretical composition for advancing further enquiries on men and reproduction, which begins with the feminism-informed Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities (CSM), and then weaves this together with the theories of intimate citizenship, sociology of the body, and the sociology of science and technology. I will propose how concepts from these collective theories may be useful in opening up layered questions about gender relations, intimacy, bodies, and technologies in future studies of men and reproduction.","PeriodicalId":88000,"journal":{"name":"International journal of men's health","volume":"14 1","pages":"214"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69860058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
