The aetiology of the condition is unknown, but it is more commonly seen in primigravida and grandmuiltpara women, in association with multiple pregnancies and pre-existing medical problem such as essential hypertension, renal disease, diabetes mellitus and obesity. Objective: To assess maternal outcome of pregnant mothers with hypertensive disorder of pregnancy from June 20 to November 20 at hospitals in Wolaita zone Southern Ethiopia. Method: Institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted. All pregnant mothers with hypertensive disorder of pregnancy were included. Regular supervision and follow up was made. Data was entered into Epi info version 7 by investigators and was transported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was used to identify factors associated with maternal outcome. Results: A total of 225 study subjects were included in the study of which majority of them were multiparous. Preeclampsia and eclampsia were the most common causes of maternal insults either during pregnancy or at the time of deliver. Being nulliparous was about three times more likely to develop poor maternal outcome when compared to being multiparous (AOR 3.45 (95% CI (0.043-15.152)). Conclusion and recommendations: Hypertensive disorder of pregnancy is associated with increased risk of maternal adverse outcome. Therefore, close follow up of all laboring mother and provision of antihypertensive agent as per protocol is very important to control the impact of high blood pressure.","PeriodicalId":87313,"journal":{"name":"Journal of pregnancy and child health","volume":" ","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48029867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is estimated that four million neonatal deaths occur annually, 98% of which occur in developing countries. In Ethiopia neonatal mortality is a major problem accounting for more than 42% of under-five deaths. This study is an attempt to study the determinants of neonatal mortality in Ethiopia using data collected in Ethiopian demographic and health survey. Methods: The survey collected information from a total of 16,515 women aged 15-49 years out of which 9209 women were considered in this study. To meet our objectives, descriptive statistics and Poisson, negative binomial, zero inflated Poisson and zero-inflated negative binomial regression models were used for data analysis considering household, maternal and socio-demographic, socio-economic and environmental variables as explanatory variables and number of neonatal deaths per-woman as the response variable. Results: Each of the four models was compared by a variety of statistical techniques and it was found that zeroinflated negative binomial model was a better fit than the other models. Based on descriptive statistics results 23.2% of mothers have experienced at least one neonatal death in their lifetime. From result of the zero-inflated negative binomial regression model, being born to mothers whose age at first birth is at least 20 years, whose level of education is secondary and above, who reside in urban areas and who attended at least four antenatal care visits significantly decreases the risk of neonatal mortality. Conclusion: Neonatal mortality must decline more rapidly to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for under-five mortality in Ethiopia. Increasing access to maternal and child health services in rural areas, improving the level of education of mothers, encouraging utilization of antenatal care services and improving access to safe/pipe drinking water are recommended as possible interventions.","PeriodicalId":87313,"journal":{"name":"Journal of pregnancy and child health","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2376-127X.1000373","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47400673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the leading cause of maternal death during the first trimester of pregnancy. A better understanding of its risk can help prevent its incidence. This case-control study was carried out to evaluate the risk factors for Ectopic Pregnancy in Nekemte Referral Hospital, Ethiopia. Objective: To identify the determinants of ectopic pregnancy among pregnant women who were managed in Nekemte Referral Hospital, 2015. Methods: The design was hospital based unmatched case control study. Detailed reviews of patient record were made by using structured check list all required information have been collected. 99 cases with ectopic pregnancy were taken as a whole whereas 200 controls have been selected with simple random sampling method. Data was entered and cleaned using Epi Info version 7 then exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Bi-variable analysis was executed then all explanatory variables with p-value of <0.25 were entered into multivariable logistic regression. Determinant factors have been identified based on p-value of 0.05 and AOR with 95% CI. Results: From January 2010 to December 2013, there were 99 cases of ectopic pregnancy in Nekemte Referral Hospital. The average (± SD) of patients age was 27 (± 5) years. The risk factors identified were marital status and history of contraception use. Accordingly, women with single marital status were 10.81 times (95% CI AOR (3.601, 32.465)) more likely to develop ectopic pregnancy than married once. Those who used contraception were 2.27 times (95% CI, AOR (0.214, 24.02)) more likely to develop ectopic pregnancy than who did not use contraception.","PeriodicalId":87313,"journal":{"name":"Journal of pregnancy and child health","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49171552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in children who received prolonged high-dose glucocorticoid for refractory nephrotic syndrome. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was monitored and metabolic parameters were determined. Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was used for assessing glucocorticoid-induced IR. There were 41 obese children with HOMA-IR>3.5. The HOMA-IR showed a positive correlation with prednisone dosage, LDL-C, age and BMI (P<0.01), respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that prednisone dosage, LDL-C, age and BMI correlated independently with HOMA-IR (P<0.05). Twenty-one children received metformin therapy as treated group and 20 patients received placebo as control group. After 3 months of treatment, the BMI and IR were significantly improved and the BMI and HOMA-IR were also significantly reduced compared to the control group. No significant toxicity from metformin was seen. Metformin is safe and effective for treatment of glucocorticoid-induced obesity and IR.","PeriodicalId":87313,"journal":{"name":"Journal of pregnancy and child health","volume":" ","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2376-127X.1000368","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49475880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: We retrospectively investigated 115 patients who were diagnosed as endometrial polyp by transvaginal ultrasonography or sonohysterography and underwent hysteroscopic surgery at our hospital in two years. All surgical specimens were examined histopathologically. Characteristics of the patients including age, size of the largest polyp, desire to bear children, presence of abnormal uterine bleeding and the result of preoperative endometrial cytology were analyzed. Results: Regarding the age, 49 (42.6%) of the EMP patients were in their 30s, which was most common and 65 patients (56.5%) desired to bear children. The polyp size was evaluated before surgery in105 patients and 65patients (56.5%) were medium size (1 cm or larger but below 2 cm). Abnormal uterine bleeding was observed in 46, accounting for 40.0% of all EMP patients. Seven of 115 patients were diagnosed premalignant (3 patients) or malignant (4 patients) on postoperative histopathological examination and 4 of them (premalignant: 3, malignant: 1) desired to bear children. One of the four patients who was diagnosed with malignancy, was a 35 year old nulligravida wishing to bear children with the chief complaint of abnormal uterine bleeding. Endometrial cytology was negative for malignancy, but the very small specimen was subsequently diagnosed as endometrioid adenocarcinoma on pathological examination. Conclusion: We suggest that when masses are found inside the uterine cavity by transvaginal sonography, it is important to carefully examine under sonohysterography and perform pathological examination and treatment using hysteroscopy. Masses should also be examined even if the endometrial cytology is negative for malignancy or the tumor is small, regardless of whether the woman exhibits abnormal uterine bleeding.","PeriodicalId":87313,"journal":{"name":"Journal of pregnancy and child health","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43740397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive retrospective study over a 2 year period from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017. Included in our sample were all pregnant women admitted for trauma during pregnancy in the department of gynecology and obstetric in the University Teaching Hospital Bogodogo of Ouagadougou. Results: We recorded 112 emergency consultations for trauma and pregnancy out of a total of 13,367 gynecoobstetrical consultations, or a frequency of 0.9%. The average age of our patients was 25.9 ± 5 years and the average parity was 3 with extremes of 0 and 8. Housewives accounted for 50% of patients and evacuation was the mode of admission in 74.6%. The etiologies of trauma were dominated by road accidents in 82.6% of cases, falls in 9.8% of cases and brawls in 7.6% of cases. The mean gestational age of onset of trauma was 26.3 ± 7. A notion of polytrauma was found in 4 patients. The fetal prognosis was marked in the 1st quarter by 3 cases of abortion, in the 2nd quarter by 5 cases of intrauterine fetal death and in the 3rd quarter by 10 cases of threatened premature delivery. Conclusion: Trauma during pregnancy is frequent in the UTH-B. The implementation of a national prevention strategy for this association will improve the prognosis of mothers and children. *Corresponding author: Adama Ouattara, Assistant Professor at the Training and Research Unit in Health Sciences (TRU/HS), University Ouaga I Pr Joseph KI-ZERBO, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Tel: +22670112819; E-mail: ouattzangaadama@yahoo.fr Received: October 07, 2018; Accepted: November 15, 2018; Published: November 22, 2018 Citation: Ouattara A, Natacha LB, Smaila O, Alidou P, Aline TS, et al.
