Two years later, Aliette Armel published a book on Marguerite Duras and autobiography. More recently, researchers have focused on the autobiographical dimension of the cinema of Marguerite Duras and on the projection of the self in the paratextual and cinematographic work of the author. Pursuing this work, this study examines the elements that, in connection with the media exposure of the author, deal with the projection of oneself in the films, in particular through the analysis of the incursions of the person of the writer and of her inner circle. Some of these are theatre and music criticism; many are\u0000 chroniques.\u0000 This article selects several of these in which Colette reflects on this very fluid genre. Firstly, she receives advice from a child about writing without an assigned topic. This is a parodic poetics. Secondly, she tells us where she finds her topics: it is in the streets, not in the “factory” that makes the paper. Yet, in an evident paradox, her vehicle for this lesson is a story about crackpots who do not respect this boundary. Thirdly, in another paradox, she wanders in the streets, writing while taking time off from writing. It is an enormous, systematic survey of the public and private mores and institutions of ancient Rome, its cultural history, we would say. Its value was recognized by succeeding scholars (who tended to treat it as a quarry or a challenge for more focused research) and it went through a number of printings before 1559. This article takes the starting point of the Paris edition of 1533 to explore what can be known of the presence and use of the work in France from about 1500 to the 1550s. In contrast, the companion volume devoted to the nautical work of the expedition,\u0000 Navigation et Géographie\u0000 , compiled by Péron’s collaborator Louis Freycinet, has aroused little by way of commentary. No doubt the abundance of technical content has obscured its storyline, yet the fact that the author has chosen to revisit the voyage narrative from a different standpoint is of great interest in itself. To gain insight into Freycinet’s intentions, we examine the various strategies he deploys as he proceeds to construct his own distinct narrative persona. Initially a canon of the Congregation of Sainte-Geneviève, Vallone denounces a Socinian plot led by the directors of the institution. He is persecuted and eventually escapes to Switzerland, then to Germany and finally to Holland, where he arrives in Zwolle at the height of the Leenhof controversy. He embarks on a “metaphysical” defence of Calvinist doctrine but is sharply criticized by Jacques Bernard and sanctioned by the council of the Walloon Church. Decried for frivolousness, superficiality and facility, he did not achieve the academic recognition he sought despite his quarrels with the\u0000 philosophes\u0000 . Obituaries in 1780 spoke of his carelessness and disinclination to revise his work, but people who knew him better asserted correctly that the reverse was the case. Study of his bibliography—a daunting field requiring much more effort—and of his revisions of several of his books has reinforced this view in recent decades. The particular case of\u0000 Les Tourterelles de Zelmis\u0000 , first published in 1765, amended more than once in the subsequent ten years and finally recast in 1780, confirms this view. All were destined for the Île de France. In allowing these goods to be carried on board, the commander was defying the Navy’s strict prohibition against engaging in commerce. It treats the topic, little examined by modern scholarship, of early French maritime dictionaries. Beginning with their emergence in the 1670s, I identify over the next hundred years six nautical dictionaries, of which two are bilingual. Each opens with one or more authorial paratexts—principally some form of preface—which constitute the main object of study here. They exhibit over this period considerable sociological and ideological changes. Its dramatized narrative models a trajectory leading from an inherent potentiality towards a final consecration. Recently, however, critics have challenged this ideal representation and emphasised the exclusions made by some biographers anxious to safeguard male territories and to dismiss women from the artistic field.
