Five feminist science fiction scenarios are identified and discussed. Although the fictional societies are maximally different in terms of size, level of technological development, and organizational complexity, they all exhibit a radical equalitarianism. It is suggested that sex equality is only thinkable in a context of overall equalitarianism. This, in turn, suggests that the most fruitful strategy for improving the condition of women consists in a general effort to level social differences rather than in particularistic strategies addressed only at women. It suggests further that there should be a potential (although at present not actual) natural alliance between the feminist movement, civil liberties movements, and the ecological movement (which can be interpreted as equalitarianism in assessing present vs future needs).</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 1","pages":"Pages 51-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)96358-2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89429439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Shaker women used, maintained, and even invented labor-saving devices, both in their domestic work and their commercial enterprises. The Shaker view toward women and technology emerged from their egalitarian religious principles that placed an equal value upon the lives of women and men. Shaker women invented the buzz saw, cut nails, and a successful revolving oven, and they were knowledgeable about the operation of machinery. Although they worked long hours at their machines, Shaker women emphasized that their lot was far better than that of unfortunate factory women, because they worked for themselves in pleasant surroundings and rotated work assignments frequently. Hard-working, they decried drudgery, and though they opposed capitalism and the factory system, they maintained a Utopian vision of technology as a source of a better American life.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 313-319"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)96515-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79723652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technology, increasingly so in industrialized societies, is male. This means that technology is supported by values of conquest and domination of nature, and pursuit of ‘objectivity’ and ‘rational efficiency’ to the point of irrationality. Integrated with prevailing structures of power, technology grows destructive of human beings and the earth. A feminist perspective can help us move from a hard technology society to a soft technology future in which values such as harmony with nature, subjectivity, co-operation, and non-exploitation become integral to technological development. Three avenues can be explored for ideas and models that can implement a feminist perspective for choices and issues facing our technological future. First, we need to look to the past, and to present pre-industrial cultures, to uncover women's role in technological development. Second, we must look at both the theory and experience of the current feminist movement. And third, we must look to feminist future visions that project alternative technologies and alternative modes of social and econo-political organization. The future technology we seek should be based on a dialectical vision of a creative, dynamic, humanistic technology.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 1","pages":"Pages 65-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)96373-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83930985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
