Although CD30 expression has been described mainly in hematopoietic tissues, several types of nonhematopoietic tumors including embryonic carcinoma and germ‐cell tumors express CD30. We examined CD30 distribution in the testis and epididymis from wild type and CD30‐deficient mice. In the testis, spermatogonia, spermatocytes and Sertoli cells expressed CD30, but not in spermatids. Spermatogonia and spermatocytes near the basement membrane strongly reacted to anti‐CD30. In the epididymis, CD30 expression was exclusively observed in luminal epithelia and some interstitial cells. Taken together, these results show a spatio‐temporal regulation of CD30 expression in mouse testis and epididymis and suggest a possible role of CD30 in spermatogonia and spermatocytes.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"197 - 203"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647751","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 4–1 BB (CD137) T cell molecule is amember of the TNF receptor family and its activation by either 4–1 BB ligand or antibody induces T cell activation and growth. In the present study, administration of anti‐4–1BB mAb induced inhibition of melanoma metastasis. Agonistic anti‐4–1 BB mAb induced not only CD8+4–1BB+ T cells but also CD8+IFN‐γ+ T cell population. In the presence of anti‐CD3 antibody, lymphocytes produced high levels of IFN‐γ and low levels of IL‐4 in anti‐4–1 BB mAb treated group. Exposure of melanoma cells to IFN‐γ induced expression of MHC‐I molecules. Thus, the increase in number of CD8+ T cells and enhanced MHC‐I expression on B16F10 cells by augmented IFN‐γ production in response to anti‐4–1 BB mAb may result in suppression of tumor growth and metastasis.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"117 - 123"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647743","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Psammocinia conulosa n. sp. seems to be close to both P. amodes Cook and Bergquist, 1998 and P. hawere Cook and Bergquist, 1996 on the basis of the skeletal structure. However, these three species are clearly separated by the following differences: Shape of P. amodes is spatulate and thin, with a broad blade narrowing to a semi‐cylindrical stalk; P. hawere forms cups with a shallow excavated bowl, and attached to the substratum by a narrow base. The whole surface of the new species is very finely conulose. Psammocinia ulleungensis n. sp. is similar to P. gageoensis Sim and Lee, 2001 in shape, but this species is easily distinguished from P. gageoensis by the simple skeletal structure.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"139 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647746","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two haplotypes and one haplotype were revealed in cytochrome b gene and control region, respectively. The available sequences of European common otter (L. l. lutra) from GenBank were compared together with those of Korean common otter in order to determine the degree of sequence variation between them. In cytochrome b gene sequences, two haplotypes from Korea and two haplotypes of Europe showed differences in 12 of 1,045 sites. The Tamura‐Nei nucleotide distances between two European haplotypes was 0.10% and those between two Korean haplotypes was also 0.10%, but those between Korean haplotypes and European ones ranged from 0.96% to 1.16%. In the control region, one Korean haplotype and seven European ones showed differences in seven of 300 sites; the Tamura‐Nei distances among seven European haplotypes were 0.34% to 1.01%, but those between Korean haplotype and European ones ranged from 1.01% to 1.69%. Although further molecular and morphological studies with specimens from eastern Asia including Amur region and northeast China are needed, it is possible that the Korean common otter might be closer or identical to the far‐eastern Asian common otter, L. I. amurensis Dybowski.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"231 - 233"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647755","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We previously isolated and characterized a mouse orthologue of HAUSP, mHAUSP. mHAUSP cDNA consisted of 3,312 bp encodes 1,103 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 135 kDa containing highly conserved Cys, Asp (I), His, and Asn/Asp (II) domains. In this study, we carried out site‐directed mutagenesis of 6 conserved amino acids (Cys224, Gln231, Asp296, His457, His465, and Asp482) in Cys box, QQD box, and His box. Interestingly, the conserved Gln 231 was not essential for the catalytic activity of mHAUSP. However, the other conserved amino acids were required for deubiquitinating activity of mHAUSP. We performed isopeptidase assay and confirmed that mHAUSP is able to remove ubiquitin from ubiquitinated substrates. In addition, we observed that mHAUSP induces apoptosis in HeLa cells.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"205 - 212"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647752","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These behaviors were compared by performing the resident‐intruder test (social) as well as the light‐dark transition and open‐field tests (non‐social) for the FVB, C57BL/6, and BALB/c lines of mouse. The three inbred lines showed significant differences in their responses to intruder mice. Three factors, accounting for about 68% of the total variance, were extracted from the scores obtained from the three behavioral tests. The first two major factors are primarily associated with the anxiety‐related behaviors. One includes anxiety behaviors with a locomotive basis, while the other includes defecation measured in both anxiety tests. The third factor explains the three social behaviors, facial investigation, ano‐genital investigation, and following, observed in the resident intruder test, although facial investigation is also moderately associated with the second factor. The results indicate that the behavioral responses to an intruder share a component distinct from anxiety‐related behaviors.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"301 - 306"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647764","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
