Ethiopia has the largest youth population and youth labour force constitutes a fast growing proportion. The objective of this article is to explore the employment status, issues, causes, and possible policy options. The study used both secondary and primary data sources. The study indicated that urban youth unemployment in Ethiopia is fast growing mainly due to the imbalance between the demand and supply sides of the job market. Thus, labour absorption is problematic. Recommendations and possible ways of interventions have also been forwarded.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"41 1","pages":"1-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82666569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differences in the labor market outcomes are observed due to variations in sociodemographic characteristics among the working-age population. The overall findings imply that women and the youth, particularly those below tertiary level of education, are, at any rate, the foremost victims of unemployment who require due emphasis and special attention. Accordingly, some recommendations such as focusing on training & skill formation and stimulating employment opportunities are put forward.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"180 1","pages":"79-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83415796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this connection, the paper attempts to characterize youth unemployment in Ethiopia and reveal its major determinants. Univariate results indicate that the youth in general, including teenager youth and, young adults, those living in urban centres like Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, those with primary and secondary education, as well as female youth face large unemployment spells. From the regression results, we found the prime age male unemployment rate to be a positive significant predictor of youth unemployment rates whereas demographic trends were found to be insignificant.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"14 1","pages":"43-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72729707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Throughout the study period, significantly higher densities of Anopheles pharoensis and An. arabiensis were found in the village with irrigation than in the village without. Canal leakage pools, irrigated fields and irrigation canals were the major sources of Anopheles larvae. Most adult anophelines were found to feed on humans, especially before 22hrs, and up to 1% were infected with malaria parasites. This study demonstrated that due to poor maintenance, irrigation schemes create conducive breeding grounds for malaria vector mosquitoes and hence increase the risk of malaria transmission.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"47 1","pages":"107-134"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90344288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 500 randomly selected households were interviewed from 15 kebeles in five woredas, three each from dega, woina-dega and kolla agroecological zones. In addition, focus group discussions and key informant interviews were conducted in each kebele. Descriptive statistics and ÷2 and F tests were used to summarize quantitative data, while qualitative data were organized and used to augment the quantitative analysis. Results indicate that a majority of farmers perceived climate change as manifested in temperature and rainfall changes, over the past two to three decades. Regarding agricultural impacts, 77% of respondents stated having observed reduction in crop production while 60% observed reduction in the length of crop growing period. Similarly, 79%, 62% and 44% of respondents perceived increased incidence of insects, plant diseases, and weeds, respectively. Also, about 59% of the respondents perceived shift of suitable areas for major crops. The belg season production, in the traditionally belg growing areas, has been almost totally abandoned. A higher proportion of households in dega and kolla areas perceived negative agricultural impacts as compared to those in woina-dega, the difference being statistically significant. Similarly, statistically significant gender-based differences were observed in perception of climate change and its agricultural impacts, where the proportion of females perceiving climate change was lower than that of males. It is concluded that there is a need for identification and promotion of community-based adaptation measures that take into account local perceptions and knowledge of climate change and its multiple impacts.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"53 1","pages":"1-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86897885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used vulnerability indicator method to determine the level of vulnerability of households and social groups. The study showed that half of the sample households are highly vulnerable to impacts of climate change. Among these highly vulnerable households agro-pastoralists comprise the highest proportion (60.5 %) of the highly vulnerable households. .This implies that the pastoral livelihood system is more resilient to climatic shocks and variability compared to that of agro-pastoralism in the study area. Generally, it is pointed out that resort to agro-pastoralism, though forced by local circumstances, seems to be a risky alternative. The problem, therefore, demands further investigation and efforts to create better policy, institution and infrastructure in order to widen opportunities for alternative and supplemental livelihood sources and resources.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"28 1","pages":"61-95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80762945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After obtaining adjusted gross margin values for rain-fed and irrigation systems under different typologies, irrigation’s contribution was calculated to be about 5.7 and 2.5 percent to agricultural and overall GDP during the 2005/06 cropping season. By the year 2009/2010, irrigation’s contribution to agricultural and overall GDP is estimated to grow to about 9 and 3.7 percent, respectively. After relaxing some of the underlying assumptions, the future contribution of irrigation to agricultural GDP will rise to about 12 percent while the contribution to overall GDP will be about 4 percent. Recommendations for enhancing irrigation’s contribution and policy implications for cost recovery and sustainability of irrigation investment are drawn.","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"37 1","pages":"5-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86862387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the survey conducted in four villages covering 200 households. The survey revealed that shallot is the dominant crop, extensively grown by almost 91% of sampled farmers. The mean land area allocated for shallot was 0.28 ha. This occupied 47% of the irrigated land. Shallot has become an attractive cash crop because of rising demand and it has also greater price stability than other irrigated crops. The survey confirmed that farmers earned, on average, Birr 4805.60 per annum from farming, off and non-farming activities. Of which, about 67.8% came from small-scale irrigation, 28.7% from rainfed farming, and the rest from off and non-farm activities. One hectare of irrigated land, on average, generated an income of Birr 6030.80, whereas rainfed farming gave only Birr 1059.82 per hectare. To this effect, income from small-scale irrigation is significantly bigger (P=0.026) than rainfed farming. However, there is still a gap to access fertilizer, improved seeds and land resources to expand small-scale irrigation in the study area. These results pose major challenges for agriculture in the new millennium since access and distribution of resources are imminent for the production of small-scale irrigation farming .","PeriodicalId":84691,"journal":{"name":"Ethiopian journal of development research","volume":"63 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81491343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, natural forests cover a tiny fraction of the country’s total area and these are found in small patches mainly in the southern and southwestern parts. Such a patch of forest is found in Wondo Genet area, and it is owned and managed by four major organizations. The forests of these organizations are, however, disappearing at a fast rate which indicates existence of problems in the management approaches of the Organizations. The general objective of this study was to understand existing forest management approaches of the four organizations and indicate some directions towards a sustainable management of the forests. Data were generated through structured questionnaire survey, semi- structured interview, focus group discussion and field observation methods. Various documents from the organizations were also consulted. The results of the study revealed that the four organizations in the area have generally been following a coercive approach, and none of them has, as a result, been successful in protecting the forests from destruction. Lack of a participatory and well-defined management system, increasing scarcity of agricultural land and forest products, inadequacy of benefits to local people from the organizations and ineffectiveness of local administration system in dealing with illegal forest users were the major reasons for the failure. The study concludes by underscoring the need to devise a participatory forest management approach which aims at the co-existence of local people, forest resources and the organizations in the area.
