Half of the sample were asked to answer questions as they think they would at age 70 and the other half answered according to how they thought an older adult (friend or relative) would answer. Results indicated that although they were optimistic about continued sexual enjoyment in late life, there was also considerable ageism: they expected a considerable decrease in sexual activity along with an increase in sexual problems. Furthermore, their attitudes towards sexual activity in late life were more restrictive and conservative than their current attitudes. The presence of these attitudes in the current cohort of young adults confirms the need for education and communication about sexuality in late life. In addition to these findings there were significant gender differences in current attitudes and behaviors, such as frequency of sexual activity, interest in sex, masturbation, and guilt associated with sex, with men generally endorsing more interest and activity and fewer sex-related problems.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"133 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074393","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What is less clear, and yet more significant, is whether knowledge translates to meaningful behavior change. A 43-item questionnaire was administered to students enrolled in two different, but consecutive, semesters of an undergraduate course in human sexuality. The study utilized a quasi-experimental cohort design and included two construct control measures in the questionnaire. Contrary to the fears generated by critics of sex education, there was no evidence that participating in the course somehow encouraged sexual experimentation. A disappointing finding of the study was that the course did not have significant impact upon students in terms of reducing risk behaviors. An essential element to risk behavior change is threat personalization; most of these students did not perceive themselves to be at risk for contracting any STD, including HIV. Although most of the students did not report current high-risk behaviors, the students did not admit to the risk that they did engender for themselves. A majority did not use condoms with any partners, and most acts of intercourse reported in the previous month were without use of a condom. Students appear to rely on serial monogamy rather than lifetime monogamy for protection, but do not ensure that neither partner is infected prior to intercourse. The course appeared to be much more successful in encouraging students to adopt some health-promoting behaviors than it was in having them give up risk-taking behaviors.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"122 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074392","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most women reported little or no sex education or ways to learn through personal exploration. Sex was not discussed at home. The women's judgments, especially about sex, were consistently devalued by others. Jensen describes how this has been typical of our society in general and how women are hindered from recognizing their own sexual arousal. For these women, information about same-sex orientation was either nonexistent or negative. Jensen's women absorbed an implicit message that all women married-so they did also. Moreover, marriage and deep love between partners belonged only to men-women couples. Jensen seats this tradition firmly within patriarchal ideas, attitudes, and social structure. However, women reported many reasons for marrying, and some of the marriages were satisfying at least sometimes. Most women were not aware of same-sex feelings before marriage, and those who did all ignored or denied them. In establishing their own identity, Jensen's women again found their personal assessments and judgments were often not accepted, not taken seriously, or devalued, especially when at variance with dominant attitudes. They felr confused, \"not OK,\" and somehow \"off\" even when marriage \"felt right at the time\" (p. 70). Jensen tells how the women were channeled into the socially constructed female role, even though some components of the role may have felt alien. Although about half were \"tomboys\" as children, only five \"made early, clear efforts to be different in choices and goals from their families.\" How did these women \"not know\" in regard to personal awareness of lesbian or bisexual status-what did they need in order to \"know\"? In addition to lacks discussed earlier, \"the women revealed a sense of the need to acquiesce to some external authority in response to nearly every transition in their lives\" (p. 114). Jensen notes that these responses \"are typical of an oppressed group\" in our patriarchal culture. Lack of lesbian or bisexual role models also hindered Jensen's women from recognizing a same-sex attraction. Such now-public figures as Martina Navratilova and Ellen DeGeneres lived more or less closeted until recently. And very few of Jensen's interviewees during their youth knew any lesbians personally. Most did not even knew when growing up that lesbians existed as a group. What was necessary for these women to change their lives once they \"knew\"? Although many adolescents conjecture about their sexual identity, Jensen's women did not consciously question their heterosexuality in youth. Most had little sexual experience outside marriage. They did not label their feelings until well after adolescence. When they did realize that their desire to be with women was sexual as well as emotional, they had reached a turning point. Subsequent barriers such as disapproval from family and difficulties finding a lesbian community were eventually overcome. Jensen concludes that ","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"153 - 155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074402","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, Daniluk takes the time to refer her readers to other sources for topics beyond the scope of her book, such as concerns of lesbian and bisexual women, and women with disabilities. She is very much aware of the fact that most literature on female sexuality is based on White, heterosexual, EuropeanAmerican women, and she calls attention to sources on diverse groups of women when available. Options for coping with sexual issues are offered from the perspectives of both the well partner and the partner with Alzheimer's disease. These options are dependent on the length of time since diagnosis and severity of the dementia. Attitudes of adult children are considered. Topics the speaker might include are discussed along with the speaker's own awareness of anxiety about loss, degenerative brain disease, and continuing sexual energy for the well partner. Suggestions for managing appropriate and inappropriate behaviors are offered. Preparing to lose a partner is described as an intimate and spiritual task, especially when one defines intimacy as a deep connection with oneself in the presence of a partner. Providing information and offering specific suggestions are described as supporting the intimacy of partners waiting for a predictable end.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"10 1","pages":"140 - 145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074394","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was a hilarious blend of information and titillation. I first became aware of it when a close friend told me that her husband had seen it, learned from it, and helped her discover new sources of delight. In 2000, I had a similar experience when another friend told me that her partner had read Tom Leonardi's Secrets of Sensual Lovemaking and had become a much better lover. Basically, the book is a detailed and useful description of how to stimulate the G-spot area and help women learn to ejaculate. The style is definitely pornographic, designed to arouse the reader. The information in it is just as useful as the information in the Mitchell brothers' video. But one underlying message in both the video and Leonardi's book is that, with proper stimulation, any woman can. Indeed, Leonardi seems to be obsessed with discovering personally exactly how many women can. In my opinion, the implication that every woman can learn to be G-spot responsive and an ejaculator is both misleading and potentially harmful. It sets up a competitive standard for sexual responsiveness when, in fact, we are all different in our pathways to pleasure. Although much is now known about female ejaculation, we do not know why some women ejaculate and others do not. Nor do we know whether every woman is a potential ejaculator. Thanks to the pioneering work of Gary Schubach (1997), we do know that most of the fluid originates in the bladder but has been transformed into something that is different from ordinary urine. There is another book on the same subject that supplies the same useful information but does so without setting up competitive standards and unrealistic goals for women and their partners. The Good Vibrations Guide: The G-spot, by Cathy Winks, cautions the reader in the introduction, \"Just as there is no 'right way' to cook a meal, there's no 'right way' to experience sexual arousal or orgasm ... This philosophy is particularly relevant to any discussion of the G-spot and female ejaculation.\" Winks' book is a careful blend of historical information, relevant personal anecdotes, sage advice about individual differences, sex-positive messages, and scholarly information. It includes a bibliography and information about where to obtain relevant videos and sexual toys. It does all this without suggesting that the reader might like to run continually from one partner to the next, as Leonardi seems impelled to do. Winks' book contains one historical inaccuracy. It mentions two of the authors of the original G-spot book throughout, but omits me (Alice Kahn Ladas) as the first author except in the references and the notes. Beverly Whipple and John Perry did the seminal research on the subject, but it was I who, together with my husband Harold, conceived of the book and helped to get the G-spot and female ejaculation \"on the map and into the dictionary\" (Ladas, Whipple & Perry, 1982). Both the Leonardi and the Winks b","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"151 - 152"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074400","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study involved a 350-item, 23-page, anonymous questionnaire which was self-administered and returned via postal mail. Subjects reported that acceptance of their bestiality and zoophilia is the most important factor for their sense of well-being. Clinically, it appears that in most cases of true zoophilia, this condition is not treatable; the sexual acting out can be stopped when the person is highly motivated, but the attraction and the desire will always be there. Zoophiles may come to the attention of sex therapists, counselors, and educators for a variety of other reasons. Living a life of secrecy, as many zoophiles do, can lead to many psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation, and suicide ideation. However, many will not reveal their true selves unless they feel they can trust the mental health professional to be confidential, nonjudgmental, open-minded, and accepting. It is therefore imperative to learn more about the phenomena of bestiality and zoophilia so that sex therapists, counselors, and educators can understand zoophiles' therapeutic needs, and be able to discuss these issues with clients and students in a supportive, empathic manner.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"85 - 89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074387","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of psychodynamic couples counseling in a case of this complexity is supported. The author asserts that while the husband may, indeed, have been conflicted about success, the wife suffers more from unresolved loss stemming from early childhood rejection and neglect—and an accumulation of losses in her adult life that revived these old losses. Interactions with her passive-aggressive husband exacerbate her long-standing hostility and depression.
