However, this couple accused one another of having low sexual desire. While the wife admitted her desire problem, she primarily blamed her husband's lack of passion for her decreased libido. The husband denied that he has low sexual desire for his wife. He claimed that he is extremely attracted to her, and that she continues to reject him. The treatment model integrated psychoanalytic conflict theory and psychodynamic systems theory. The hypothesis was that underlying loyalty conflicts emanating from each partner's family of origin have been primarily responsible for the couple's sexual symptoms, and therefore must be resolved in order to help the couple achieve a healthier sex life. Following 5 years of treatment, the couple did become closer and less volatile. They have also achieved great financial success. However, their sex life has not prospered to the couple's satisfaction; thus they have decided to continue treatment.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"71 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074385","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1948, Kinsey found that for men there are close to 10 times as many who had engaged in bisexual behavior or have evinced bisexual interest as compared to those who were exclusively homosexual. Women had similar ratios, though their total number was smaller than for men. Because of the difficulty of defining bisexuality, Williams interviewed only people who had had at least one sexual contact with both an opposite-sex partner and same-sex partner in the previous 2 years before his interview. This decision, of course, limits inquiry about people who do in fact have dual sexual attraction but have not acted on it recently. But as long as the author describes his criteria for his population inclusion, future researchers can duplicate his findings. He found his volunteers mostly through ads he placed in various newspapers and periodicals as well as at talks and at the Bisexual International Conference held in Boston in 1998. The interviews showed that the bisexuals created an organized way of thinking and behaviors that contrast with heterosexual and homosexual values and behaviors, and which created a \"bisexual schema.\" It is noteworthy that the study participants showed a consistently open and nonjudgmental pattern to life events. In Chapter 3, Williams discusses the actual sexual practices of the participants. These included kissing, petting, masturbation, cunnilingus, fellatio, vagjnal and anal sexual intercourse, oral-anal sex, sadomasochism, use of \"toys,\" \"finger fucking,\" and \"fisting.\" He divies these acts into passive and active activities. He also goes into detail about the people's sexual fantasies and discusses the differences between sexual and romantic fantasies. James Weinrich and I conducted a similar study about sexual practices of 1,800 men and women of all sexual orientations. Our findings are now in press; but suffice it to say that although there were some similarities in our findings regarding how bisexuals ranked the pleasure of the various sex acts, because of our much larger study population there were a number of differences. For example, in the Williams study, vaginal intercourse received the highest score in desire for that sexual activity among both males and females, while in our study it was ranked behind fellatio, cunnilingus, and masturbation. On the other hand, the finding that men showed a greater predilection for anal activities compared to women was seen in both studies. With respect to advantages and disadvantages of dual sexual attraction, Williams' participants reported the main advantages to be pride and flexibility, while the main disadvantages were the discrimination and prejudice shown by both the heterosexual and homosexual communities. The fourth chapter deals with the response to AIDS. Though bisexuals as a group have often been accused of spreading the virus to heterosexuals,","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"152 - 153"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074401","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A sample of 147 male undergraduates completed a battery of measures, including a role-play test, designed to assess several dimensions of social behavior (i.e., assertiveness, problem solving, heterosocial skill, skill in simulated contraceptive interactions) and contraceptive/prophylactic use (i.e., engagement in contraceptive-related social behaviors, enactment of the component behaviors comprising competent condom use, consistency of contraceptive and condom use). Overall, a strong relationship between social behavior and both the consistency and quality of condom and contraceptive use was found. Individuals who reported engaging in more contraceptive-related social behaviors tended to use condoms, and other forms of contraception, more consistently. In addition to using condoms more consistently, the results indicated that these males also used condoms more competently, that is, they endorsed a higher frequency of participation in the component behaviors associated with using a condom. Inspection of the social skill measures indicates that the relationship is complex and difficult to interpret. Two dimensions of social skill (assertiveness, problem solving) were found to be inversely related to the consistent use of condoms. In contrast, the contraceptive role-play performances were positively associated with the consistency of condom use. The role-play measure's positive relationship to condom use may result from the fact that it assesses skill in specific social situations that more closely resemble those experienced by condom users rather than more trait-like dispositional variables.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"90 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074388","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seven focus groups were conducted with 17 young fathers in order to identify specific curricula components. The discussions were tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. Young fathers identified the most needed curricula components to enable responsible fatherhood. This included human sexuality knowledge and skills as well as employment. Twelve of the fathers who subsequently enrolled in the program completed a behavioral risk assessment. Their behavioral profiles were consistent with the needs they identified. Involving young fathers in selecting curriculum content can be instrumental in tailoring educational programs to meet the unique needs of this group.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"100 - 105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074389","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
