The word myth, as used here, is defined by Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary as “an unproved collective belief that is accepted uncritically and is used to justify a social institution,” such as a sexual value system. Using an established philosophical distinction between sexual values derived from a fixed worldview (cosmology or Weltanschauung) and from a process worldview, the history of sexuality in the Judaic and Christian traditions, and current sociological data, the author challenges the validity of five myths associated with what is commonly proclaimed as “traditional American religious values.” These beliefs focus on the moral unacceptability of premarital sexual relationships; divorce and remarriage; alternatives to sexually exclusive marriage; abortion, Mifepristone (RU 486), and embryonic stem-cell research; and the dissociation of procreation and sexual intercourse. Recognizing that family physicians have an important role to play, an intensive interactive case-based, 1-day educational program was developed and run throughout Canada. The course included a precourse needs assessment to prepare physicians for the program and a postcourse reflective component offered 6 months after the program. The impact of the program was assessed by comparing pre- and postcourse questionnaire data which queried physicians' comfort with history taking, knowledge of male sexual dysfunction, and their usual management strategies. The course was run in 21 Canadian centers from January 1997 to May 1999 for family physicians, general practitioners, and specialists. There was a statistically significant difference between pre- and postcourse comfort scores. At the 6-months post course, physicians reported providing more care themselves and referring fewer patients for ED. The McNemar test indicated all therapeutic treatments were used by more physicians at the time of the postcourse measure. Results from studies indicate that exposure to and interaction with gay men and lesbians via a college human sexuality course can decrease homophobia levels. More specifically, it has been demonstrated that educational interventions such as panels of gay individuals and information from textbooks, lectures, and classroom discussions serve to positively transform attitudes toward homosexuality. The purpose of this study was to replicate and expand our knowledge in this area. This investigation was designed to examine changes in students' levels of homophobia, erotophobia, and sexual conservatism in relation to educational interventions. A total of 109 participants from a large Midwestern university completed the following questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire, the Sexual Opinion Survey, the Derogatis Information subscale, the Derogatis Attitude subscale, the Homophobia scale, and the Bern Sex Role Inventory. Results revealed that students' homophobia, erotophobia, and sexual conservatism levels were significantly less after participation. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceived long-term effect, if any, of a high school comprehensive sexuality education course. Participants were former students who graduated from high school between 1980 and 1995 and took a comprehensive sexuality education course during their senior year. Three sets of data collected through a Likert scale, short-answer questionnaire, and personal interviews were triangulated to look at participants' descriptions of the impact of the sexuality education course. Findings suggest that participants believe their high school sexuality course had a long-term impact on their lives. Themes observed through each level of data collection included self-exploration, increased self-efficacy relating to skills of sexual health, increased knowledge, and perceived increased comfort dealing with issues of sexuality. Participants reported that candid discussions within an interactive setting where students' beliefs and opinions were valued, teachers demonstrating nonjudgmental attitudes that respect all students, and the inclusion of strategies such as the use of guest speakers, journal writing, group discussions, videos, and role plays enhanced their learning. Sexuality education within the school has the potential to encourage lifelong application to sexual health, not just limited focus on eliminating negative outcomes for teenagers.
