Differences between subgroups within orthodox Judaism can be substantial, especially regarding attitudes toward sexuality, reproduction, and modesty in behavior, speech, and dress. These factors can influence treatment and need to be understood. Traditional restrictions on intimate contact during portions of the menstrual cycle have the potential to enhance sexual intimacy, but may necessitate modifications of therapy technique to accommodate these guidelines. The rabbi has an important role in the treatment of orthodox patients, often serving as a culture broker, facilitating referrals and treatment. Orthodox patients view sexuality as one component of a complex matrix of values, traditions, and laws that give meaning and spirituality to all aspects of life, a perspective that may differ substantially from the prevailing attitudes of the general culture. This religious context must be made explicit and explored during therapy to avoid conflicts between therapy technique and Jewish law, build trust between the patient and the therapist, and maximize the engagement of the patient in treatment.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"67 1","pages":"267 - 271"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074432","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59229798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, motor and sexual side effects have often interfered with compliance with treatment. Since clozapine was reintroduced as an atypical neuroleptic, this study investigated its possible sexual side effects on nine schizophrenic patients compared to nine matched controls. Subjects completed questionnaires whose results indicated that clozapine alters ejaculatory function, primarily in the form of a decreased ejaculatory volume. Other sexual areas did not seem affected by medication and patients exhibited relatively good adaptation to their sexual lives. The results suggest that counseling should be provided to increase compliance with treatment and to provide additional support on various aspects of medication as well as on the disease itself.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"334 - 339"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074441","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59229531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is some evidence that a substantial percentage of heterosexual and homosexual men have participated in group masturbation as boys. Girls, who masturbate with lower incidence and less frequently than boys, appear to form pairs more often than groups for masturbation. At least 40 organized adult men's masturbation clubs exist worldwide. Probably many more small, informal male groups flourish less publicly. Adult women's recreational sex groups do not appear to focus on masturbation per se. A few mixed-gender adult masturbation clubs exist. Conjectures are given about participation by males versus females, number and characteristics of participants, and trends.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"340 - 346"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074442","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59229591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His ideas were influenced by some of the ascetic beliefs of the time as well as his own personal experiences. The medical tradition was different, emphasizing sexuality as a biological fact and as a necessary and pleasurable aspect of life. In general, however, medical views were descriptive and not prescriptive. In the 18th century development of new medical theories emphasizing homeostasis seemed to give support to the Augustinian views and there was an outpouring of books about the dangers of sex. It was not until the end of the 19th century, with the discovery of bacteria as major causal factor of disease, that scientific views challenged the traditional religious assumptions. Public attitudes and opinions slowly changed to more positive attitudes about sexual matters. Gradually religious views also reinterpreted to conform to the new findings.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"254 - 258"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074430","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose was to identify perceived need, to quantify support and readiness, and ultimately to assist theological institutions with the process of sharing, implementing, or restructuring sexuality education and formation efforts within their professional education. To determine how and whether clergy students are being prepared to address sexuality concerns of their congregants, data were sought from all 183 graduate-level seminaries accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the US. Sixty-nine schools (37%) responded. Questions included: What educational and developmental experiences related to human sexuality are currently being offered? What sexuality-related experiences were offered in the past and if no longer offered, why not? How important is sexuality education as an aspect of formation within the mission of the seminary? How ready is the institution to share, implement, or restructure sexuality education experiences? Open-ended responses indicated that sexuality content is most often combined with other curricular offerings, especially courses in pastoral counseling and ethics. Only 47% of respondents indicated their institution currently offers a stand-alone sexuality course, whereas 85% said that sexuality content is embedded in other courses. Diffusion of innovations theory provided the framework for ranking institutional readiness.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"301 - 309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074436","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59229400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
