This dispute took the form of physical and psychological harassment of the women, wide-open public debate in the community, in the press, and on television, federal mediation efforts, and two lawsuits. This article analyzes this dispute using Mary Daly's seven patterns of the sado-ritual syndrome (Daly 1978). The analysis examines the ideological and moral standpoints of the participants, the issues of “blaming the victim” and scape-goating, the development of the conflict from a dispute between neighbors to the involvement of international media, national activists and the Clinton Administration, the transformation of the conflict from a political to legal dispute, the representations of the groups within the community and the media, the effect of public opinion on the dispute, and th...","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"17 1","pages":"17-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V17N03_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66679706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, I investigate their views of the ways the role of woman and the role of legislator affect career success and effectiveness, as well as the collective implications of those perceptions. The theoretical framework used to ground the empirical findings concerns women's status as a political minority at the elite level as well as outsiders and newcomers to those roles. I conclude that women in political office face the need for alternative role development that neither replicates the male model nor relies upon traditional female private sphere roles.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"17 1","pages":"27-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V17N01_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66679184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, data from a sample of 110 Master of Divinity students at a Presbyterian seminary are used to compare the attitudes toward abortion of men and women. It is found that the men are more conservative on this issue than the general public, while the women are more liberal than average. This may reflect a differential “selection” into the ministry of men and women, in terms of values about feminist issues. The increase in women in ministry may thus have an influence on the church's position on abortion and similar issues.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"17 1","pages":"1-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V17N03_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66679586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet the \"new faces\" in the political elite did not include women's faces. Why? To answer this question the paper will deal with women's groups strategies. The women's group related to the large parties did not read the political map correctly with respect to the strategies to be used in the newly democratized electing bodies within the parties. They also did not read the political map correctly with regard to identifying the central objective of the electing bodies within which their own objective could have been integrated.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70599598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The differences among the presidents are discussed in terms of the number of women they appointed, their selection process, and eligible pool, partisan and ideological considerations. Career and educational background characteristics of women judges appointed by Carter, Reagan, G.H.W. Bush, and Clinton are compared and clear differences emerge. The study concludes that women's paths to the federal bench have not changed much in the last 25 years and that women appointees appear to have “climbed” a judicial ladder that men have not.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"26 1","pages":"109 - 129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014v26n03_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66694195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that the power of this ideology continues into the contemporary law of gendered violence, as evidenced most recently by the Supreme Court's decision in United States v. Morrison (2000). We find that public/private ideology offers men a “violence shield”: freedom from scrutiny that enables gendered violence to thrive. Although gendered violence is now on the public agenda, these crimes remain shielded from scrutiny because they are associated with the private sphere. We suggest that feminist activists concentrate on undermining these ideological roots when crafting strategies to combat violence against women.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"26 1","pages":"57 - 83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014v26n03_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66694184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the recent literature, differences in the availability of resources and civic skills are usually invoked as an explanation for this pattern. This theory focuses primarily on adult behavior and has not as yet been investigated among young people, for whom we can assume that resources are distributed more equally. In this article, we examine gender differences in the anticipation of political participation among American fourteen-year-olds, building on the 1999 International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement study (n = 2,811). First, the results show that girls at this age mention even more actions they intend to engage in than do boys, so clearly the gender gap with regard to the level of participation has not yet emerged at that age. Second, we observe distinct patterns with regard to the kinds of actions favored, with girls being drawn more towards social movement-related forms of participation than boys, and with boys favoring radical and confrontational action repertoires as compared to girls. The results are important for the reconceptualization of the concept of political participation as well as for theories that explain the gender gap.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"26 1","pages":"1 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014v26n03_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66694175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cross-sectional survey data collected from 1960 through 2000 was stacked to create a longitudinal research design. The survey data included open-ended questions assessing what issues respondents considered most important for the nation. Results indicate that class and racial differences among women are not inevitable when it comes to prioritizing poverty. These group cleavages emerge as significant precisely as more affluent women, and white women, disproportionately enjoyed the benefits won by second-wave organizing. The political ramifications of organizing's “double-edged sword” are discussed for public policy and women's activism.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"26 1","pages":"25 - 56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014v26n03_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66694179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The numbers of women executives, countries they have led, and the types of governmental systems in which they came to power are analyzed. A main focus is their political and educational backgrounds. Findings suggest that the number of women making it to executive office is few but varied geographically. Women executives have diverse education and political backgrounds. An important springboard to office in Asia and Latin America has been women's familial ties to important political leaders. Even these women are more diverse than expected in terms of background and, in particular, political experience.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"26 1","pages":"108 - 85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V26N03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66694188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
