These studies have painted a simplistic picture of how the mass media influences the electorate. Using the 1990 Australian National Election as a test case, results show that while the mass media have a significant impact on political attitudes and voting behavior, especially among respondents who viewed the political debates, this effect is specifically restricted to males. Thus, the mass media do have a direct effect on political outcomes, and this process appears to be an exclusively male phenomenon. Several explanations are discussed to account for this finding.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V16N04_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66679555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two groups were observed as having not only different ends in view but different organizational principles, different styles of lobbyinh, and different degrees of success. The antifeminists belong to a number of overlapping conservative groups; however they chose to present themselves not as members of their groups, but as concerned individuals, even though they conceived and executed group strategies. The right-wing women had considerable more experience in and knowledge of the political system and its milieu than the feminists and they expended more time per person than the feminists on the textbook criticism process, dealing with individuals and procedures intensively at every step. After developing the cost-benefit approach to \"inclusive fitness,\" and showing that it soes not entail genetic reductionism, differences in male and female gender roles are explored from an evolutionary perpective. Human societies have varied from the equality and complementary of the two sexes among hunter-gatherers like the !Kung to the radical inequality of females in hypergynous systems like that of traditional India. Two enviromental variables-social stratification and the reliability of resources-are critical in the emergence of the attitudes and practices conventionally described as \"male chauvinism.\" In industrial societies of relative abundance and security, such discrimination against females is shown to be an anachromism correlated with those social strata character...","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V03N02_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66671662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the tradition of Tocqueville and, more recently, Robert Putnam we examine women's high school associational life to explore the factors that distinguish women who are active in their communities and politics from those women who are nonparticipants. Comparing women's participation in high school activities with such life experiences as marrying, working, and having children, our analysis of the panel study of the Senior Class of 1972 underscores the importance of women's participation in high school for their subsequent levels of civic and political engagement.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V19N02_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66681954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It now includes humanitarian relief, human rights monitoring, civil policing, demobilization, elections, collection of evidence for war crimes trials, and sometimes economic and institutional development. Its supporters acknowledge the existence of evil and the need for violence as some peace activists do not. Its participants, though, are not distanced from the application of force as are strategic decision-makers. Peacekeeping is an experimental process which seeks to use a potential for force, the (near) renunciation of force, and citizen consent to forge a peace which does not require third-party supervision. Civilians and women are essential participants in this new peacekeeping, but so far they have mostly left the field to the military and to male officials.","PeriodicalId":83535,"journal":{"name":"Women & politics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J014V18N01_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66681000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
