To deal with these problems we require a holistic model of the operating system which includes the concept of life. This is defined on the basis of energy internally dissipated in the system, when it is treated as open and energy-transforming. The holistic model of a system can be very useful for the space-time-life simulation of its condition at the design stage and for a model-based diagnosis at the life stage. This procedure will substantially increase the reliability of operating systems and reduce the total life cycle costs.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"53-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850100105","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50990475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The way to a dialogue is opened up when two partners acknowledge each other and are ready to discuss a problem (or theme) by means of exchanging ideas. Conversation may be placed under the heading of diologue when it can be shown that only the former, but not the latter, is executable by a machine in that (1) the subject is unrestrictedly involved and (2) language appears in such a way that it has to be accepted as gift (and cannot be handled as an instrument serving man`s purpose). Thereby, and by his lecturing activities, he has become a unique figure in maintaining a kind of unity of the field of Cybernetics, well in accord with Wiener’s view (“control and communication in the animal and the machine”; cf[26]). And that, with fresh ideas, sometimes very personal, sometimes very general, and always very interesting. In this subjective review of a fragment of Pask´s writings, notably within cybernetics, we will, in part, try to account for some of his earlier insights into how we judge the behaviour of an artefact (machine) in relation to that of a living organism (animal). And, partly, for his later-conceived conversation theory. Some problems revealed in the latter theory, like how we-in-a-conversation can represent a real behaviour, may well connect back to Pask´s earlier studies into the problem whether we can produce artefacts (including thought models) of our behaviours as living beings. It has been proposed that a properly developed systemology would constitute an applied philosophy, highly relevant to a constructive re-vision, not only of the sciences but also of human affairs. The problem of paradigm exhaustion is emphasized. The structure of the first four Kondratievs is contrasted with that inferred for a possible fifth. The main driving forces and constraints characteristic of a fifth Kondratiev recovery are discussed. These are new technologies, job creation, new sources of energy, environmental constraints, and availability of financial capital. It is concluded that many of the ingredients for a recovery are present but that there are countervailing factors as well. Further, the contextual field of forces in which the Kondratiev is embedded is now more turbulent, and a Kondratiev recovery would have to be part of a radical transformation in social, economic, and environmental thinking. 26 refs.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"13 3","pages":"41-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850100404","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50990741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A methodology for its introduction, incorporation and further development within the social unit, together with a draft family Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, are suggested. The methodology is intended for those with lay appreciation of systems design in the hope that this will speed the diffusion of design competence. The word ‘family’ is interpreted broadly, and the methodology is seen as applicable to a wide range of small social units and cultural settings, e.g. club, association, learning or development group where a form of contract which recognizes members' interdependence, and which generates commitment, participation and sustainability, would be desirable. An adaptation of the Declaration currently evolving within the International Systems Institute is described.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"46 5","pages":"201-208"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850120304","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50991651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
