Experimental results demonstrate that YOLO11-RLN outperforms YOLO11, achieving 7.338%, 5.392%, 7.862%, and 7.019% improvements in precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50-75, respectively. Statistical significance analysis confirms the robustness of these improvements.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"312-324"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144910650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improving the equity of green space accessibility will help support the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. However, existing analyses of accessibility to green spaces have not considered the socioeconomic disadvantages of residential communities (disadvantages at the origin points) or the age-friendliness of the destinations, limiting their applicability for planning purposes. This study assessed age-friendly green space accessibility and equity among older residents by developing an optimized two-step floating catchment area model to quantify per capita green space availability. The results showed that only 17.06% of older adults have access to more than 5.5 m<sup>2</sup> of green space per person, and 45.17% cannot reach green space within 10 min. The average Gini index for the green space of the communities studied is 0.807. Accessibility and equity follow a central–peripheral disparities pattern, with a trade-off relationship among community disadvantage severity, accessibility, and equity. Mountainous green spaces pose greater barriers for older adults, underscoring the critical role of small community green spaces in meeting their needs. The age-friendly renewal of small mountainous green spaces should improve accessibility, amenities, and scenic aesthetics.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"280-293"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144905964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is little research on whether the target audiences are familiar with the STEM acronym, which specific STEM subject areas they associate with it, and the impact of these associations. We investigated students’ familiarity with the STEM acronym and whether their associations of the STEM acronym with different STEM subject areas—mediated by their value beliefs—affected their academic elective intentions for STEM study programs and activities and their STEM choices of curriculum profiles at school. In a sample of eighth‐grade students (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 1163; 611 girls; 13.7 years), 72% reported familiarity with the STEM acronym. Students associated mathematics most strongly with the STEM acronym, followed by physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, and engineering. The subject areas students associate with the STEM acronym affected their academic elective intentions for STEM and their STEM choices at school. These relations were mediated by students’ value beliefs and differed for the subject areas associated with the STEM acronym and by gender. The consequences of our findings for tailoring STEM campaigns to ensure their effectiveness and a more diverse and inclusive STEM community are discussed.","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"298 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":5.2,"publicationDate":"2025-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144900661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reports the evidence generation and delivery processes undertaken in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Senegal in support of bouillon fortification discussions. We identified stakeholder-specific evidence needs, tapped existing data and new data to generate that evidence, and packaged and delivered it to stakeholders. Evidence needs included the levels of micronutrient inadequacy (with/without existing and other hypothetical fortification programs), the potential contributions of bouillon fortification to reduce micronutrient inadequacy and (for some micronutrients) child mortality, the cost and cost-effectiveness of bouillon fortification programs, and the contribution of bouillon to total sodium intake. Evidence on technical and commercial issues was also required. Stakeholder-specific understanding and ownership of evidence was essential; achieving both required continual interaction and trust. New bouillon evidence delivery channels were developed in each country and linked to existing decision-making bodies. A shared vocabulary and understanding of issues and evidence, and the continual innovative redelivery of evidence, were critical to success; persistence and innovations in evidence delivery paid dividends. Concrete policy changes regarding bouillon fortification were secured in Nigeria; policy discussions continue in Burkina Faso and Senegal.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"224-241"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/nyas.70006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144900720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patterns of cytosine methylation vary predictably with age in many organisms, offering a valuable means to investigate differences in patterns of aging at the molecular level. We tested sex differences in cytosine methylation across 14 bat species and compared patterns of age-associated variation. Sex differences were overrepresented on the X chromosome, showing a strong pattern of female hypermethylation within promoter regions. Sex- and age-associated differences in methylation were nonrandomly distributed with respect to proximity to putative sex hormone receptor binding sites, with sites hypermethylated in males and females tending to be underrepresented near androgen and estrogen receptor binding sites, respectively. Across species, we observed that the relative steepness of male versus female slopes of age-associated variation appeared to be associated with the strength of precopulatory sexual selection, with especially strong trends toward male-biased age-associated slopes in two harem-polygynous species that exhibit female-biased longevity. Our results offer insights into how patterns of methylation differ across sexes and ages, and raise intriguing questions for future research, such as whether sex differences in molecular aging reflect sex-biased longevity, for which records in bats are sparse.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"115-128"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/nyas.70021","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144900662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most studies have explored the relationship between brain structure and attention at the cortical level, subcortical structures remain largely overlooked. Leisure activities, such as musical practice, are thought to promote brain reorganization and help preserve cognitive function in aging. However, evidence for such effects at the subcortical level remains limited. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the relationship between age, subcortical gray matter, and attentional control in amateur musicians and nonmusicians. A total of 108 adults (20–88 years) were recruited, including 34 singers, 37 instrumentalists, and 37 active nonmusicians. Participants completed an auditory selective attention task and a visual inhibition task. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images were acquired to examine the relationship between subcortical volumes and attentional measures. Our results indicate that aging is associated with worse attentional control and smaller subcortical volumes. While no group differences in subcortical volume were observed, significant interactions emerged between musical activity and subcortical volume in relation to attentional control, particularly in inhibition. Notably, in singers, greater musical experience and smaller subcortical volumes were linked to better inhibition. These results refine our understanding of subcortical contributions to attentional control in aging musicians and nonmusicians.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"167-188"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/nyas.70023","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144900663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This convergent mixed-methods self-report study investigated how recreational cannabis users experience auditory stimulation and music in particular. A total of 104 participants completed an online questionnaire, 15 of which were selected to participate in an optional semi-structured interview. Quantitative analyses showed that listening to music was the most commonly reported activity while high, indicated by 45% of participants. Participants reported significantly greater hearing sensitivity (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) and state absorption in music (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) while high compared to sober. Higher trait absorption in music was associated with greater state absorption in music while high. Qualitative thematic analysis identified four main themes: (1) altered cognitive processes and reinterpretations, (2) auditory perceptual effects from new sensations to sensory overload, (3) emotional openness, sensitivity, and regulation, and (4) embodiment, immersion, and out-of-body dissociation. Focusing on the operating characteristics of China VI emission standard hybrid buses, we apply these evaluation metrics to analyze the performance of series hybrid buses under different routes, models, and fuel types. The results indicate that the hybrid buses operating in suburban areas exhibit 31% lower energy consumption and about 35% lower fuel consumption compared to those in urban areas. Although liquefied natural gas hybrid buses—owing to their higher weight—show the highest emission factor among all tested buses, they demonstrate the lowest NO<i><sub>X</sub></i> emissions per unit vehicle weight per kilometer (0.15 g/(t km)). Additionally, suburban diesel hybrid buses exhibit lower NO<i><sub>X</sub></i> emissions per unit weight than their urban counterparts. Current brain-targeted pharmacotherapies are often ineffective or poorly tolerated. Emerging evidence highlights the gut microbiome's role in influencing neurobiological and behavioral responses to drugs of abuse. This diverse microbial community communicates with the brain via neuroactive metabolites, immune modulation, and peripheral nervous system signaling. In SUDs, gut-derived metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, tryptophan derivatives, neurotransmitters, bile acids, and immune molecules directly affect drug and alcohol use behaviors, as demonstrated in clinical and preclinical studies. Shared mechanisms across substances suggest these metabolites modulate addiction-like phenotypes. This review summarizes the role of gut microbiome-derived metabolites in addiction, their mechanisms of action, and neurobehavioral effects. It also discusses current methodologies for studying gut metabolites in SUDs and identifies critical research gaps. Advancing our understanding of the gut–brain axis may reveal novel therapeutic targets, paving the way for more effective SUDs treatments.</p>","PeriodicalId":8250,"journal":{"name":"Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences","volume":"1551 1","pages":"93-114"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144851220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
