{"title":"[History of the discovery of Helicobacter pylori].","authors":"György Miklós Buzás","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"The discovery of Helicobacter pylori is one of the greatest achievements in the modern history of gastroenterology, which led to fundamental changes in our approach to the pathogenesis and treatment of peptic ulcer disease. However, the road towards accepting the role of these spiral bacteria in the pathogenesis of certain diseases of the upper digestive tract was long and marked with repeated false interpretations and misunderstandings, even when--in retrospect--many times several researchers were very near to the discovery. The first observations concerning the presence of bacteria in animal/human stomachs dates from the dawn of medical microbiology, when the bacterial etiology of some other diseases (tuberculosis, cholera, dysentery, syphilis) was ascertained. In spite of many bacteriological, experimental, biochemical and therapeutic observations, the causative role of the microorganism in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer was not recognised even in the case of most elegant demonstrations. Sometimes, head-strong thinking and excessive belief in opinion leaders statements set back the bacterial research. The identification of Helicobacter pylori by Barry J. Marshall and J. The same applies, by the way, to many other branches of alternative medicine, e.g. mesmerism, homoeopathy, hydropathy, anthroposophical medicine. This historical fact provides more than just an excuse to start with a survey of the historiography of homeopathy in German-speaking countries. The first part of the paper focuses on 19th-century attempts at a history of homoeopathy, reflecting the wish to establish a corporate identity among the adherents of the new art of healing. Early examples are books by prominent homoeopathic doctors on the origins and recent history of homoeopathy in German lands. A look at their motives will give us a notion of the response of the fringe medicine to a wide ranger of attacks of orthodox physicians and medical historians who saw progress in the field of the new \"scientific\" medicine only and who shared the values and ideologies of the medical establishment. The second part of the paper - which covers the period from the turn of the century to the end of World War II - examines the first attempts by professional medical historians as well as amateurs to write about the rise and fall of homeopathy in Germany. The ways of addressing the people changed along with the centuries: the press was the right medium to inform wide masses of different classes of people in the 19th century. The feuilleton was one of the popular styles used by the press, nevertheless it grew out of it's classical frames, and gained the most various themes during the second half of the century. So the feuilletons on natural sciences written by medical doctors about health issues appeared as well. These writings represent the natural sciences' knowledge of the comfortable and popular sort of positivism and national program spanning from Zsigmond Kemény to Eötvös, where the reader has to feel it's practical use in the everyday life. It is the scientific knowledge that is interpreted through these feuilletons on the first place, but on the other hand a specific way of reception of natural sciences can be traced by them. Their particularity lies at the intersection of the most possible subjective description of the objective facts: possible historical readings of medical, literary and social sciences. {"title":"Stephan Környey's contribution to the study of encephalitides.","authors":"Georg Gosztonyi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"A considerable part of Környey's work deals with the problem of encephalitides. HIs interest in this topic was roused by Heinrich Pette and in collaboration they studied the histopathology and pathogenesis of experimental and human poliomyelitis. On the basis of their findings they advocated the neural spread of the poliomyelitis virus. THey described the distribution of the poliovirus within the nervous system, its close affinity to the voluntary motor system and analysed the influence of the portal of entry and special neurotropism on the development of the distribution pattern of the process. THe encephalitic process changes as a function of time; the significance of this observation was expressed in the concept of the time factor. Környey designated the affinity of the poliovirus towards the neurons among the cellular components of the nervous tissue as gangliocytotropism. Based on his observation, he characterized the features of neural spread of virsuses and the selective character of this spread within the central nervous system. THe study of two other polioencephalitides with predilectional involvement of the brain stem, Borna disease and tickborne encephalitis, allowed him further pathogenetic assessments. Környey described the first manifestation of subacute panencephalitis in the Carpathian basin. He devoted special attention to the clinical and neuropathological analysis of various forms of leukoencephalomyelitides and closely followed the development of the principle of neuro-allergy (Pette) and the change in the pathogenetic view of these diseases.
