What was not expected was that so much of this information should consist of bitter criticism and empassioned invective directed against leading personalities in the social and intellectual circles of Budapest and Hungary, particularly in the Jewish community of which Goldziher himself was a leading member. The contrast between the image of the dispassionate and meticulous researcher presented to the public in so many of Goldziher's seminal studies on the religion and culture of Islam, and that of the outraged and sorrowing diarist manifest in the Tagebuch, was most striking.","PeriodicalId":81727,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland. The Mamlūk institution in early Muslim India 早期穆斯林印度的Mamlūk制度

Sām, made their first major breakthrough into Hindūstān in the 1190s, they brought with them two institutions that had long since taken root in the Islamic world. One was the iqṭā' or assignment of land or its revenue, in some cases in return for military service (sometimes misrepresented as “fief” on the Western European model). The other was the mamlūk, or military slave. Mamlūk status, it should be stressed, bore none of the degrading connotations associated with other types of slavery: mamlūks – generally Turks from the Eurasian steppelands – were highly prized by their masters, receiving both instruction in the Islamic faith and a rigorous training in the martial arts, and were not employed in any menial capacity. The mamlūk institution, whose origins go back to the first century of Islam, came into vogue from the first half of the third/ninth century, as the ‘Abbasid Caliphs built up a corps of Turkish mamlūk guards and their example was followed, with the disintegration of their empire, by the various autonomous dynasties that sprang up in the provinces. Turkish slave officers themselves went on to found dynasties, as in the case of the Tulunids and the Ikhshidids in Egypt and the Ghaznawids in the eastern Iranian world. The institution surely entered upon its heyday in the seventh/thirteenth century, with the military coup of 648/1250 in Cairo: a group of mamlūk officers overthrew the last Ayyubid sultan of Egypt and inaugurated a regime in which slave status was the essential qualification for high military and administrative office.","PeriodicalId":81727,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland. In the case of the more elaborately illustrated manuscripts, which demand often disproportionally long entries, some entries have benefited from thesis work by students of the Universities of Rome and Venice towards a degree in Oriental Studies. Where these have not been available for consultation, as in the case of a Khamsa of Nizaml, Shlraz c. 1540-80 in the Braidense in Milan (pp. 176-7, Fondo Castiglioni 22) Piemontese has limited himself to brief preliminary identifications. His remarks on condition are also relevant notably to cases of rebinding and consequent disordering of the sequence. These, however, bring up the curious fact that the most common damage to the paper is water-staining. Given the primitive interior lighting available to Muslim scribes and scholars one would prima facie expect burns or oil-stains from candles or lamps which had been knocked over to be far commoner. How did the manuscript get to the water or the water to the manuscript? Perhaps it was an Italian fire-brigade.","PeriodicalId":81727,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland. Birrell","doi":"10.1017/S0035869X00109037","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1017/S0035869X00109037","url":null,"abstract":"This book marks a new departure in the study of traditional Chinese poetry. The author has subjected four comparatively long shift-lyric poems to an analysis specifically of their narrative features. For all its simplicity, this imaginative approach produces interesting insights into these familiar pieces. They are \"Poem of Affliction\" (Peifen shift) by the late Han poetess, Ts'ai Yen, \"Song of Everlasting Sorrow\" (Chiang hen ko) and \"Ballad of the P'i-P'a {Fi-p'a hsing) by Po Chii-i, and \" Song of the Lady of Ch'in \" (Ch'in fu yiri) by Wei Chuang, both of the midto late T'ang. The fact that the first piece dates from the late Han and the last three from the T'ang means that the title of this book is a misnomer. A more accurate designation would be: A Study of Major Narrative Features in Four Chinese Shih-Poems of the Late Han and T'ang. The title, \"Chinese Narrative Poetry\", suggests that the author's emphasis lies in the poetry of each of the four pieces as an individual, artistic whole. On the contrary, the author has chosen to focus on various narrative elements in three separate chapters, analysing the four poems piecemeal within these chapters. The result is fragmentary and truncated, cited passages and critical comment awkwardly disconnected. I would have preferred four separate chapters on one narrative poem at a time, each chapter opening with a full translation of it, and proceeding to discuss its common and unique narrative aspects. Another disputed point arises from the author's title, and from her heading of Chapter One, \"Narrative elements in traditional Chinese poetics\". In this chapter Dr Levy reviews early Chinese statements on literature and poetry with a particular reference to her topic of narrative art. This chapter heading, her book's title, and sub-title suggest to the reader that the discussion that follows in Chapters Two to Four will reveal some historical awareness of her subject. This is not the case. In fact, incomprehensible as it might seem, Dr Levy's analysis of the four pieces is conducted with no apparent knowledge of and scant reference to the enormously important and valuable repertoire of narrative verse among pieces known as yiieh-fu, or Music Bureau pieces. Significantly, the seminal and pioneering work of Jean-Pierre Dieny, 1968, on yiieh-fu, though cited in the Bibliography, thereafter remains lost to the discussion in her book. It is not even clear whether this book has been read by the author. Had it been assimilated, Dr Levy would have been able to find very many more narrative qualities native to the Chinese oral tradition replicated in the later pieces she deals with. As it is, the narrative qualities she does highlight are those of the Western literary tradition, in the main, such as point of view, description (Chapter Two), character types and roles (Chapter Three), temporal and other sequences (Chapter Four). This lack of historical perspective in Dr Levy's book makes spurious her claim that it con","PeriodicalId":81727,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland. Little is known of its growth and development. He died in 619 (1222–3), approaching ninety years of age, in the district of the Mesopotamian town of Dara, in a village called al-Qunayya.
