In addition, the associations of race, gender, and age on these variables were analyzed. A total of 81 older persons, 56% white and 44% black, and approximately the same number of males and females, were recruited from public housing, a senior citizens organization, and a private community dwelling. Results indicated that a number of associations were significant between race, gender, religion, and age. No gender or race differences were associated with self-efficacy or depression. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to examine the role of self-efficacy, family-of-origin, and religiosity on depression of older adults. Significant causal effects were found for the influence of religiosity and family-of-origin on self-efficacy and the influence of self-efficacy on depression.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"57-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N04_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66763251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data indicate that clergy aged sixty or over have contact with fewer children on a typical Sunday, generate fewer adult confirmation candidates and are less actively involved in promoting adult house groups. These findings are discussed in the light of a growing body of research concerned with clergy aging. It is suggested that older clergy may perform better in suburban parishes than in either rural or urban ministry.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"23-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N03_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two hundred eighty-seven adults, 60 years of age and older, completed the Life Satisfaction in the Elderly Scale (LSES). Results of an ANCOVA indicated that participation in Bible study groups relates positively and significantly to life satisfaction in older adults when adjusted for the health variable. Older adults who participated regularly in Bible study groups scored significantly higher on the LSES than older adults who did not participate regularly in Bible study groups although they regularly attended worship services. Results suggest that religious education participation and life satisfaction may be related in such a way as to offer implications for improving quality of life in later years.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"49-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66763290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a sample of 150 men, marked attitudinal trends emerged. In the first trend, consideration of spiritual issues was deemed unimportant and interfered with the business of “living life.” In the second trend, determination to achieve a desired but unrealized goal constituted the major focus of life and did not allow time for consideration of spiritual issues. In the third trend, current contenment also negated the need for thought regarding spiritual issues. One of the goals of this study was to determine, through self-reporting, what personal spirituality actually meant to the men interviewed.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"35-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N03_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66763029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first section, it identifies and selectively surveys nine areas that have figured prominently in recent scholarship on aging and the elderly in the New Testament. In the second section, it identifies areas for future research. Particularly emphasized is the challenge of exploring the relationship between the New Testament material and the Greco-Roman world. In order to do this, it is necessary to identify attitudes, roles, and practices that surround aging and the elderly in that cultural context. Some resources and questions that may serve as starting points for further research are indicated.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"35-50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N02_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fact is no less true for religious leaders. After years as the “chief executive officer” of several congregations, many clergy find adjustment to retirement to be a difficult task-emotionally, financially, and socially. Different from many professionals, clergy see their “calling” to their vocation, the ministry, to be a lifetime commitment. Given these factors, retirement can bring drastic changes in the clergy's life–his/her self-identity, sense of importance and value as an individual and as a member of society, relationships with family and friends, financial status, and living arrangements. Yet few denominations provide opportunities for preretirement education for their religious leaders; therefore many clergy make little or no preparation for retirement. This paper looks at pertinent issues related to retirement for clergy. Objectives and content areas for preretirement education are suggested.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"15-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N02_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Third agers, victims of the “retirement trap,” find spiritual needs often unmet by traditional religious structures. Fourth agers remain “outside the camp,” of churches and synagogues, and life review groups often omit the faith dimension. A group model for sharing life stories for spiritual growth facilitates spirituality and is applicable in both religious institutions and long-term care centers. Early evidence indicates that a deepened sense of identity and meaning occur in these groups.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V09N02_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
