Adaptations of the Life Satisfaction Index A (LSIA) and the Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ) were administered to 56 middle and older adult members of a Protestant church in a southwestern city. Bias was determined from FAQ responses using Palmore's (1988) methods. A weak positive relationship was found between LSIA and bias scores (r = .29555, p < .05). Subjects also answered open-ended questions which reflected a high degree of happiness and life satisfaction. Implications for ministry are proposed.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"8 1","pages":"59-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V08N04_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five spiritual tasks of the aging family are: facing mortality, defining the shape and limits of love and fidelity, struggling with the meaning of evil and suffering, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, and giving and receiving a spiritual legacy. Professionals who work with families are encouraged to help families explore their spiritual concerns, work toward small and immediate changes with families as they address spiritual issues, listen for and affirm the family's spiritual resources, and support the enactment of family rituals and ceremonies.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V08N04_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66761760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One community represents retired secular professionals, and the other is made up of retired religious professionals. Findings indicate a diversity of structural relationships between church-affiliated organizations and their parent religious bodies, and that most parent bodies do not assume financial liability for their affiliates. A major disadvantage are perceptions that these communities serve only “their own.” Implications of affiliation are discussed.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"8 1","pages":"79-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V08N02_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66762135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a random sample of 400 persons, 60 years of age and older, a multiple regression analysis reveals that three variables account for the vast majority of variance in life satisfaction. Those variables are: SUBJECTIVE HEALTH STATUS, SATISFACTION WITH INCOME, and CHURCH ATTENDANCE. For those three variables R = .4780; R2 = .2284. When all seven independent variables were included R = .4851; R2 = .2351. In addition, further analysis was undertaken to examine the interrelationships between the seven independent variables.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"8 1","pages":"83-96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V08N01_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66761481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
