This nursing is based on principles of communion, stewardship, service and transformation to promote the health of the community. Faith Community Nurses (FCNs) provide education, advocacy, counselling and assistance with care management to the faith community and beyond. Their work is complimented and supplemented by health ministry volunteers, using their knowledge and skills to build the social capital of the community.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"12 1","pages":"167 - 180"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078v12n03_13","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66768055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model has been tested further and the model was confirmed through in-depth interviews of residents of nursing homes in the ACT. The first study identified six major spiritual themes from participant interviews. These were: ultimate meaning in life for each person, the way they responded to meaning, self-sufficiency versus despair, moving from provisional to final life meanings, relationship versus isolation in ageing and hope versus despair.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"12 1","pages":"151-166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V12N03_12","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66768008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with age comes physical decline and other social problems which today make this a mixed blessing. Yet there is a promise of the renewal of the inner person, day by day even though the cracked and decaying earthen vessel remains. The challenge is to find those aspects of life which are renewed by the gospel. The restoration of the image of God puts the focus on the restored relationship to God for which humans were created and the consequent renewal of relationship with each other. As we grow older, we need to struggle to maintain this perspective.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"12 1","pages":"43 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078v12n03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66767463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What is called for is an approach to ageing and its multiple processes that moves beyond an empirical research model, which is limited to a positivistic focus on the bio-medical and social conditions of ageing. The spiritual dimension of the individual as well as the physical and social need to be acknowledged and valued in any definition of human existence. A segmental approach to the ageing process can only result on a reductionistic, one-dimensional caricature of the older person. There is an imperative need for the inclusion of the spiritual dimension in the study of ageing and its meaning. By issuing a call for a new wholistic paradigm that moves beyond the bio-medical model, and understanding the personhood is affirmed which includes a person's capacity to find meaning in life, indeed, even in ageing, suffering and dying.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"12 1","pages":"31 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V12N03_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66767353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It outlines a study of nurses conducted in six nursing homes using pre and post workshop tests to identify changes in nurses' assignment of a list of behaviours as psychosocial or spiritual. Use of SPSS found significant changes between the pre and post tests. Pre workshop tests only identified items as spiritual if they included the word God, or Bible. Results from this study highlight the potential role for nurses in aged care to provide spiritual care as part of holistic care. It also highlights the fact that many nurses feel ill prepared for this role.","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"12 1","pages":"111 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078V12N03_09","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66767200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some authors publish their story to alleviate their own pain, while others do so to help people cope with particular problems. Some look for answers to the universal question, ‘‘Is there some meaning in suffering?’’ Suffering is very personal. It can be real or imagined. No two people suffer in the same degree from the same event. Situations that cause suffering may be the result of particular circumstances of a consequence of something we do to ourselves. Often, however, they are unexplainable. Why bad things happen to good people is a question all of us have asked, particularly when misfortune strikes or when we see how many good things happen to bad people. Human existence has always been connected with suffering. The New Testament evidences this concern in diverse ways. Our focus will center on care for aging parents by adult children. In requiring that adult children care for their aging parents, there is little doubt that the early Christian communities were influenced by the fifth commandment. New Testament writers quote the commandment ‘‘Honor your father and mother’’ in its Septuagint wording (Eph 6:2-3; cf. Exod 20:12; Deut 5:16). They cite it along with other commandments from the Decalogue (Mk 10:19) and refer to it as a commandment of Moses (Mk 7:10). In our time, the fifth commandment is frequently understood as exhorting younger children to obey their parents. A number of scholars have recognized, however, that in both ancient Israel and in the early Christian Communities, this commandment addressed adult Children in multi-generational households.1 It required from them a life-long obedience to and care for aging parents. This understanding of the fifth commandment as requiring adult ‘‘children’’ to care for their aged parents is evident in several first-cen-","PeriodicalId":81692,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religious gerontology","volume":"55 1","pages":"45 - 59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J078v12n02_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66766944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
