This is also the first generation of priests to retire from their parishes because of age. To assist them, many diocese are providing group residences. Involvement of the retirees in designing and carrying out a participatory model for management of the residence can minimize the impediments to life satisfaction. Involvement promotes experiences in community building, advocacy on behalf of group needs, and candid exchanges about meaning and purpose that the residents want their retirement to provide.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"53-57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N04_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A modification of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale was used to evaluate the feelings and attitudes of a group of aged women religious. Older persons drawn from a diverse religious background were used as a control group. Results suggest that strongly held religious values aid the elderly nun as she ages, and that her responses are different from her age mates. Finally, there is a discussion of some of the experiences of the aging religious which make her maturation unique.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"59-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N04_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While acknowledging the potential value of both modalities, this paper exaplores the possible benefit of integrating theological perspectives into the disengagement/review process. Five illustrative areas of integration are examined including (1) the value of social withdrawal, (2) conditional versus unconditional bases for self-worth, (3) freedom from guilt, (4) coming to terms with loss and (5) transformation of hope. This paper may be useful for professionals who counsel those elderly who are perplexed about the problem of personal fulfillment.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N04_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, adaptation and coping were examined in a stratified random sample of 100 persons age 55 to 80 participating in the Second Duke Longitudinal Study of Aging. Twelve established social psychological measures of adaptation and coping were utilized for this purpose. Mean scores were compared between persons using religious behaviros and those using other coping behaviors. Social class, amount of life-stress experienced, and type of stressors were also compared between religious and non-religious copers. No significant difference was observed between religious and non-religious copers on any of the 12 measures of coping and adaptation. Stratifying the sample by sex did not alter these results. A small proportion of the sample (7%) were distinguished by the degree to which religon had permeated their coping behaviors and outlook on life. These older adults displayed a significant preference for \"instrumental\" activities over \"expressive\" activities. Level of education and occupation (or previous occupation) were significantly related to educational preference. Persons with fewer years of schooling indicated significant preference for instrumental activities, almost to the exclusion of expressive interests. As levels of education rose, there was a decrease in the ratio of instrumental preferences to expressive preferences. Persons in white collar jobs preferred expressive learning experiences more than blue collar individuals. Programming implications for local churches are discussed.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"43-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
