This paper examines the Buddhist teachings on aging by presenting representative depicfions of aging mainly from the Tibetan Buddhist literature. While on the surface they may present aging in a negative way, the context in which they are to be understood and practiced needs to be considered. Buddhist depictions of aging are meant to be powerful antidotes to the conceit of youth and act as spurs to spiritual growth and realization.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"59-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N03_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their mean score reflected an accuracy rate of 66 percent, while a subscore indicated a high pro-aging bias. A comparison reveals clergy's level of knowledge of aging is no better than that of a criterion group of undergraduates. There is a suggestion clergy's high pro-aging bias may be unrealistic and thus militate against effective intervention on behalf of the elderly.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"5 1","pages":"67-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V05N03_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66348241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
