This work aims at revising the prospects for GRB alerts with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) based on the new LAT results. We start considering the simulation of the observations with the full CTA of two extremely bright events, the long GRB 130427A and the short GRB 090510, then we investigate how these GRBs would be observed by a particular configuration of the array with the telescopes pointing to different directions in what is called the “coupled divergent mode”.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. ","doi":"10.1393/ncc/i2016-16247-4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1393/ncc/i2016-16247-4","url":null,"abstract":"DarkSide-50 is a dark matter direct search experiment at LNGS, searching for rare nuclear recoils possibly induced by WIMPs. It has two nested vetoes and a dual phase liquid argon TPC as dark matter detector. Key features of this experiment are the use of underground argon as radio-pure target and of muon and neutron active vetoes to suppress the background. The first data-taking campaign was running from November 2013 to April 2015 with an atmospheric argon target and a reduced efficiency neutron veto due to internal contamination. However, an upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon cross section of 6.1×10−44 cm2 at 90% CL was obtained for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c2 and an exposure of (1422 ± 67) kg·d. At present DarkSide-50 started a 3 years run, intended to be background-free because the neutron veto was successfully recovered and underground argon replaced the atmospheric one. Additionally calibration campaigns for both the TPC and the neutron veto were completed. Thanks to the good performance of the background rejection, the results obtained so far suggest the scalability of DarkSide-50 to a ton-scale detector, which will play a key role into the dark matter search scenario.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. The lower neutron production compared to spallation has to be compensated by improving the neutron extraction process and optimizing the brilliance. Design and optimiziation of the moderator system are conducted with MCNP and will be validated with measurements at the AKR-2 training reactor by means of a prototype assembly where, e.g. , the effect of different liquid H 2 ortho/para ratios will be investigated and controlled in realtime via online heat capacity measurements.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. Chittleborough","doi":"10.1393/NCC/I2015-15098-9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1393/NCC/I2015-15098-9","url":null,"abstract":"The Representations in Learning Science (RiLS) project developed a representation construction approach to teaching and learning in science, which has successfully demonstrated enhanced student learning through sustained engagement with ideas, and enhancement of teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and understandings of how knowledge in science is developed and communicated. The current Constructing Representations in Science Pedagogy (CRISP) project aims at wider scale implementation of the representation construction approach. This paper explores a range of issues that confronted four Year 8 teachers in implementing this research-developed approach, such as: preparedness of the teacher in terms of epistemological positioning and positioning as a learner, significant support for planning and modelling by the university expert, and a team ethos where teachers share ideas and plan jointly. The Year 8 teachers implemented a representation construction approach to the teaching of the topic of astronomy. The Interconnected Model of Teacher Growth (IMTG) (Clarke & Hollingsworth, 2002) was used to analyse the teachers’ experience in planning and delivering the teaching sequence. This model was found to be flexible in identifying the experiences of teachers in different situations and useful in identifying issues for implementation of a research developed pedagogy.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. One of the main reasons given for using history of science in teaching is its power to promote understanding of the nature of science (NOS). Käppeler","doi":"10.1393/NCC/I2015-15174-2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1393/NCC/I2015-15174-2","url":null,"abstract":"— The abundances of the chemical elements heavier than iron can be attributed in about equal parts to the r and to the s process, which are taking place in supernova explosions and during the He and C burning phases of stellar evolution, respectively. So far, quantitative studies on the extremely short-lived neutron-rich nuclei constituting the (n, γ) network of the r process are out of reach. On the contrary, the situation for the s-process is far advanced, as the reaction path of the s process from C to the Pb/Bi region is located within the valley of stability. Accordingly, a comprehensive database of experimental (n, γ) cross sections has been established. While for many stable isotopes the necessary accuracy is still to be reached, reliable cross sections for the involved unstable isotopes are almost completely missing. Because of the intrinsic γ background of radioactive samples, successful time-of-flight measurements are depending on intense pulsed neutron sources. Such data are fundamental for our understanding of branchings in the s-process reaction path, which carry important model-independent information on neutron flux and temperature in the deep stellar interior.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica.
