Although the technique has been shown to produce deterministic forecasts that can be superior to the individual models in the ensemble or a simple multimodel ensemble forecast, there is a clear need to understand its strengths and limitations. This paper is an attempt to do so in simple, easily understood contexts. The results demonstrate that the SE forecast is almost always better than the simple ensemble forecast, the degree of improvement depending on the properties of the models in the ensemble. However, the skill of the SE forecast with respect to the true forecast depends on a number of factors, principal among which is the skill of the models in the ensemble. As can be expected, if the ensemble consists of models with poor skill, the SE forecast will also be poor, although better than the ensemble forecast. On the other hand, the inclusion of even a single skillful model in the ensemble increases the forecast skill significantly.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. This event was already analyzed by two of the authors at synoptic and planetary scales, however in this work we investigate the mesoscale of the storm by the RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) model. Firstly it is shown that large-scale moisture source was mainly from the Mediterranean basin, then RAMS simulations are discussed to focus on the mesoscale of the storm. More precisely we evaluate the roles of Calabrian orography and the surface latent heat fluxes by the factor separation technique. Results show that the role of Calabrian orography, even if important, decreased during the event whilst the role of surface latent heat fluxes was less affected through the entire event. A prominent mid tropospheric trough or cut-off low can be identified through this event prior and during the period of heavy rain. The upper-tropospheric level disturbance, associated with high potential vorticity (PV) values, consequence of a deep tropospheric intrusion of stratospheric air masses, coupled with the surface cyclone and reinforced the whole meteorological system which resulted in the heavy impact rainstorm over Calabria, mainly during 11th and 12th December 2003.","PeriodicalId":81495,"journal":{"name":"Il Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. The present contribution aims at summarising the activities of the interface for the period 2004-06. A first step consisted in a detailed survey of the current context of synchrotron usage for cultural heritage through strong interactions with actors of the field, an extensive review of the existing publications and the co-organisation of specific workshops and round tables. From this preliminary survey, the interest of a dedicated project involving European research infrastructures is clearly emphasised.
