Aim of the research: To examine the quality of life of patients with arterial hypertension and their assessment adherence to therapeutic recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material(s) and Method(s): A total of 103 hypertensive patients of the Independent Public Healthcare Centre of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Wroclaw were examined. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF) and the Adherence in Chronic Diseases Scale (ACDS) were used. Result(s): The mean score for perception of quality of life was 3.64 +/-0.73. Quality of life was rated best in the psychological domain (M = 15.05, SD = 2.42) and worst in the physical domain (M = 13.25, SD = 2.67). 57.28% (59/103) of the respondents had medium adherence, 23.30% (24/103) had low adherence, and 19.42% (20/103) had high adherence. The level of adherence was significantly better among patients keeping a self-monitoring diary compared to those who did not keep such a diary (24.19 +/-2.86 vs. 21.86 +/-4.56, p = 0.007). Patient age (r = 0.323, p = 0.001) and systolic blood pressure value (r = -0.193, p = 0.05) significantly correlated with adherence level. The higher the level of adherence, the better the quality of life in the psychological (r = 0.197, p = 0.046) and social (r = 0.198, p = 0.045) domains. Conclusion(s): Adherence to the therapeutic plan and good patient-doctor cooperation are extremely important for the level of quality of life of hypertensive patients.Copyright © 2023 Termedia Publishing House Ltd.. Grip strength measurement in young adults is particularly important for teachers because it determines how effectively they are able to perform their duties. Aim of the research: To determine the relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and normalised grip strength (NGS) and body mass index (BMI) in female university students. Material and methods: The study participants comprised 231 young women from Poland and Croatia. Their handgrip strength was measured, and their BMI and NGS were calculated. Differences between groups of students from Poland and Croatia were determined using Student’s t -test. The relationships between HGS and NGS and somatic traits and BMI were assessed using the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Differences between BMI categories were assessed using one-way ANOVA. Results: Mean HGS among the participants from Poland and Croatia equalled 29.9 ±4.75, and mean NGS equalled 0.49 ±0.13. The problems of premature babies are at the forefront of neonatal research and perinatal care. Aim of the research: To establish an association between the formation of adverse consequences in preschool children born prematurely, with a body weight of less than 1500 g, and placental changes. Material and methods: The study involved 220 preschool children born prematurely. The results of a pathomorphological study of the placentas of mothers of 220 children were analysed. The results distinguished 5 groups of mothers according to the classification of changes in the placenta. In the course of the study, this category of children was under observation of the doctors of the Prematurity and Hight-risk Neonate Post-discharge Follow-up Department, in order to regular assess their health. Clinical indicators such as body weight, height, head circumference, neurological and general cognitive development, and low-severity dysfunction, the post-discharge history including respiratory diseases, skeletal system problems, and haematological and metabolic disorders was analysed. Ophthalmological and audiological examinations were performed prospectively to assess vision and hearing. Patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the severity of the disabling pathology. Results: An analysis of the clinical parameters of children with severe disability consequences was carried out; these were divided into 5 groups according to the changes found in their placentas. All the children involved in the study had a disease combination in the neonatal period that caused severe conditions. Pathological changes of the placenta significantly affected the course of the neonatal period. Thus, newborns with signs of inflammatory changes and immaturity were 10 times more likely to suffer generalized intrauterine infections and neonatal sepsis; they also significantly more frequently had intraven- tricular haemorrhages, periventricular leukomalacia, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The course of the neonatal period in groups of children with signs of premature aging of placenta and blood flow disorders was characterized by a low frequency of infections, but periventricular leukomalacia was diagnosed 5 times more often. Conclusions: It was found that transplacental infection and pathological placenta immaturity had a negative impact on the health of children of groups III and IV, causing their birth 3 weeks prematurely, unlike the children in the comparison group. Newborns of groups III and IV needed resuscitation care in the delivery room 9 times more often, and the need for respiratory support was 10 times higher than in the comparison group, which predetermined a significantl","PeriodicalId":81014,"journal":{"name":"Contributions in medical studies","volume":"127 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77404404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It remains unknown whether left atrial appendage thrombus (LAAT) in AFL patients on chronic oral anticoagulation (OAC) contributes significantly to that risk. Aim of the research: To assess the prevalence and predictors of LAAT, and its role in the prediction of mortality, stroke, and systemic thromboembolic events among consecutive AFL patients on OAC admitted for electrical cardioversion. Material and methods: This was a prospective, single-centre cohort study. The participants underwent transoesophageal echocardiography before electrical cardioversion. A total of 69 patients were enrolled. The primary outcome was the presence of LAAT. All participants were followed up for 12 months to evaluate the incidence of systemic thromboembolic events, stroke, and death. Results: Despite uninterrupted OAC, irrespective of the anticoagulant agent type, LAAT was present in 10.1% of patients referred for cardioversion due to typical AFL of > 48-hour duration. The significant predictor of LAAT was prior stroke/ transient ischaemic attack/thromboembolic event (OR = 14.75; 95% CI: 2.17–108.33). No deaths, strokes, or systemic throm- boembolic events occurred during the follow-up period. Conclusions: The predictive role of LAAT in relation to mortality, stroke, and systemic thromboembolic events among pa- tients with AFL and chronic oral anticoagulation remains unclear.","PeriodicalId":81014,"journal":{"name":"Contributions in medical studies","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81817925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasing requirements in the field of diagnostics and dental treatment are conducive to the digitization of many areas of dentistry. The mentioned diagnosis and treatment are based on the knowledge of a specialist. The introduction of artificial neural networks (ANN) makes it possible to support the doctor’s decision regarding the diagnosis and treatment plan. The article presents the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence in the field of paediatric dentistry, both in terms of diagnostics and in the treatment process. There are many publications and ongoing research on the use of machine learning methods for dental treatment. Various types of analysis are based on digital images such as intraoral photographs, panoramic images, computed tomography images, and cephalometric radiography.","PeriodicalId":81014,"journal":{"name":"Contributions in medical studies","volume":"45 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81242224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
