The aim of the analysis is to check the possibilities of better use of post-production wood residues, which as a result of these activities gain the same value as full-value production materials. This includes producing high-quality products from them having in mind innovation, design and ecology. The circular economy and sustainable development strategies are new concepts and objectives of the EU material strategy. There is no turning back from these actions. They will be forced by the requirements and recommendations of the EU. Therefore, it is better to get used to them and to the activities behind them. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of protecting films made of bacterial cellulose with essential oils against overgrowth by mold fungi. The cellulose film produced by microorganisms forming a pellicle called SCOBY was modified by introducing into the cellulose pulp essential oils: cinnamon and manuka. Samples of the protected film were treated with mold fungi: Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma viride. On the basis of the tests conducted, the rate of film overgrowth by mold fungi and the effectiveness criteria of cellulose film protection with essential oils were determined. The addition of cinnamon oil protected the film against the growth of Aspergillus niger and Chaetomium globosum fungi. Manuka oil slowed down the growth of Chaetomium globosum microorganisms on the surface of the bacterial cellulose film sample, but did not protect the samples from overgrowth. The essential oils tested were ineffective against the fungus Trichoderma viride.\u0000\u0000

The paper deals with the influence of the type of transparent surface finish on the change of colour of the surfaces of native beech wood and thermally modified wood. At the same time, the colour stability of three surface finishes on the surfaces of native and thermally modified beech wood was monitored. Beech wood was thermally modified at temperature of 125 °C for 6 hours. The thermal treatment was performed in a pressure autoclave APDZ 240, by the company Sundermann s.r.o in Banská Štiavnica. Three various types of surface finishes (synthetic, wax-oil, water-based) were applied onto the wood surfaces. The colour of the surfaces of native wood and thermally modified wood was measured in the system CIELab before and after surface finishing; the coordinates L*, a*, b*, C*ab and h*ab were measured. From the coordinates measured before and after surface finishing, the differences were calculated and then the colour difference ∆E* was calculated. Subsequently, the test specimens with the surface finishes were exposed to natural sunlight, behind glass in the interior for 60 days. The surface colour was measured at specified time of the exposure (10, 20, 30, 60 days). The results showed that the colour of the wood surfaces changed after application of the individual surface finishes; and the colour difference reached a change visible with a medium quality filter up to a high colour difference. The wax-oil surface finish caused a high colour difference on native wood and on thermally modified wood as well. On native beech wood, the lowest colour difference after exposure to sunlight was noticeable on the synthetic surface finish. On the surface of wood thermally modified, after exposure to sunlight, the lowest colour difference was noticeable on the surface with no surface finish.\u0000\u0000

Dusts are a mixture of compounds generated both in the anthropogenic and natural environment and they are a by-product of combustion and abrasion or crushing of solid materials. Dust generated in wood industry plants as a result of mechanical wood processing is particularly dangerous. Wood dusts - both dispersed in the air inside a production plant and deposited - also contain the work environment's so-called biological agents. This term refers to microorganisms and the structures and substances produced by these organisms, which have an adverse effect on the human organism and may cause numerous diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the level of contamination with microscopic fungi of dusts from various types of wood depending on the granulation. The method of analysis of the chemical ergosterol marker was used here, the concentration of which is correlated with the number of mycoscopic fungi. On the basis of the study, it was found that dusts with finer granulation from deciduous wood are characterized by a higher concentration of ERG, i.e. a higher level of contamination with microscopic fungi. It is important information from the point of view of health and safety at work.\u0000\u0000

The aim of presented study was to determine the mechanical properties of three-layered glued structural beams manufactured with the use of side-timber pieces as an outer layers and the fragmented main yield as an inner layer. Four types of beams were pressed and tested in terms of four-point bending strength and modulus of elasticity. Variants differed from each other in the direction of the fibers in the inner layer and in the presence of adhesive layer between the fragmented wood. Studies have shown that the bending strength of the beams depended on the calculation method. Moreover, no significant effect of the inner layer arranging method on the bending strength of the beams was found. The values of modulus of elasticity (MOE) were low. The paper presents the results of research concerning the assessment of machinability of pine wood thermomechanically compacted. The assessment was made on the basis of the cutting forces and surface roughness after the milling process. Selected properties of native and modified wood were examined. Based on the research, it was found that compacted wood is characterized by higher cutting forces during milling. The surface quality after milling was examined and the roughness index Ra values were determined. The research shows that the modified wood is characterized by a lower Ra value both along and across the grain. The rapid development of the furniture market results in the need to produce tools with increasingly better properties which make it possible to increase the efficiency of the production. One of the prospective paths of development for blades intended for cutting wood-based materials are carbides made using the Spark Plasma Sintering method. It makes it possible to produce sinters with submicron or even nanometric WC grain size in a very short time and without the need for using inhibitors. As a result of the specific heating conditions, this method makes it possible to obtain a material having high parameters in comparison with the material produced using conventional methods. \u0000This study aimed to determine the degree of wear of SPS tools compared to commercially available blades (of similar chemical composition). The results of research testing the basic properties (hardness, density, microstructure) of WCCo composites, obtained using the innovative SPS method, are included in the study.
