This article outlines the transition from a traditional model of social work service delivery to a specialized case referral system. It describes the review process, creation of the alternative service model, implementation strategies, evaluation measures and outcomes of the undertaking. The incremental costs of shared services were compared to the costs of the hospitals performing tests independently and to those of referring tests to another hospital laboratory. An evaluation was conducted to assess whether the project had been implemented according to the original proposal.
