{"title":"Implant retained overdentures in mandibular reconstruction: a case report.","authors":"M L Huband","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>This case report describes the clinical and laboratory procedures used in the rehabilitation of a patient treated for oral cancer with surgery and radiation therapy. During surgery, a large portion of the mandible was removed and reconstructed with a bone graft. Following therapy, the patient was left with poor esthetics and difficulties with mastication and speech. The goal of prosthodontic treatment was to improve esthetics and restore function. This was successfully achieved through the placement of dental implants and the construction of an implant retained overdenture. A bar was employed to split the implants together and an O-ring system was chosen for retention. {"title":"Comparing vertical dimension changes with and without a face-bow transfer.","authors":"A L Castle, T H Anthony","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The purpose of this investigation was to identify any difference of vertical dimension change that could be attributed to not using a face-bow transfer. Both demonstrations resulted in occlusal changes in vertical dimension. In comparing the demonstrations, where a hinge axis transfer was not taken, a greater amount of change was recorded over that observer in the demonstration where the hinge axis transfer was made. More dedicated research is clearly warranted to establish how much of the change was due to normal technical error. The time spent taking a face-bow transfer (hinge axis) may represent a small portion of the time required to accomplish adjustments on a denture where no transfer was performed. {"title":"Single implant tooth replacement.","authors":"T F Briley","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>It has been shown that direct bone anchorage of dental implants will provide long-term predictability for single tooth implants and multi-unit implants. The function of implant-supported restoration is now routinely achieved. The real challenge facing the restorative dentist and laboratory technician is to achieve optimal aesthetics. The learning objective of this article is to review the prosthodontic procedures essential to maximizing natural aesthetics in implant supported restorations. It will provide a review of master impression techniques, prepable titanium abutments and designing the cement on restoration. Particular emphasis is directed to the soft tissue model from which a series of sequenced techniques can be followed to achieve optimal aesthetics. Analysis of the implant alignment with regard to the neighboring teeth will result in having to make a choice of which prepable abutment will maximize the aesthetic result. {"title":"Intranasal conformers: a case report.","authors":"M L Huband","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>This case report describes the clinical and laboratory procedures in treating a patient that was referred to the dental clinic with the chief complaint of difficulty of breathing through his nose. Examination of the patient revealed constricted nostrils as a result of previous surgeries. It was decided that the patient would benefit from construction of intranasal conformers. The conformers were constructed from acrylic resin because of the material's durability, ease of cleaning, esthetics and ability to be hollowed-out to allow for nasal breathing. Alginate molds were used in this case, as this type of mold offers the advantage of being reusable.
