Although it is rare in the temporomandibular joint, an increasing number of cases are being recorded. This article reports on a patient with this disease and looks at the radiological, surgical, and histologic findings. A review of the literature on this subject is also presented.Trauma to the TM joint will cause displaced discal joint tissue to degenerate and remodel itself. We suggest that trauma in the retrodiscal zone may be a cause of metaplastic changes in the area, which can lead to synovial chondromatosis. For this reason, it is important that the clinician be aware of this disease and its pathogenesis to aid in detecting and possibly even preventing it.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"2 1","pages":"64-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677854","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17647481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the vertical jump and grip tests, a significant increase in muscle efficiency was recorded. An average increase of 5% in vertical jump was noted for the eleven subjects. All of the subjects showed an increase in the grip test, with a mean of 17.3%. However, there was no significant increase in strength recorded for the maximum hip sled or the bench press test.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 4","pages":"37-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677842","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will present a proposed chronology of events and attempt to explain why patients with masticatory disorders may also demonstrate other symptoms in anatomical locations that are not directly connected with the masticatory mechanism. Abnormal posture affects muscle length/tension relationships and joint biomechanics, and this may cause pain. Many of the observations made in this article are derived from clinical settings, while other observations are ones that have been documented throughout medical and dental literature.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 4","pages":"49-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677844","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More students had clicking in both joints than in one (56% versus 45%).Gradation of clicking during jaw opening revealed that 30% occurred at early to middle phases and 45% at complete mouth opening. Slight repetitive clicking occurred in 17% of the students and multiple clicking in 9%.Tenderness to palpation was found in the masticatory muscles of 12% of the students. Palpable pain of the external auditory meatus occurred in approximately 1% and joint tenderness upon lateral palpation in nearly 3%.Chi-square testing showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between clicking and palpable pain of the masticatory muscles in those students with these signs and symptoms.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 4","pages":"43-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677843","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the study described here, radiopaque wires and markers were first placed on two condyles. These condyles were then radiographed and the resulting films were studied. Wires were next placed on the articulating surface of the condyle and on various other points of importance, and the procedure was repeated. The radiographs thus produced provided the examiner with clear and accurate views of the contours and structures of the joint.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 4","pages":"33-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677841","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This Bella Via Repositioner I (patent pending) and its uses are described in detail. The author first surveys dental literature describing various appliances designed to move the mandible forward, and he examines the strengths and weaknesses of each type. He then discusses various approaches and difficulties in treating displaced discs and reviews the procedures involved in the use of the Repositioner I. The Bella Via Repositioners II, III, and IV (patent pending), which were developed as a result of experience with the original appliance, are described, and their various uses are discussed. These devices have sagittal abilities and are able to reposition the mandible anteriorly or posteriorly. The repositioners may prove helpful in various areas of functional jaw orthopedic treatment.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 3","pages":"53-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677833","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All are confident that they minister to their patients with the patients' educated permission. Without the armor of this assumption, no dental surgeon would peel back a gum. The law of informed consent is far from settled in this country. So muddled are the competing legal doctrines that not less than fifty high courts published opinions on the law of informed consent during 1980 and 1981. Of the fifty informed consent decisions published during the last two years, thirty-two are reviewed here.","PeriodicalId":79273,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of cranio-mandibular practice","volume":"1 3","pages":"69-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07345410.1983.11677836","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17643335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
