Results demonstrate developmental trends in the increased efficiency of peg placement for the right hand, left hand, and bimanual conditions. Scores increase monotonically with age; performances are stable, with high test-retest reliability. Continuity is evidenced between these data and those available for older children. Evidence for the dissociation of hand preference and peg placement efficiency in the younger groups is discussed.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"4 1","pages":"19-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638208401113","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35222109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When compared with mental-aged and-chronological-aged matched control children, the autistic group was found to be significantly poorer on the “left-hemisphere” tests, but to be performing at chronological age level on the “right-hemisphere” tests. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of performance suggested that autistic children are handicapped on tasks that require left-hemisphere mediated approaches and that there is evidence for impairment in performances which are traditionally considered to reflect frontal lobe involvement.","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"4 1","pages":"27-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638208401114","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35222110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model, which emphasizes differences between right-hemisphere and left-hemisphere systems, is shown to embrace a wide variety of behavioural phenomena that have been observed in normal children and in various subtypes of learning-disabled children. Dynamic factors operative within the development of both normal and disabled learning are addressed and incorporated.","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638208401112","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35222108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A record of the sequence of line segments used to copy the design was obtained. Normals drew elements of the figure as one unit, while LBD patients broke these elements into more than one unit. The unusual sequencing and fragmented, piecemeal approach of the LBD group was sometimes associated with a delay in attention to the right side, but did not necessarily lead to an impaired finished copy. As expected, the RBD distortions were more severe. It is concluded that an intact right hemisphere does not ensure a holistic approach to copying complex geometric figures.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"4 1","pages":"51-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638208401116","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35222112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients were selected on the basis of their evidenced deficits in performing complex visuo-cognitive tasks and the absence of overt evidence of unilateral visual-spatial neglect. Seventeen of the 35 patients were randomly chosen to receive a training program (lasting approximately 1 month) designed to establish a systematic strategy of organizing complex visual material. The remaining 18 patients were re-examined after 1 month, and served as controls. The design of the treatment program was based on the hypothesis that nonneglected RBD patients fail to appreciate and synthesize elements of complex visual material due to a breakdown in compensation for a persistent lateral bias in visual-spatial attention. Upon posttesting, it was found that those patients who received training exhibited significantly improved performance, as compared to controls, on a subgroup of visuo-cognitive tasks. These results are discussed in terms of: (1) offering indirect support for the argument that pathological asymmetries in attention play a significant role in the failure of RBD patients on many visuo-cognitive tasks; and, (2) offering a basis for extending the treatment of perceptual problems in RBD patients.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"4 1","pages":"59-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638208401117","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35222113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An attempt is made to separate the influence of practice effect from other functional changes in the test-retest differences observed on the WAIS for a sample of adult epilepsy patients. Fifty-eight epilepsy patients were divided into three groups based on their WAIS test-retest score changes. Their corresponding test-retest performance on the Halstead-Reitan Battery and changes in seizure frequency were compared and analyzed. Results indicated that there was a correspondence between improvement in neuropsychological test performance, reduced seizure frequency, and improvement on the WAIS. It was concluded that test-retest changes in neuropsychological test performance reflected changes in psychological functioning of these individuals rather than the influence of practice effect. Some general issues relating to the question of disentangling the influence of practice effect from other functional changes in status were raised and discussed.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"3 3","pages":"237-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638108403128","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18338800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonalcoholic medical inpatients (n=20) with similar education, age, and socioeconomic characteristics were also given these tests twice, with 2 to 3 weeks separating the test administrations. Both groups showed levels of mild to moderate impairment on the first testing and were judged to have stable brain functioning between the first and second testing. Significant Pearson's coefficients of correlation between test-retest scores indicated similar psychometric reliabilities in both groups. In contrast, the reliability of the tests was judged to be questionable when Halstead's binary classification of \"normal\" versus \"abnormal\" was used to classify individual patients. Consequently, and consistent with clinical experience, we urge caution in interpreting these clinical neuropsychological tests when they are administered repeatedly within a 2- to 3-week period to a single individual with stabilized brain functioning.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"3 3","pages":"257-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638108403129","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18338801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to potentiate the usefulness of this rating scale by determining its internal reliability when applied to patients with diffuse cerebral impairment. Subjects, ranging in age from 65 to 94 years, were chosen on the basis of their presenting an organic brain syndrome wtihout obvious localizing features nor evidence of reversible etiology. Responses to the MDRS were scored on split-half forms. Analysis of the scores using the Rulon formula for split-half reliability yielded a correlation coefficient of .90, indicating that the MDRS is very consistent internally. The effects of preoperative psychological, psychiatric, and cardiologic factors on postoperative cognitive changes were analyzed. The investigation period was from five months before up to five months after the operation. There was a general trend towards improvement in intellectual performances. The psychotic group, however, still showed a persisting impairment in some visual and psychomotor tests several months after the surgery. The group with neurologic symptoms showed impairment in one visual test. Of the preoperative variables, mitral valve disease, a high level of hypochondriasis and anxiety, and poor performance in some visual and psychomotor tests predicted postoperative intellectual impairment. The results suggest two types of cerebral complications of open heart surgery. Postoperative psychosis reflects diffuse brain dysfunction manifesting itself in psychological tests long after the clinical symptoms have resolved. The presence of neurologic symptoms refers to a focal or lateralized injury. Both the neurologic and neuropsychologic findings indicate that the right hemisphere may be prone to dysfunction than the left hemisphere.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"3 3","pages":"181-97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638108403125","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18338797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from 1952 subjects, ranging in age from 8 to 70 years, were analyzed in toto as well as by age and sex. The factor analysis revealed the presence of only a single dimension. The internal consistency was uniformly high for all age and sex cohorts (a greater than or equal to .91). The item analyses showed that, in the aggregate, preference for hammering, drawing, and writing were the activities most strongly correlated with hand dominance determined on the basis of an unweighted composite of all the tasks. However, at ages 9 and 10, the hand used for hammering was not as strong an indicator of overall hand preference as writing and drawing. In contrast, with adult subjects (19 years and older), writing and drawing were slightly less satisfactory measures of overall manual preference, while use of hammer retained its high predictive value.
","PeriodicalId":79225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of clinical neuropsychology","volume":"3 3","pages":"199-213"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01688638108403126","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18338798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
