{"title":"[Cephalometric investigation and comparison of the effect of Edgewise and Begg technique therapies on the facial skeleton in hyperdivergent cases].","authors":"H Gögen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes occurring during Edgewise and Begg technique therapies in skeletal open-bite cases and to compare the two techniques. The material consists of 60 lateral cephalometric films of 30 patients with hyperdivergent skeletal structure, 10 had been treated by Standard Edgewise Technique, the other 10 by Begg technique and the remaining 10 had been used as the Control group which had no treatment. 18 variables were included in the study. To determine the homogeneity of the three groups pretreatment (control) values were examined. Next, the pre and posttreatment (control) values of all the three groups were investigated and they were compared with each other. The overall results show that Edgewise technique restricted the growth of point A more than the Begg technique. In our clinic, we use this orthopedic face mask in order to stimulate maxillary development, especially in cleft palate cases. The main purpose of this article is to introduce a practical and economical fabrication technique which we have developed by taking impressions from the individual. This technique consists of an extra oral appliance which is custom-made for each patient and an easily applied anchorage system. Appliances developed by ourselves were applied to twenty adult rats which were separated into two groups consisting each ten animals. Daily water to the controls where water containing analgesic to the study group were given. After three days osteoclasts were counted in the inter-radicular septum of the first molar where the appliance were applied in the sacrificed animals. Sectional arches are mostly used in distalisation of canins. Besides, according to the tooth extracted, e.g. premolars 1, 2 it is also possible to retract the teeth by using sectional arches. In Begg technique, by means of elastics attached to helix on the mesial side of the canins, it is not possible to give the canins a unique movement, instead all of the anterior tooth from canin to canin are extracted. For prediction of the mandibular growth rotation, mandibular plane inclination in relation to the cranial base has been used frequently for many years. On the other hand, besides individual variability, statistical studies have also implied that the mandibular inclination in relation to the cranial base can be considered as a morphogenetic feature, which reflects the actual growth rotation pattern of the mandible only to a moderate degree. {"title":"[Effects of activator and activator + anterior high-pull headgear on the growth direction of Class 2 cases].","authors":"O Uner,&nbsp;S Akkaya,&nbsp;F Buyruk","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In this study which the effects of activator and activator + anterior high-pull headgear on the growth direction of skeletal class 2 cases for a period of approximately 9 months; 33 cases having a mean age of 10.59 years; ANB angles 4.5 degrees and over were studied. Activator treatment has been applied to the 11 of the 22 treatment cases, the others have had the activator + anterior high-pull headgear treatment. The control group, 11 patients, has only been observed in terms of the growth and development without having any treatment. By the use of splint, the differences in ANB, SNA angle; SE, Mo-MS, Ms-S dimensions; overjet, overbite and anterior facial height were found statistically significant. This research is conducted on the patient whose first permanent molars need to be extracted due to profound caries and unrestorab material loss.
