In two cases which left central incisors couldn't erupt because of an odontoma. {"title":"[Class III malocclusions and orthognathic surgery].","authors":"A U Aksoy,&nbsp;E Ozgentaş","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The object of treatment in skeletal class III malocclusions is to improve the skeletal imbalance by orthopedic forces and to improve tooth alignment and establish intercuspal relations by orthodontic means, however, in severe skeletal class III after growth has terminated, the effect of treatment by orthodontics only is limited because of abnormal relationships between the jaws. Severe malocclusions in adults usually cannot be treated successfully without orthognathic surgery in concert with orthodontics. Both techniques are necessary because orthognathic surgery frequently cannot produce precise alignment of teeth. {"title":"[The use of spring-loaded posterior bite-block in the treatment of open-bite].","authors":"H N Işcan,&nbsp;S Akkaya","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The treatment objectives of open-bite cases which occurs as a result of the excess vertical growth of nasomaxillary complex, increase in the upper and lower posterior vertical dentoalveolar development, downward and backward growth of the mandible are restraining of the growth capacity of these regions and leading the growth of the mandible on the horizontal plane. One of the treatment alternatives of these cases is the spring-loaded posterior bite block; a functional orthopedic appliance. In this case report which the effects of spring-loaded posterior bite block therapy on craniofacial and dentoalveolar structures have been shown; three cases having chronological ages of 9 years 8 months; 10 years 4 months and 10 years 1 month were presented and the treatment results were discussed. The anterior body ostectomy is indicated primarily in selected cases of mandibular prognathism, class III malocclusion when the posterior teeth are not in crossbite or the crossbite is dental in nature and can readily be resolved with conventional orthodontics. As with the correction of other dentofacial deformities, carefully done model surgery and a cephalometric prediction tracing are imperative in planning the anterior body ostectomy. Enlow's counterpart analysis was used for this evaluation. The material was consisted 166 cephalometric films of 83 male and female subjects. A total of fourteen variables were employed and the data was analysed by various statistical methods. The vertical growth of middle cranial fossa and mandibular ramus as the equivalent of nasomaxillary complex was found to be the key sites in the determination of mandibular growth rotation pattern. {"title":"[The changes in orthodontic area after retention period in skeletal Class 2 cases treated with activator].","authors":"O Uner,&nbsp;A S Gültan","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The aim of this study is to investigate the stability of the results obtained through functional orthodontic treatments after the retention period in skeletal class 2 cases. 14 subjects having skeletal class 2 structures with a skeletal age of approximately 11 years were examined. 7 out of 14 were separated as treatment group, where the other 7 were separated as the control group. Contantion treatment was performed to the treatment group, for a period of 2 years in average, which have been treated with activators for approximately 1 year. The cephalometric radiographs of all subjects were taken at the beginning and the end of treatment and retention. On these models, forces applied to face bows which were attached to permanent and removable ancher units. After the experiment sagittal sections prepared and analyzed under polaroscope. The results of the 8 case with removable ancher units and 7 case with permanent ancher units were compared by cephalometric processes. This architectural and structural cranio-facial analysis of the lateral cephalometric radiograph clarifies the mutual balance of the various bony structures of the cranium and face, individualizes certain of the structures, and specifies their normal of pathologic relationships. Five cephalometric, films were evaluated according to Delaire's architectural and structural analysis and according to classic cephalometric analysis.
