The sample consisted of 20 cephalometric films of 10 individuals who passed their active growth period. 20 parameters were measured on every lateral cephalometric film. Differences according to treatment were compared by paired t-test. For this purpose, different reference planes are used. Does the utilization of different reference planes make no difference in the results obtained or do they affect them? The aim of this study is to find an answer to this question. By establishing two different reference planes on the same tracings; the distances of certain anatomic points to these planes are measured on the pre-post treatment and control films. Then, the pre-post means of these measurements are evaluated by t-test. {"title":"[Study of the structural compensation of the mandible during treatment with cervical headgear].","authors":"H N Işcan,&nbsp;M Dinçer,&nbsp;A S Gültan","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>This study was performed on two cephalometric films of each fourteen subjects with skeletal class 1 facial structure and Angle Class II molar relation treated with cervical headgear for a period 0.777 +/- 0.06 years; and of each thirteen control subjects with skeletal class 1 facial structures and normal occlusion observed for a period of 0.807 +/- 0.03 years. The correlation coefficients for the longitudinal changes of angular and linear measurements during control and treatment periods in both groups were evaluated. The correlation coefficients belonging to each group were compared; and the compensational regions during cervical traction were investigated. Sixteen (16) extraction cases treated with fixed appliances, twelve (12) treated with activator and twenty (20) cases for control group were examined. The age differed between 10 to 13 No sex difference was made. Tracings were made on 96 before and after treatment cephalometric radiographs and linear dimensions were measured by using Coben Coordinate Analysis. The findings were evaluated by statistical methods. For this purpose, The FR-3 appliance was tried out on total 13 patients (5 female and 8 male) Who have skeletal Angle Class III malocclusion due to maxillary inadequacy. The changes in the sagittal direction on lateral cephalograms and the findings obtained as a result of treatment, were compared with the usual grow up and maturation values. Then, whole data were evaluated biostatistically. Twenty-three parameters in the first group and nine parameters in the second, which were used in two and three investigations respectively, were statistically compared. Paired t test was used in the first group and variance analysis in the second group. This article discusses the methods of sterilization and disinfection. Avoidance of corrosion of instruments and the use of a ultrasonic cleaner to avoid contamination has been explained. {"title":"[Evaluation of the changes occurring in the vertical direction of the face in cases treated with activator + occipital headgear combination].","authors":"Z Altuğ,&nbsp;H Işeri,&nbsp;Z Bayazit,&nbsp;H Gögen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The aim of this study was to evaluate the vertical skeletal and dentoalveolar changes in the Class II Division 1 cases treated with the activator + occipital headgear combination. The present study was performed on 40 subjects and comprised 20 subjects who had undergone activator + occipital headgear therapy and 20 control subjects who had received no orthodontic treatment. 15 linear and angular measurements were performed on 80 lateral cephalometric films of 40 subjects. By comparing the treatment and control groups, the changes related to growth was eliminated and following results were obtained: SNA and ANB angles were reduced in treatment group (p less than 0.01) and the difference between treatment and control groups were statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Jarabak ratio did not show any change in the treatment group but decreased in the control group (p less than 0.05) and the difference between treatment and control groups was statistically significant (p less than 0.05).
